I had to lie on CHRIP.

Question

Posted

I installed CHIRP next...I assume the latest and greatest. Got a BTECH programming cable to use for my Baofeng UV-5R (GMRS version).  The software would not recognize the radio as a Baofeng.....it says it was a Radioditty (sp?) radio. wth? Then under that I had a pick a model that would finally communicate that's nowhere near model UV-5R. What gives? Thanks

I have a feeling it's going to be a similar (if not) the same situation to the Baofeng GM-15/Radioddity GM-30 situation. Which, James, in case you didn't know about that, is the Baofeng GM-15 isn't CHIRP compatible but can be programmed with the Radioddity GM-30 software because they are essentially the same thing, just a different manufacturer (If I'm phrasing that correctly. Still new to GMRS but I believe that's what I gathered through my limited research.

I didn't know that. Thanks. But I have a UV-5R (GMRS). Apparently, that doesn't make any difference. What software do you recommend?

It is common with these CCRs that more than one seller will use the same guts but different label. In many cases, the manufacturer will place the labels on at the plant before shipping to the seller. I have the "Baofeng UV-5R GMRS" and yes, I program it using "Radioddity UV-5G" in CHIRP. Baofeng does have a version of their software that will program it but I like CHIRP better.

Currently, there are three radios that are electronically exactly the same: UV-5G, UV-5X and the UV-5R (GMRS). Anything can happen in the future.

Using the CHIRP setting should work for all of these radios.
