Wouxun kg-905g Repeater Listening

I've purchased my first radio (Wouxun 905g) and, after doing a radio check, had success connecting to a repeater and making contact. But when I leave my radio on the repeater channel, I never hear anyone else transmitting. It wasn't until I did my radio check and cleared that I heard someone else begin a conversation with someone else. But since then, nothing. I know the usual answer is that there may not be traffic on the repeater, but given the location and range it has, I don't think that's the case. Does anyone know if I need to do something specific to open up the repeater and listen for others? One post I saw said some radios need you to push the menu button or something to get connected, open the repeater, and hear the transmissions.

Nope. If you spoke and got a reply back, the thing appears to be setup correctly. You can turn off your Receive tone and have the radio open to any traffic on that channel (not just repeater traffic). But if it's a busy area, that can be a mess trying to separate every FRS radio on that channel from your repeater.

Menu? Or Monitor? I'm not really sure what that's referring to. You don't need to "connect" to the repeater to hear it. It transmits just like your radio, on a frequency, usually with a tone that you can choose to listen for or not (as per the above). At least on GMRS repeaters, there's nothing else needed to hear the thing.

Your good.  Some repeaters have very little traffic even huge ones.  If you’re really interested In chatting with other random people on the repeater just get on and ID and ask if any one is out there. Strike up a conversation.  Ask questions.

Most repeaters ham/gmrs are going to be quiet 90% of the time....that's just the way it is now.....sad but true.

In my experience those with use more than 10% of the time are usually used by people who won't let you get a word in edgewise and/or you don't want to listen to anyway.
