Greetings All!

I just got my callsign today (WSFH602) and my first radios (Baofeng UV-9G) just arrived! 😊

I am in south-central Wisconsin.

What are the tips, tricks, or advice you wish you had know when you were first starting into GMRS?
What are you top links for GMRS for all levels of users such as: casual, hobbyist, or power user (if that is a thing)?

Welcome @WSFH602, great questions. I’d say I wish I knew that it was going to be a rabbit hole of buying radios but I think part of me suspected. 😀
As for links here’s a few

line of sight tool to see what your line of sight is to local repeaters.

Chirp for programming.

Radio Reference for scanner frequencies.

MyGMRS for repeater listenings.

Intro to GMRS video by our own @marcspaz.

Howdy !

New to GMRS is an understatement.  I don't know what I don't know.  I joined and ran up a profile here, because I can.   Will probably join up the 'premium' level, again, because I can.    I'm currently learning / attempting to learn programming my unit first (Baofeng handheld), then will soon see which end is up 'on the air' if anyone's around my area, of course contacting repeater owners in advance of any transmission.   Thanks to my bud Josh in Texas for the 'GMRS For Dummies 101' walk through and continuing help.

Cheers !

Kenny, WSEV474, South Flori-Duh.

Welcome, Kenny!  You are in the right place.  I'm relatively new to GMRS myself and have found this forum to be a gold mine of information.  There are some very skilled members here and (the best part) they are helpful and patient.

Don't be afraid to ask what you think is a stupid question.  I do it all the time. :)

Welcome to the fray! I became a premium member to help support the work of maintaining this resource.

Watch out for that Steve Shannon, though. He will teach you things.

Greetings y'all. Another noob here.  I recently bought two UV5Rs and got my GMRS license in hopes to have some sort of communication in the case of the shtf. Unbeknownst to me was that the nearby repeater is not GMRS. The nearest one is at least 13 miles away plus lots of trees. So I have a nice pair of moderately priced walkie talkies to use when my son and I go riding on our adventure bikes lol.  Anyway, I'm looking forward to learning a lot from y'all. I was a truck driver for 30 years and still have my old Cobra 29, but this is a whole new world to me. I programmed the radios with CHIRP, jotted down usable repeaters around the area and plan to keep one of the radios in my pickup in case whatever.

Cheers

@WSFP451 welcome. In the case of shtf, repeaters likely won't be available. At least not for long. After hurricane Berl, my favorite ham repeater was down but fortunately my second favorite one was still up as well as my favorite GMRS repeater.

Any way, in the case of shtf, try to keep your loved ones close enough for simplex if you can. The shorter distance will also help you get to them quickly if need be.

Greetings!  I'm Paulie from Chicagoland.  I recently bought a couple GRMS handhelds and the license, so I can have some fun with the younger kid and spouse while we go walking around the neighborhood and across the parks.  Also got some different size antennas to play with, so we can see how far we can go with barriers to LOS.  We still end up texting via cell when out of range and to change channels.

It's something to do with the old man that isn't gaming, can't be all bad right?  lmao
