A planned road trip to Big Bend this fall led me down the GMRS path of enlightenment.  I am now the proud owner of a Baofeng AR-5RM (and an AR-771C GMRS antenna)  along with a Radioddity DG20-G (along with a Midland MXTA26 with a magnet mount).  Already found a few active GMRS channels on the Baofeng when outdoors......need to take the DG20-G with the Midland MXTA26 outside to test it.

Thanks to many on this site for the informative posts.

Safe travels to all.

Welcome! Sounds like a nice collection of gear to start with, for sure. Its always fun to scan the channels and see what i hear when im traveling. Its always good to have some kind of radio on a common/popular radio service when you are someplace where cell service is spotty or non-existent, too.

I've been considering traveling to Big Bend; however, I have a large 4X4, Chevy 2500 HD.  Would this truck be a little heavy for the trails in and around Big Bend, or should I stick to the RV area?

I’ll report when I get back.  There are lots of YouTube videos showing people driving on many of the trails/roads down there.
Some of the trails/roads appear to be gentler than others. I would not attempt the “River Road” without a high clearance off road four wheel drive vehicle.

Some of the other non maintained roads such as the Maverick road are relatively well traveled and should be fine for a 2500 4x4…..just don’t be tempted to get off the Maverick road to explore a smaller trail that would necessitate a high clearance off road vehicle.
