arn Posted December 21, 2023 Report Posted December 21, 2023 North Jersey seems pretty dead in the way of GMRS. Just putting a feeler out there to see if maybe I'm just missing the action or if everyone in NJ is just boring. Quote
OffRoaderX Posted December 21, 2023 Report Posted December 21, 2023 GMRS is not really intended to find anonymous men to chat with for "action". For that kind of "action" you might want to look into H.A.M. radio or the Grindr app for your phone. GMRS is primarily intended for things like communicating with your group while off-roading, hiking, caravanning, etc. so in many/most places it is very quiet. gortex2 and SteveC7010 2 Quote

Just to be clear I need the H.A.M license in order to use the grindr app? Or is that a different license? WRUU653, WRHS218 and SteveShannon 3 Quote

You are going to fit right in on this forum. As our resident Youtube hobo alluded to, GMRS is more of a bring your own contact radio service. I was in a large city yesterday where there are several repeaters and there was no radio traffic, except for me, on the repeaters. I was trying to reach a friend who was on the other side of the valley. He had made some changes to his handheld by accident and couldn't find the repeaters that were programmed into the radio. I did find out that the two repeaters I can reach are now linked. arn, SteveShannon and WRUU653 3 Quote

I'm most likely going to buy a uv-5r gmrs and just let family members use it so I can have someone to talk to. I guess its more about the novelty at first rather than the practicality. Can't wait to use these things in the woods. Quote

If you’re hearing music and broadcast news it’s probably not a repeater. Or if it is they’re operating in violation of the regulations. Repeater traffic should only be people talking to each other. Because the frequencies you hear repeaters on are the same frequencies you hear people transmitting on using simplex it can be impossible to know if something is a repeater based on an occasional transmission unless you hear the repeater ID.
