I am sure I am asking this in a newbie fashion but I am lost.  I purchased a Rugged Radio GMR25 which is a rebranded TYT TH-8600 unit.  The unit has the standard GMRS channels/frequencies but then they have a "sub channel".  So channel 1 has 1, 1-10, 1-25 and 2 has 2, 2-10, 2-25 and so on.  My TD-H3 can scan the freq and shows the correct GMRS freq + code 94.8 for -10 and 156.7 for the -25 channel.  So I go into Chirp and see how the TD saves it.  It saves it as a TSQL and the Tone Squelch at the 94.8.  I can hear the Rugged radio but when I send from the TD to the Rugged nothing.   I want to be able to use these sub channels on my hand held but not sure what else needs to be done to TX.

Thanks

You are going to need to research the PL / DPL codes that the 'subchannels' have assigned to them.

Obviously it's going to be using the assigned frequencies for the channels, so the only 'sub' to it is PL tones for transmit and receive.

You have to transmit the codes from the TD-H3.  Put them into function 13, Tx CTCSS.  Put the H3 on the frequency and then press the blue button, press 1 then 3 and press the blue button again and then the up button until you reach the proper tone and press the blue button again.

Should transmit and receive after that.

Sub channels are a misnomer.  There are only 30 channels in GMRS. Subchannels refer to a tone or digital code which is used to tell a radio when to ignore transmissions and it’s just another name for CTCSS, PL, etc.  Every repeater will have a CTCSS tone or a DCS tone on the input, which your transmit tone MUST match or the repeater will ignore your transmission.

However, the tone mode is less limited.  Right now you say Chirp shows you’re set to TSQL.  That means your radio will only break squelch if that particular tone is received. If you set that to TONE, instead of TSQL, it will still send the tone you program, but it will allow anything through.  That’s especially helpful when you’re getting started so you can hear someone tell you you’re using the wrong tone.

Thanks! Yes... but the horrible side effect is that buying more radios! 🙄😁

Wait until you look at the price of some of those top end HF base radios. You'll need a part time job to afford the payments on one.

I am already sitting here with my finger over the "Buy Now" buttons. Yes, buttons. PLURAL. 🤣

The wife just looks at me shaking her head. This is a touchy situation and I am uncertain where she will hide my body.

As long as you get to play with the radios first....

That is my hope!

The key is to play it off very smoothly.  My last wife, not a radio or a gun person, would occasionally question a new radio or gun in the house.  "No, it has always been here.  Don't you remember it?"

Or, you can try, "It was at my mother's house.  She was tired of it taking up space there, so I brought it here."

Best of luck on your new acquisitions!  😁👍

🤣 Solid advice!

My wife is, luckily, a gun person and has never turned away a stray. 😉
Sadly, no such feelings toward radios!

haha... "no, it's always been here" hahaha

Just be cautious in applying that technique.  Sadly, it has its limitations.  My ex did not buy into my story that the other woman in the house had always been there.  😂🤣

its strange. I studied the DTSC, TSQL, and CTCSS tone and get it but I still cant get it to work.  If I set the Tone Mode to TSQL and Tone Squelch to the 94.8 I can receive from the Rugged on the TD-H3 but if I test back from TD to RR I can see the strength meter on the RR pick it up but no sound?

Can you show a screenshot of your program? Whether it be chirp or odmaster?

I find that while odmaster does seemingly import successfully, it doesn't always import CORRECTLY in my experience with the H3.

Hmm. Your list looks markedly different from my list. This is the default in the radio (I have 2 TD-H3s) and the only thing I have changed is the repeaters (not visible here).

I have no duplicate channels the way you do here. What happens if you set both 462.58750 (2-1 and 2-2) to the same tone?

Without knowing the configuration on *both* radios, it's going to be hard to say. Not knowing how their stuff works, is there a way to disable CTC / DTS tones on both and start from 'clean' channels on both?

Alternately, use the TD-H3s Channel / Tone scan feature (Hold down "1") and transmit from the RR and see what the H3 picks up. Their 'privacy code' chart may not line up with the H3s.

@WSDS356 You do know TQSL puts the same tone on both transmit and receive, didn't you? If you only want to send the tone but be able to hear everything on the channel, go to set TONE MODE to TONE with the code in theTONE column.

"Is that a new (guitar - gun radio - RTR tape deck) ???"

No, I've had it a while now.  Assuming she asks the day after I 've bought it, a true statement!

In point of fact though, really don't have issues in that area. I spend on my hobbies within the budget, and she spends on hers likewise...

@RayDiddio If you duplicate like the ch 1, ch 1-1, and ch 1-2 being the same it is so that I can have the "privacy" channel if the others are on that channel.  They would have the same base frequency but the tone would be specific.  (at least that is what I gathered)

@amaff That was the first thing I did, hold down the 1 button and then transmit to the HD from the Rugged radio.  It gave me Freq: and then filled in the Code:

I have cleared the TD-H3 but hesitant to do the Rugged as it works with other so far.  Just not my TD.

@BoxCarbut I want to both Rx and Tx.  what is strange is I Rx fine and when I push the Tx on the TD I can see the modulation on the Rugged just not hear anything.  LIke it is on mute.  I go to just Ch 1 and both work fine.

That is what the tone codes do. It does not stop the radio from receiving it just mutes the audio (as I understand it).
