Loud schreeching whenever I press PTT and talk

Webslinger

Question

So, probably something stupid I did, or overlooked, but programmed in several local repeaters in my area using the Wouxun programming software/cable. Now, any channel I access, ANY channel, screeches back at me when I press the PTT button and talk into the HT. If I press PTT button and stay quiet, no screeching. Only when I talk. Any ideas?

No other radios nearby. Whatever the sound is, it's got 'error' written all over it. A tone sounds like something that would be normal during radio operation. This is a high-pitched squeal (better word), kind of like a hearing aid with the volume up to high.

Edit: Now that I've fiddled with this radio a bit more, here's my findings. The squeal occurs after activating the 'MONI' function of the radio using the PF-2 side key. I'm guessing 'MONI' means monitor. If the radio volume is up halfway, it will squeal when I press the PTT button. Lower than half volume, there is no squeal. When disabling the 'MONI' function, I am able to turn the volume up to max and transmit without the squeal. So, does MONI have anything to do with squelch, as in squelch completely off, or is that different?

And yes the Moni button is monitor. It turns the squelch off so you can hear everything even very weak signals that will not open squelch even on the lowest setting.

Yeah, I actually just got off the phone with BTWR and was told by tech support the MONI function is wide-open, no squelch mode, and that trying to transmit in that mode could (did) cause that feedback (squeal). The tech tried the same thing on a KG-935G Plus he had in hand and got the same result as I did. Thanks for your reply.
