I'll bite. What is a "fixed station" and how does it differ from a base station?

I can no longer remember my CB call sign but for some funny reason, I can still remember my first Service No. B23..... before SSN numbers were used.

You can own any Radio you want, however where you transmit is depended on your License that you acquired, and the max aloud TX/wattage allocated in that frequency range. Most unlocked radio's like the UV-5RM are ham radio's that will transmit in the GMRS band. However the TX Power will exceed what the FCC allows for GMRS band. You can program any radio you want to frequencies to your liking, but again transmitting on frequencies your not licensed is against the law / FCC regulations. I am not promoting to transmitting with more Power but I have yet to see the FCC knock on your door because you were transmitting instead of 0.5 watts you hit 2 watts. FCC has better things to do. The FCC will come knocking if there are multiple complaints of you interfering with neighbors ( alarm system, TV, and possible other electronics). Just my 2 cents.. Have fun.

Nope. A lot of them do because it *can* decrease confusion in new users. What's required is that the radio enforce the rules. The rules don't say anything about what memory slot a frequency sits in. My "nice" GMRS radios (nice for me...), KG-905Gs, will force the radio to low power if you put, say, GMRS Channel 8 in memory slot 20, or allow high power and frequency offset for repeaters channels if you put them in, say, memory slot 8, where a low power interstitial channel would normally go. Lazily programmed (from the factory, I mean) radios force things rigidly in place because it's easier than enforcing the rules more broadly.

now if the antenna happens to be shaped like a Cat D9, it might do something to the hill... But other than that, no.

As many times as the question is ask. I've been around since the days of bulletin boards. Newbies are always asking the same questions. We can either insult them or invite them. I've always been in favor of inviting.

Not so sure about bigger better antenna doing anything to the immutable impenetrable hill. But getting it above said hill will do the trick.

For future reference, typically on GMRS radios they are type accepted meaning the first 30 channels can't be changed. if you copy pasta one of those channels to memory 31 you can change adjust add tones as you please with now issues. they are just required to lockout those first 30 for fcc approvals.

..we will reserve judgement for now. With a UV9g, you dont need to think about the offset - these are the basic steps: Put the radio on the correct REPEATER CHANNEL - Probably listed as either "Repeater 20" or Channel 28 Go into the Transmit CTC menu and enter the tone IGNORE/REMOVE the Receive tone as it is optional and at this point its only going to add to your confukulation Be sure to save all your changes (you may need to resort to the manual) Push the talk-button and talk, let go of button and listen for the Kerchunk/Static back from the repeater, or someone responding If it doesn't work then either you have the wrong channel, the tone is wrong, you are not close enough to the repeater (just because you can hear it does not mean it can hear you) or the repeater is down/broken/offline. The fact that you said you "have the offset" leads me to surmise that you've done it wrong.
