Split Codes?

I have joined several GMRS groups and forums. I had this posted that I had a question about.

I guess where this new user lives the repeaters have split codes to access the repeater. I

have looked at many repeaters and I haven't saw any split code ones. This would make most off

the shelf radios useless. You would need to special program a business radio or go with btech

radio. Just asking if this is common or obscure?

If you are trying to do split tones the Btech radios don't seem to be able to do it.

 

While requesting access to repeaters, I have only come across two that have had split tones, so not common at all. One of them, didn't have a tone on the input, it did have a tone on output, which I thought was weird. Not really sure what the site owner was thinking about, or is trying to hide actual tone input.

 

As far as making the off the shelf radios useless it isn't entirely true. If you have a dual monitor capable radio (Btech GMRS-v1, you could set the input with the tone to channel A and set Channel B to the output using carrier squelch.

Figured it out, I was just fat finger the columns in CHIRP.and missing the column on every click. It was just an ID10T error.

I think you may want to to step back for a moment and look at the reason there is GMRS.

 

 

General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS). A mobile two-way voice communication service, with limited data applications, for facilitating activities of individual licensees and their family members, including, but not limited to, voluntary provision of assistance to the public during emergencies and natural disasters.

Source: 47 CFR § 95.1703

 

In other words, it is not a service intended for hobbyists (like amateur radio), casual ad-hoc communications (like CB) or commercial operations. Not to say it can't be used for those ends, just that's not the intended purpose. So, if someone wants to set up a repeater, it is really up to them as to how they set it up, including allowing other users access to the system at all.  In that light, my take is if it works for the owner, that's all that counts. And, in a free market economy, the GMRS radio manufacturers' success depends on their ability to meet the needs of the market as a whole and that is likely to be driven by how the FCC defined the service in the first place.  If someone got into GMRS because they thought it would be a "better CB," sooner or later they are likely to be disappointed.

I bet that was me posting to GMRS Amateurs FB page about split codes. There are repeaters in the Denver/Front Range area that all say they use split codes on their information page on this site. I have spent three evenings reading up on the issue. I already have a Midland MXT100 that's been sitting in the box all year, but when I finally set it up in the truck, I found out that it can't do repeaters, let alone split codes anyway. So I've ordered a 50X1, and I'm hoping it will accomplish the task. 

Sent repeater access request last night, and the radio will show up some time this week.

Interesting. That makes it difficult to users to access the sties. Why not just get a LMR licence? I like talking to different stations.

A LMR license won't allow you to talk to anyone who's not covered by that license.

I think that's the goal. Don't want everyone and their mom with an MXT115 bought at Cabelas/Bass Pro just randomly picking the repeater channel and going for it.
