Forced low power on repeater channel 17

Question

Posted

I have a Baofeng GM 21 handheld. When I try to program a repeater that uses 462.6000. I have to use channel 25 on this particular radio, and it will automatically do the offset but for some reason it will only transmit in low power. I have a repeater set up on this channel and when I key up, I do get a repeater tone after I let go, but it’s not transmitting my voice. I do have the correct transmit d tone set.

question is is it supposed to only transfer in low power? And can that be the reason why my voice isn’t going through although I am hitting the repeater?
thank you in advance!

-Jim

  • That channel should be able to transmit at High power - are you sure you went into the menus whilst on that channel, set it to HIGH, and SAVED the change?
  • Also - not transmitting your voice would have nothing to do with being on High or Low power... How are you testing to determine that your voice is not going through?

Yes, it is at the high power and I have tested with another radio that does monitor channel 17 and no voice comes through but the relayer tone at the end does. I tried programming the repeater on channel 17, but it won’t let me. This does not have a repeater channel 17 on this radio. That’s why I was using channel 25.
channels 23 and up only transmit on low power apparently it may be FRS related. But those channels do have a plus symbol for direction of offset. I am new to this, but that seems to indicate to me that these channels are for repater use

  • Get your two radios at least 100 feet apart, then test again for your voice
  • On a GMRS radio you cannot program a repeater on channel 17 - on a GMRS radio channel 17 is Simplex only channel.
  • Repeater/channel power outputs have nothing at all to do with FRS
  • You are very confused.

My guess is you are doing something wrong (see last item on the list above) - but Channel 25 should be able to transmit at HIGH power - are you saying the radio is set/showing HIGH power, but only a low-power amount of RF-Electricies are coming out when you measure it, or, does the radio indicate that it is set to LOW power?

It is very possible that I am confused.
funny thing is, it was set to high power by default. Although it was only transmitting on low power. I went in and changed the setting to low power saved it then changed the setting back to high power and saved it and now it is transmitting on high power.

By the way, this is your repeater. I am located at 210 and Mountain Avenue. I am indoors using the long with antenna supplied with the radio. It is possible I am on the fringe of being able to transmit to your repeater. I am no longer getting a tail response from your repeater now. Not sure what’s going on. I am recovering from cancer and I can be a bit foggy on things, but I’ve checked things over several times and it seems to be set correctly. Also, thank you very much for responding.

The repeater has a feature where it will go into "F-Off" mode when someone keeps keying it up..over and over.. without saying anything.. not sure that was you.. but.. it went into that mode earlier, but its back to normal now so give it a try (just say something when you test it)..

Some manufacturers confuse the issue by naming repeater channels RP15 through RP22.  Other manufacturers simply continue the numbering from 23 through 30, so when you said Repeater Channel 17, you were really on channel 17, which is not a repeater channel.

Second, I am not familiar with the radio shown and I don’t want to add confusion.  It appears to show T-DCS is OFF.  Does that mean it isn’t sending a DCS code, @OffRoaderX?

Side question, I have the UV21r (UV21 Pro V2) and it 'looks like' this GM21. Would it... never mind, I'm off to find an operators manual for the GM21 to see if the menu and features are similar to my UV21"r".
