  2. Using it when you sign off is all that is required, I thought.
  3. Ya, 30' isn't all that high for an antenna. Mine is at 40' and I might get 5 miles in the right direction. Lots of hills and trees in my area though.

    Is GMRS what i need

Roughing it has gotten a lot easier. Reminds me of people claiming to go camping when they really me glamping.
  6. They have rest stops/charging stations along the trail, one at least.. I happened across one in the Holcomb Valley above Big Bear while off-roading a few months ago. primitive bathrooms, shower, and solar panels/batteries and hookups for charging.
  7. Yup, use to do that all the time, even analog cell freqs using field strength metters
  8. I think the only thing that matters using high power on an HT is it will drain your battery 5 times faster then low power.
  9. Surprisingly a lot of hikers use GMRS. Living here in the desert with an eye site of Mt. Whitney 75 mile out, I hear hikers up there all the time. They hang out on Ch 3, 7 and 18 and obviously on HT’s. I also pick up traffic from hikers on the Pacific Crest Trail. I’m assuming they use some type of portable solar to keep their radios and cell phones charged.charged up.
  10. well.. some moderate success tonight. I heard a few more folks, one on a repeater and another on Simplex. However, I couldn't get a response when I asked for a signal check. I have my R and T DCS tones set, and I'm using channel mode (not VFO), but no responses. My daughter took one of the radios to another part of the house and we tried simplex, and that worked... I'll just keep trying the repeater over the next few days. Thanks for the help all.
  11. Someone should make a video on Youtube explaining how simple it is to do...
  12. Front page doesn't show it. You have to click on the linked license ID to get the address. So my bad.
  13. I'm sparse with my call sign only because I'm lazy. If I'm telling my wife "I'm on the way home" I might not even say it. But usually because I said it earlier when she called me to ask when I might be heading home. And most don't know how to look up a license ID to make it into an address. I think when you go to the FCC site it doesn't give out the address only the name. I know here the lookup tells you everything.
  14. 4 to 60 watts is nearly 11 dB. (4 to 40 is 10 dB).
  15. There are more important concerns with GMRS use.
  16. They have a mental/emotional defect that makes them crave power and control - often because in their life, they have none.
  17. It kind of seems to me like so many GMRS users are eager to police what other people do on the air. Why?
  18. It kind of seems to me like so many social GMRS users are eager to shout out their call signs on the air. Why? is it like a radio-cool thing? Or you just genuinely want to shout out your home address to goobers with mustard stains on their shorts? It’s also legal to run it off in fast CW and ASSUREDLY no GMRS users would know how to deal with it. Legal. Your license situation is between you and the FCC. You don’t need to share it with every mouth breather on the air…

If not friend, then why friend shaped? I think people underestimate moose, too. Saw a female moose and calf at a ski resort in Utah during the summer and the employees were trying to keep people far away from them. They are absolutely massive and have no problems stomping someone who gets too close.

  21. If you're keying in the frequency, then you're probably on a channel that has transmit disabled or in VFO mode where some radios also have transmit disabled. Kerchunk is the sound you hear from the repeater when you press and release the push-to-talk button.
  22. All valid reasons.
