Wouxun KG-1000G-PLUS external speaker issues

Question

Posted

My old Jeep is noisy. I added a Lido headrest speaker and used a 3.5mm "Y" adapter to connect the speaker to both out puts as directed in the manual. I only get output on the external speaker to area b, no matter how I have the speakers set on the radio (radio, mic, both)

What is going on with this radio?

The Y adapter is the most logical issue. However and this may sound silly, have you turned both volumes up?
Also I saw this note in the manual “The radio must be powered off/on after external speakers are connected before they will become active.”

Yes, tried all of that

Electrically this should be simple.  Are you certain both output ports work?
If a single mono speaker works fine plugged into either of the outputs individually then you know the ports both work and are active.  Better yet, plug two separate mono speakers with mono plugs.  Do they both work simultaneously?

One last thing to try is to use a mixer to combine the two separate audio feeds.  Most mixers are meant for line level outputs rather than speaker level, but if you can find something that matches the impedance and will accept speaker level output it should work. Or you can use speaker level to line level converters and then run the outputs into the mixer, and then take the mixed output and amplify it to feed a single speaker, but that seems like a lot of work.

I ran into the same problem about a year ago when I tried several Y adaptors with my KG-1000G. All of the adaptors were stereo to stereo. They work fine when connecting a single mono speaker to a single port but not when trying to use both ports at the same time.

As I stated before, part of the problem is the impedance mismatch. And @SteveShannon a mixer would definitely help along with the correct mono to stereo y adaptor.

The only thing I have not tried yet was using an actual stereo speaker with both left and right speakers in one unit.

Some radios, like the Icom IC-2730, will push audio out for side A and side B from one single port. But the KG-1000G definitely won't.

along with the correct mono to stereo y adaptor.

I think it really should be 2 channel mono to single channel mono combiner.  Yes, it’s taking two outputs, which we typically considered stereo, and combining them into a single speaker, but specifying a mono to stereo Y adapter may result in one of the connectors being a stereo connector.
@OldJunk2 really needs an adapter that has two mono plugs (tip and sleeve only, no ring connector) with the tips connected to each other and the sleeves connected to each other leading to the appropriate mono connector (depending on what the speaker he’s trying to use has; if it indeed has a stereo plug then you’re right, but if it has a mono plug then he needs a mono jack with only a tip and sleeve connector.)

Most of the adapters out there are two TS (which is mono with a tip and sleeve) to a single TRS (which is stereo with a tip, ring, and sleeve).  Someone who is hoping to combine two separate mono speaker outputs to a single mono speaker doesn’t want that.  Instead they want two TS to a single TS, mono on all three connectors.

Here is the one I found on Amazon:

This is what I found as far as a dual male mono to female stereo y adaptor. I don't know 100% if that would even work.

&D 3.5mm Stereo Female to Dual 3.5mm Mono Male Audio Cable, 3ft 3.5mm 1/8" TRS Female to 2 x 3.5mm 1/8" TS Male Y Breakout Cable Splitter

I might be the guinea pig for $6. If I get that adaptor then I can try it with my mono Icom SP35 and along with a stereo speaker that I use with my Xiegu G90. The G90 only has a headphone jack which is stereo and a mono speaker doesn't work well. Again muffled sound.

@brasda91 Thanks for sharing that link.  Yes that is always an option. But I don't want to have speakers right next to my head like that for several reasons.  One  is the fact that I wear hearing aids. Another is safety, I try to keep things that can be projectiles in an accident down to a minimum

I cringe every time I see people bejewel their steering wheels and dashes right overtop the airbags. Thats nothing but a claymore waiting to go off.

I wear hearing aids too. It's not an issue. This actually keeps me from having to turn the radio up excessively.

I don't know why people keep commenting on "projectiles". There is no reason to think this would be a projectile. Projectiles are loose items laying in the passenger compartment. This mount is secure to the headrest. I've been a vol firefighter/EMT for years. I've seen my fair share of vehicle accidents and never once did I think this would be unsafe.

To each their own.

I do not trust anything attached to the headrest to stay put in an accident. And I too have seen my fair share of accidents and weird things do happen in an accident. I personally won't take the chance if I don't have to.

Plus I don't want any type of speakers right next to my head while driving. I want to be able to hear everything that's going on.
