I also had some mixed experiences with Wouxun and BTWR. For example, their KG-935G had a terrible implementation of the NOAA weather alerts. Then they released their KG-935G Plus. The initial model was a beta release and the "plus" version the final product. I am curious what they will tell me this time around. I will make sure to let you know here. Cheers!

I have a Wouxun KG-805G HT that decided to lose all of its programming every time it was turned off. It would revert to the Chinese factory default with only CH01, CH02, etc. and Chinese voice prompts. I kept reprogramming it and would keep it turned on in the charging stand to prevent this. I contacted BTWR.com and they replied that it sounds like the chip that stores the program info has gone bad, but it is out of warranty, so have a nice day. Just my experience. I just turned it off and put it back in the box.

FCC Improves On-line Interference Reporting
wilbilt62 replied to intermod's topic in FCC Rules Discussion
Thank you for the information in the OP. I have been experiencing loud static interference on all of the GRMS frequencies in a specific location nearby for a few years. It is strong enough to break squelch on my mobile radio (which is usually in scan mode). All 462 and 467 Mhz frequencies are affected. Interestingly, this happens in close proximity to the local Walmart store. I notice it when driving by for a block or so in any direction. I don't actually shop there. Anyway, I filed a "consumer complaint" with the FCC and received an email confirmation they had received it. We'll see. Thanks!- 42 replies

RoadApple started following Question about programming my new Radiodity DB40-G and What did I do wrong?

You did nothing wrong. Someone was just trying to bamboozle you. Ignore them. Remember - GMRS shares frequencies with unlicensed FRS where, for all practical purposes, there are no rules, protocols or norms and people will say or claim just about anything. Not that all GMRS users are well behaved either...

Most of us have blocked SOCALGMRS so we no longer see his rude mean comments.. I dont think his problem is a result of a naging wife. No women would want anything to do with him. The best way to deal with the idiot is ignore him.. Hover over his member icon, select ignore, make sure to check all the boxes on the bottom.. He'll go away.

Question about programming my new Radiodity DB40-G
RoadApple replied to WSHW974's topic in General Discussion
I'm glad you were able to get your radio programmed! It would seem silly to not allow tones to be assigned to any and all channels on a GMRS radio as some folk use tones (so call "privacy" codes) to filter out noise on simplex in addition to activating repeaters. I've yet to encounter a "fully locked down" radio, but I guess they are out there..... -
yup, that is what I ended up doing. if I get a reply from B2WR I will post it here. in my case, they were gone for the weekend can't really blame them, can I? Anyway, we will see what they will say. I wonder if they can update the firmware... another useless and stupid reply. I often wonder what motivates folks to post such rude and condescending posts, and all I can think of is that their wives must beat them and so they try to pass on that beating through their posts. either that, or these are insecure teenagers trying to sound adult. either way, what a waste of perfectly good bits...

Yes, it's clunky. Same reason for purchase.

BoxCar replied to warthog74's topic in FCC Rules Discussion
The FCC may levy the fine, but the money goes to the Treasury department as part of the General Fund. The only parties that quickly pay are those with licenses the FCC grants as they can cancel or deny further application or renewal. -

In the U.S., GMRS has no courses. It’s a personal radio service that simply requires paying for a license ($35 for ten years.) Amateur radio does have three levels of participation. Each require passing a test. Again, the license costs $35 for ten years, but in many places the test is free or very inexpensive. My club has free testing. Studying can consist of merely memorizing the answers (which still imparts some knowledge, regardless of how some people might act) or working through the questions and supporting information until you understand the principles. One source of free learning that I greatly enjoyed using when I studied for my ham license was hamstudy.org. It offers flash card type learning with references for every question in the amateur radio test pool so you can learn as much as you want. Based on your response I believe you’re in England. I’m sure they have something similar. Again, good luck!

Best of luck getting that figured out!

I have an Aoyue SMT hot air rework station. It works, but it’s big and clunky. The only reason I got it instead of something else was because it was cheap. I mean really cheap.

Recommendation on a mobile with removable faceplate
WRYZ926 replied to WRKW444's topic in Equipment Reviews
There are plenty of amateur band radios with removable face plates that can be MARS modded/unlocked to work on GMRS. Some work better than others. Again they will not be Part 95 certified. Some people actually do care about that. And repeater offsets will have to be manually programmed through the radio or using CPS from the manufacturers or CHIRP. None of them will automatically put in the correct repeater offset. I know for a fact that the TYT, Icom, RT Systems and CHIRP software will not automatically input the correct offset for GMRS repeaters on radios that have been unlocked/MARS modded. Yes I have a few that have been modded/unlocked. I can say that the TYT TH-7800 and TH-8600 performs better on GMRS than a modded Icom IC-2730. The Wouxun KG-Q10H does just as well as the KG-Q10G and KG-935G when it comes to hand held radios. -
