GMRS / HAM assistance in Ashville area?

Ya, I have my browser locked down pretty hard and the site still gets through.  It's from a political site, but the article isn't political.  And I know some browsers make it hard to get to those sites.

I also have a naked browser.  In my case it's Chrome.  I have nothing added to it.  No blockers no anti script nothing added so when I find one of those types of sites I can still get there by switching over to that browser.  If I can't get in on that browser I don't need to see the site.

I have Mint loaded on a HD, but my favorite is Fedora wkstn 40 now -- for basic use and a few music apps

My laptop has multiple personality syndrome.......

I have a few different Linux distros to mess around with, each on it's own HD. I never got CHIRP to see my cables

so I have to use Win7 to use a variety of programming utilities. It will run the latest version of CHIRP

so I have to settle for the 'legacy' version which still works for most part.

Both eyes open now......and I see a typo on my last post here.

Win 7 will not run the latest version of CHIRP for me......

On topic, I sure hope all those folks affected by them hurricanes can get back to some form of normal life soon.

Being from CA, I would rather deal with an earthquake any day over a tornado or hurricane.

You can also fix your typo by clicking on the three dots I. The upper left corner of your post and choosing “Edit”.

Small earthquakes maybe, but large ones can be just as devastating as tornadoes or hurricanes.  Fortunately it has been a while since we have had one of those here in Montana.

I was in SF during the Loma Prieta earthquake in '89.

Working for the telco, at the time, I had some repair jobs on Treasure Island. The Bay Bridge collapse was on the Oakland side and although the bridge was closed to through traffic, the suspension span was open to Yerba Buena and Treasure Island. Only the far right lane was open and when I went over it, my telco van was the only vehicle on it.....going and coming back into the City. That felt a little strange since it was usually very busy. Pac Bell never went down, only too many people trying to get dial tone caused people to think the systems were down. Afterwords we had dozens of no dial tone tickets that were 'found ok'.

There was a strong one in SF in '57 too --- I was 5yrs old........I wonder if Jerry Lee Lewis' "whole lotta shakin goin on" was inspired by that since it was written at that time.

Mt. Mitchell 2m repeater (145.190, no tone).  Spivey Mtn. (146.910, 91.5) was also doing similar yesterday.  There's also a net on HF, 7232 I think but I don't have that to confirm freq.  Have not heard of any coordinated GMRS activity.  Note that State Emerg. Mgmt. has poo-pooed hams doing on the ground welfare checks; phone and email are allowed for what that's worth (mostly useless).   Also 147.105 (91.5) on Bearwallow Mtn in Henderson Co.

Screw what the state emergency mismanagement agency thinks. People were on the ground going door to door helping people before EmErGeNcY MaNaGeMeNt even got out of bed. I do not care what is allowed or what is authorized. If people are needing to get in touch with their families then me and my radios are going to help.

EDIT: Hang on. They were actually telling people they could not use ham radio to check on people? Because we need to stop and talk about that. Here. I can not even describe how uninterested I am in what is authorized or allowed. I am not seeking authorization in the first place.

Governments are quick to step on people's rights when they get an opportunity to use their favorite word - emergency.

My rights are not only my rights when things are calm and peaceful. EDIT: I'll go one step further to claim my rights are not only my rights when I follow all their rules.

I am not interested at all in this country they are trying to shape things in to.

No, you're mixing up the process.  The state did not try to regulate ham radio, at least not in any enforced way.  They told ham operators, in particular the net control who went along with their approach, that hams or other individuals listening should not be doing the actual on-the-ground welfare checks.  They said to refer the requests to the central state NIMS position which in this case was AUXCOMM and they would follow up at the appropriate time after search and rescue phase was completed.  But they were not doing anything with them right away.  It was a very poor, short-sighted approach since doing the checks quickly could save lives.

You do have the right and you can select which rule to not follow and if you exercise that right and violate a rule of your choosing, you will be facing consequences and the Government or the responsible regulatory entity will exercise their right to take the appropriate action and bring either criminal or civil charges against you and you will be guaranteed that you will have your say in a court of law.
