Questions on: Motorola XPR 6580 (800-900MHZ Band)

Just recently purchased a used Motorola XPR 6580 DMR on eBay, and purchased a battery. The battery isn’t OEM and I am having issues with it powering up.

 

Any way I can test this thing and find out why it won’t power on? Any way to bench test the unit?

 

Need some ideas I really want to use this thing

Twp things, are you certain the battery is charged and do you have another battery you can use for a test? Otherwise, my recommendation is to go to a radio shop selling Motorola radios and ask them to check it out. You may have to pay a diagnostic fee but they will diagnose the problem.

If you have a digital multi-meter you can check the contact on the back side of the battery pack for voltage. A freshly charged battery pack should read about 7.5VDC.

I wouldn't be surprised if the battery pack is toast. Not uncommon for used radios.

What are you wanting to use the radio for ? Its really not much use other than in the LMR world in that band and very specific at that.

You can put these on the Ham 33cm band with a software hack for the radio programming CPS. See attached file

I wanted to listen to many of the 800-900 frequencies like a scanner essentially. Here in San Diego the police and fire, park rangers others all broadcast in the band in with this was designed for.

I have no attachment to the radio really and I’m actually going to get a new TIDradio H3 something looked badass with 8 bands and Bluetooth programming I’m way excited since I live right by ext to San Diego Limburg field (Point Loma) I always get a nice selection of channels to hear in on.

The radio is DMR. Your not going ot listen to the San Diego Police or any other public safety on it as they are P25 and the radio is not designed to decode that format. Other than a scanner you will not find a radio to listen in on that stuff.

A buddy picked up some cheap XTS5000’s at a few swaps. Used some utility to create a fake authentication file for the radio. He says he uses them to monitor his local 700/800 MHz public safety frequencies.
