Repeaters with same cinfig

Question

Posted

Hi all. I'm a radio newb. I've been reading a lot and have watched countless videos on GMRS radios and repeaters.

I understand the general concept and purpose of repeaters, but have some questions.

1. I have 2 repeaters in my area.  One is approximately 20 miles SSE of me. The other is 25 miles north. They both are on the same frequency and use the same RX/TX tones.

2. What or who determines what the tones are? The repeater owner?

3. Is it common for repeaters in close proximity of each other to use the same settings?

Thanks in advance.

2. Yes, the repeater owner. Unfortunately, there is no formal coordination in GMRS so coordination relies on repeater owners being proactive and considerate.

3. No, and unfortunately when it does happen this can cause issues for people who are within range of both.  There are eight different repeater channels.  Unless all eight are taken one of these repeater owners probably should have chosen something else.
