  2. Other than one might look slightly better on paper, there's no real world advantage of one over the other in real world use. Too many other variables come to play such as mounting considerations, feed line, and the position of the stars on any given night. Best to install what works best for you intended use and not dwell too much over what the "experts" say.
  3. The guy in the video made a mistake. He confused the 467Mhz channels with the 462Mhz channels with the same frequency past the decimal. As long as the radio is used on the 467Mhz frequencies the 2 watt output is legal. It might not even be capable of accessing those frequencies.
  4. • Me • 2021 Taco TRD Offrroad • Depends on the group, but usually GMRS 17 or some FRS channel that works for everybody • Old Mill Creek Rd and Ben Fly in Hickman County, TN.
  5. I have an SG7900 with the UHF mount too. I guess I should stick it on the roof rack and see how well it works. It might surprise me like the CA-2x4SR and NR240CA did.
  6. This affected everyone and I don’t believe it was related to our length of membership.
  7. Kind of a weird notice. I’m curious what the time out factor is set at.. I’ve been here close to four years and that was a first. I went to my profile and changed it there and used the same password.
  8. Ignoring requests could also be a nonconfrontational way of telling you NO. As an alternative, you could look up the owners call sign on the data base. That includes their mailing address. Then, horror of horrors, send them a letter. It worked before all forms of electronic communication and still works today unless... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PU5xxh5UX4U
  9. There was a fairly serious data breach not long ago. One of the other forum I'm on put that on the opening screen to force folks to change their passwords.
  10. Thankyou guys sofar. I I am getting help from my friends from talk2me.us in the gmrs department. Thankyou for responding to my text
  11. I've been waiting a month for two. I don't think this site is very active these days, or so it seems. Maybe no one is responding to requests anymore. Who knows? lol
  12. I talk 90 miles with a J-Pole for a remote portable repeater mounted on a fibergalss RV. Just as good as my Midland whip mounted on my truck roof.. Performace wise and depending on they type of no ground plane antenna, there is no difference.. Some no-ground plane antennas peerform pretty bad, just as some ground plane whip... Do some research on your antenna choice and see if you can get some perfoamce tips
  13. Go to your membership account and change it from there if you worry this is a information grab from a 3rd party trying to steal your information. I changed mine through the pop up and so far nothing nefarious has happened.
  14. Other than one not needing any metal to act as a ground plane, no.
  15. I don’t know. Only Rich can answer that question.
  16. I haven't had to change my password ever since I joined the group and now, I'm not sure why we all off a sudden we need to?
  17. Yes. WRKC935 hits the nail on the head on all counts. It is also important for the radio system to be bonded in case there is an electrical short between the radio system conductors like antenna cable and any hot conductors of an electrical system. The only way some breakers can sense a fault when a communications line become energized is if there is a return path back to the electrical panel that is bonded to the neutral conductor. The breaker cannot clear the fault without a return path. The earth is a poor conductor and is not an effective fault current return path. Ground fault circuit interruptors (GFCI) sense an imbalance of current on the hot and neutral conductors. If the difference is around 5 milliamps or so, the GFCI trips. This is why a GFCI doesn't need a ground wire to work. It senses when current is being drawn by other sources and that current isn't returning to the source (electrical panel).
  18. I also noted something else peculiar with this radio as well. If your right channel is set to a VHF frequency and you tune in to a UHF frequency on the left such as a weather band frequency, the radio shows that it can receive the UHF signal but the volume of that signal is practically mute. It doesn't matter which side is set to main, the audio does not change. In order to hear clear audio, both sides either need to be in UHF or VHF. the radio cannot scan both at the same time it seems. Does anyone know of a setting that may affect this or is the radio just not able to tune into both UHF and VHF simultaneously?
  19. That's my understanding. There's a lot of weather between a sunny day and a full-on direct lightning strike, so we want to protect against as much of it as we can.
  20. Ah, okay. The wire isn't really carrying a current in the usual sense. Good. 8 gauge wire is a lot cheaper than 4 gauge.

  22. Is there any advantage of a ground plane antenna over a non ground plane antenna. Does either one perform better in an urban or rural area?
  23. Do we allow commercial ads for services? Considering the Facebook page mistakes and image it's either an offshore scam or AI generated (pretty much a scam either way you look at it. Anyone needing program help only needs to ask for it here. We have a pretty deep experience pool to draw from.
  24. On the bed rail of my truck, I got good SWRs with the Comet except on the 2m band. I use the 2m band a lot, so that was a no-go. However, on the roof of my car, I get SWRs < 1.5:1 on 2m, 70cm, GMRS, MURS, and -- to my surprise -- even 1.25m. I haven't had an opportunity to find out whether it actually performs on 1.25 meters, but at least it won't blow up my radio. So, yes, it's a ground plane antenna, but it was better than I expected without one. As I said earlier, I thought the SG7900 was an NGP antenna when I bought it, and since it performs just fine where it is, I'm going to leave it. Excellent SWRs and farz on GMRS, 70cm, and 2m. I guess it is a no ground plane antenna -- at least on the bed rail of my truck. I'm currently running a Comet SBB-224 on the car, and boy is it a good performer! It didn't like the bed rail either, but it really likes the roof of the car. It's officially a tri-band (2m, 1.25m, 70cm) but it really reaches out on GMRS as well. It has a 1.2:1 SWR on MURS, but I've never actually tried it, and likely never will. Still, it's there if I need it. The 2x4 actually has a little better farz on 70cm and GMRS, but not by a lot. That's why I'd like to know how it performs on 1.25m. Likely the 224 will go on the truck if I ever get around to having an NMO put on the roof.
  25. I'm an avid offroader / outdoorsman. I got into GMRS / radios in general as a result of the offroad sport. - 2006 Hummer H3 with an LS swap on 37s, custom locking front differential, manual shift NP241, sliders, armor, sleeping platform and cold seltzers. KG-1000G Plus remote mounted with an EM-Wave GPS/NMO combo mount and a Laird antenna. The mount replaced the old 2G sharkfin antenna. - GMRS 20/22/REPT-19/REPT-20 depending on the location, other group channels and which mobile repeater has been deployed. - I am a member / trainer / guide over at ExploringNH.com. We frequent local Class 6 Roads throughout the state of NH and Class 4 Roads throughout the state of VT. These 'trails' are simply un-maintained town-owned right-of-ways offering various levels of difficulty. Numerous private properties, including some NEA properties, as well as Jericho State Park in Berlin, NH.
