Ok, got the ball rolling somewhat. I ordered 24 feet of Commscope LDF4-50A 1/2" Hardline and another Comet CA-712EFC. Still need to wait for them to arrive and then the availability for my buddy to bring the bucket truck by to git R done.

did a full reset of my radio and tried on RPT4 and managed to get a rreply, now just need to figure out why when i program a repeater that its not working

Welcome good set up so far. What do you do for an activity while using gmrs? Ham is great for chatting with others and you seam well on Your way to that. But gmrs is for use by friends and family, people you already know, while doing something, hiking, biking, road tripping ……. The list goes on.

In the Houston area, the Memorial Park repeater and the Channelview repeater both still get some traffic. Not as much as when linked but still you can have a nice chat every once in a while.

That photo is inaccurate, that or the hand belongs to an 8yo. I am a small person (5'2", 135lbs). It is definitely not that big. In the pic it looks bigger than a UV5R (I have two of those) and this is significantly smaller than that. Here is mine, hopefully this gives a decent size reference. The speaker mic is a mini, just a fraction over 1" wide. I'll take a pic with it in my hand (or with something that will give good size reference) tomorrow if that helps.

Hi - A friends Dad had a Ham Radio I was given the chance to play around with when a kid. Looking to have a communication back up via radio - should someone, somewhere simply decide to turn of internet digital access here. [Saw a note from a guy about being prepared when there is a digital communications block - just when Chinese and Russian paratroopers are jumping into New York City - which is not something any of us want to see occur ]. That being said - Have my GRMS License [Call Sign: WSHS561] and am studying for my Radio Technician License. I have purchased a: AnyTone AT-555n II, 10 Meter Radio Mobile Transceiver [Which appears to be a 'CB' type radio for install in my truck - looking at how to do that. And how to seek others in the frequency ranges available. Although I have been able to connect with the NOAA transmitter channel in Chapel Hill, North Carolina]. and a Baofeng AR-5RM Ham Radio, Multi Bands - Two Way Radio Handheld. [Which I have also been able to connect with the NOAA transmitter in Chapel Hill]. I shared a picture of my radios in this post - I have a real stand on the way for the equipment next to my desk. Looking for help connecting with another GRMS licensed reapetr to chat. And will be checking in as I progress with my Technicians License study for testing. Thanks and Cheers! Really? I’ve never experienced any issues at all with tyt radios baufang radios Motorola radios or kenwood radios. Radioditty and tidd radios just by the listed issues on this site alone are the worst radios I’ve ever seen. Fallowed very closely by midland. Just look at the actual facts on just this site. Count the number of issues with radiotitty Tidd and midland. If you count correctly you will see un biased factual numbers they have more issues then any others. I’m sorry it’s just a fact. Down vote me all you want but if you can count you will find numbers don’t lie. So if you need to, get a 5 year old to count how many times on just this one site these listed radios have issues right out of the box.

You will need to join the Texas GMRS network which is free to get the info for all the repeaters. There is a Facebook group as well you can join to connect with folks. Since the repeaters have been unlinked its pretty rare to hear any activity on them. Some of the repeaters have been damaged by storms and tornados last year and not getting repaired. While others have been completely removed all together due to no use, but they still show on the website.

Always great news when a radio has full support in Chirp. I already have the 936 G Plus and UV8H, so I don't really need this radio as well.... or do I?

I think I can count on one or both hands the number of times that the Radioddity "issues" on this forum resulted in requiring to send back the radio under warranty and get a replacement... The rest were all generic issues that all radios easily suffer from. To the OP: sorry I don't have a DB-25 (G - GMRS non-DMR model) to help you with.

Believe it or not, I am 100% onboard with you on this! Especially the part about no one having to agree with your opinions. All of us operate radio in a unique and massively geographically diverse country and naturally want to promote ideas best serving our individual needs, wants and experiences. No wonder there is plenty of room for healthy debate. I always strongly encourage people to debate their opinions in a public forum and amongst their representative law makers then let the best ideas win.

Well, i have built both the ladder lead version and the cooper version..The ladder lead actually cost me more money mostly because, like you say, i had a lot of the copper stuff laying around where i had to buy a mininum of 25' ladder lead to get going. (I actually bought 50') The Cooper was also easier to construct where the ladder version was a little more difficult due to razor cutting the dilelectric but was a lot easier to tune. Putting both versions to test under different scenarios convinced me that the copper versions performed better and not by much. I still use both and keep both with me in my RV for my portable repeater setup. I also experimented with dipoles and mobile antennas and found the J-Pole just worked better for my portable application. Yes, the dipole will out perform the J-pole but my cheap telescoping flag pole wouldn't handle the load in the slightest breeze.

The Wouxun KG-935G and 905G both have group scan capability. Or the 935H if you want the HAM version.

If your cable is for the TM-481a and is good working order, it should work on the TK-880. Depending on how the cable built, it will require the appropriate driver. Just make sure that the driver is compatible with Windows 11. If you're not sure if you need the Prolific or the FTDI driver, load both drivers on your computer and set the port selection according to the Device Manager. With the radio connected to the cable, pull the cable connector in and out of the computer while viewing the Device Manager and that may indicate the port the computer wants to use and set the port selection in the CPS accordingly. If the cable is a genuine Kenwood cable or built by Blue Max 49ers, you should be good to go. If it is built by some unknown provider that sells cheap Pandaland stuff from a business that is not dedicated to or does not specialized in only radio electronics, I would round-file the cable and get a quality built cable before you brick the radio permanently.
