Multiple repeaters at same frequency

Question

Posted

I'm new to the world of GMRS radios (actually, all radios) and this is probably a basic question, but here goes. When programming in repeaters, how do you go about accounting for multiple repeaters that use the same frequencies. I believe that tone codes are used to delineate one repeater from the other, but is it possible to program these into the radio as two separate entries? If so, how...just continue by adding the second repeater at Channel 30, and so on? Or am I missing something? Thanks in advance for any help.

On the Midland radios, I think you can only program 1 repeater for each pair, meaning you have to switch the tones when you want to switch repeaters. Others are similar to the Midlands

You can add your own custom channels with the MXT500. I had to do a firmware update on mine to get more than 33 memory channels. After the update, I had either 100 or 199 memory channels to use. I don't remember now.

I can't speak for the Midland models with everything built into the hand mic such as the MXT 575. Those models might not have that ability. Others can chime in on that.

@Photog1018 as long as your radio has enough memory channels, then yes just add different repeaters on the memory channels above what came stock as long as your radio allows that. You can have as many saved channels as you want with the same channel/frequency and different tones as you want to program.

It depends entirely on what radio you are using. On the Midland radios, I think you can only program 1 repeater for each pair, meaning you have to switch the tones when you want to switch repeaters. Others are similar to the Midlands. The Part 95 certified LMR radios (Motorola, Kenwood, etc.) can just add another entry for another repeater.

what radio are you programming??    On most radios you can program multiple repeaters even with the same PL codes.  Just apply a unique name/identifier to distingush them.  YOu'll have a lot more flexibility using the programing software for your radio...

I believe it was 128 channels on the firmware upgrade date fof the MXT500.

Thanks. I couldn't remember since it's been over a year since I have owned a MXT500. I know on mine, I had to do the firmware update first.

To simply even further: You create a new custom channel with the correct tones.  There are only a very few radios that do not allow this. If you tell us what brand and model of radio we can give you more specifics.

Thank you. I presently have an unlocked Wouxon KG-UV9PX, and there are two GMRS repeaters in my local area that utilize the same frequency pair, albeit with different tones. I understand some radios offer channels 31-39 for additional repeaters (if I'm not misunderstanding) but the Wouxon docs that came with the radio make no mention of this (unless I missed it). In my truck, I have a Midland MXT575 but due to rotator cuff surgery I can't drive for about 6 weeks, so I'm playing with the Wouxon right now.

That's a H.A.M. radio, not a GMRS radio, so now you're going to have to do everything manually.. Find a channel, enter the transmit frequency and the offset, and the tones.. I'm sure someone will chime in with all the details, but, I'm out.

But the good news is that @Photog1018 has hundreds of programmable channels.

Got it. And I understand completely. Thanks again for taking the time to answer.
