Radio specifics settings for GMRS

Question

Posted

Good day GURU's
I recently got an out of the box, new TK-5810 .w/ Handheld controller!

I/ we  are planning on using this for dense remote forests to mountain terrain in S.A.R / recreational 4x4 club use.
We are looking for programming settings for GMRS using the KPG-95D Software.

I have been poking around in the software prior to hooking the radio up to the computer.
dios.no need for any of the digital features like trunking, encryption, DTMF, synchronizing, messaging, data, or other Kenwood radios
Will only be used conventionally analog..  later on repeater access.
Where would I find the setting to use?
what would they be?
I would like to have different settings for the same GMRS channel in its own radio memory channel.

Example:
GMRS Ch. 15 wide band, low power
                  15 wide band, High Power
                  15 Narrow Band, Low Power
                 15 Narrow band, High power

Would like to do this for EACH channel in it's own radio memory slot. /  talk group

so EACH GMRS channel will have 4 versions and 4 memory slots in radio.
Maybe have 1 GMRS CH. (4 versions)  in each Radio talk group? I don't know.. Lots of possibilities!

What settings would I need to achieve this?
would like to be able to scan all the channels or is this even possible?
Thanks for Any assistance!

GMRS is a band which typically uses Wideband, Except for the Frs channels {8-14} Which are Narrowband if I remember correctly.

This isn't the typical Kenwood software I see for most of the other radios. It's a bit more complex than their usual radio programming software.

Effectively you create a "system." You can create more than one system if you want too. Then your memory channels are "Personal", or personalities, you build for everything. You can then create "zones" and assign personalities to each zone. In fact you can assign the same personality to multiple zones.

I don't have a TK-5810, or a TK-5120, radio. I do have the software KPG-95DGN V8.30 and a code plug I experimented with building, a long while back, for a TK-5120 radio, just to see what the software does. It took me a bit to get a good feel for how the radio's code plug should be structured. I've attached the code plug I fiddled with if you want to look at it. It gives you some idea how to structure the setup. If you get a good feel for it the code plug design could be very flexible, eliminating duplication that would be required in their other radio programing software.

I have not messed with that software yet, but when you do set up your personalities for the FRS channels, just double check the spacing on it. The CPS might automatically convert it to 12.5kHz for the channel spacing.  Some of the Motorola CPS does it by default.  I would love to pick up a portable radio in the future in that series so I can have and "all in one" radio, DMR, NXDN and P25.

It's going to cost you, particularly for P25! And even then the radio will only allow you to use two out of the three digital protocols in the same code plug together. You want to use a different combination you have to load another code plug using the alternate pair.

These are nice, multi mode and multi band, but they cost about as much as a good used car, in the high 4 figure range with all the goodies. You'll need more than a good tax refund check and that $2000 stimulus payout I keep hearing we might get.

Just get a SDS100 or SDS150 and you're set.

There are several GMRS repeaters that operate with narrowband emissions, it's not just FRS that operate narrowband. When you comes across a repeater station that you're interested in, you need to check the details to make sure you are programming your radio properly. If the repeater station details doesn't mention anything about narrowband operation, you can assume that the station operates wideband. Most repeater owners that operate their station(s) with narrowband emissions will list that information in the details.
