  1. Past hour
  2. You can get them into cars, motorcycles, shooting sports, etc etc and they won't have money for anything else.
  3. I just uploaded 5 channels on different feq and DTSC codes when the unit is hooked up to the antenna can I use all of them or just 1 channel at a time? Thanks for putting up with me. The book dose not answer my question.
  4. Today
  5. Someone wiser than me once said, "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it." Get them interested in radios, and they'll never have enough money for drugs.
  6. Looking to install midland ghost antenna on c7 z06 corvette. If anyone has any tips to get the antenna in a good spot maybe near the halo or b pillar to keep it up high please chime in.
  7. You should get bank statements monthly. If you read those you should know of any "auto" payments. If you cancel something with an auto payment and get charged again, call your bank. it's an unauthorized debit and the bank will kill it and either reimburse it or claw it back. Companies with auto payments are required to notify you, using the contact info you supply, before withdrawals are made. Why pay for a "service" when all you need to do is read your bank statement?
  8. A couple of things about every forum I participated in. You have to have thick skin or your precious ego will be destroyed. Everyone has and is entitled to, even if they don't share mine and are wrong, opinions. And sweating the small stuff is not only fun but educational. Life is full of mystery and controversy. Embrace them.
  9. This is a topic you could search for hours on and not come up with a clearly definitive answer. In fact, there's almost no argument, even. The advantages and disadvantages of each are so minor people don't really seem to be all that passionate about it. CTCSS will behave with older equipment that doesn't support DCS. But who are we protecting? There aren't a lot of people operating 20 year old blister pack GMRS radios lacking DCS support on repeaters. Both are subaudable tones or sequences that have to be filtered out by the radio's high pass filter. Both have different reasons for behaving a little oddly at fringe-reception areas. DCS *may* take a little longer for the sequence to be transmitted completely enough for a radio to open squelch, but we're talking tenths of a second at most. CTCSS may be a little more crowded (you may have a slightly harder time finding a channel and tone pair that isn't in use). But the fact that we have both systems really is a product of the evolution of marketing bullet points from vendors. One or more vendors claimed they had a new and improved system, and they pushed it to the point that it gained adoption. But the fact that DCS and CTCSS have continued to co-exist for decades, filling the exact same purpose, without a clear winner pushing the other out of the way kind of indicates there's not a clear winner.
  10. CTCSS is older and more prone to spurious noise opening the squelch - weather or ambient. Additionally, there are relatively few usable tones. DCS is newer was was designed to address those shortcomings. Both came out of Motorola, who initially was one of the only manufacturers of radios with enough frequency stability to use DCS (though others caught up quickly). Even today, some Baofeng as they age have trouble with a DCS system. Also, many older radios can't use DCS at all, and a few transitional models needed modules to enable it (usually you'd swap our the CTCSS module to a dual mode module). So, yes, DCS is better, but CTCSS more compatible.
  11. I had (have) the same concerns as most in this thread ... this is what I have done ... may not be for everyone. As suggested above, I rented a POBox and changed my address with the FCC to that address. I found that shopping around for PO Boxes pays off. I went to https://www.usps.com/manage/po-boxes.htm and typed in just my zipcode where it asks for full address. It displayed all the Post offices in my area. My local post office wanted $60.00 for 3 mos or $20/mo (Extra Small box) But a smaller post office nearby (5 miles away) only wants $26 for 3 mos. or $8.67/mo. And if I bought 6 mos at once (which I did), the price dropped to $42.00 or $7.00/mo. Not bad. I do not, however, want to drive 5 miles every day just to check a probably empty mail box. (This is a secondary address and is only given to the FCC who almost never send me mail. Besides the FCC other hams may send me mail (e.g. QSL cards) but I am interested in those.) In any case, I signed up for Informed Delivery... a free service of the USPS (see https://www.usps.com/manage/informed-delivery.htm) which will send me photos of any mail that arrives, so I only make the trip to the Post Office when there actually IS mail. Finally, I registered my new address with DirectMail.com and DMAchoice.org to eliminate most junk mail. Works well... I recommend it.
  12. Thanks guys. My Repeater is coming today.
  13. i remember some 10 years ago subscribing to Norton Antivirus and having to close my bank account because them suckers kept charging for the service i canceled. Cancelling the card didn't work because Norton pays the banks for some stupid service that allows them to follow a customers account via Visa.
  14. Not familiar with that particular radio, but have you looked for an option in the menu labeled TXP? On my ar5rm its option 02 on the menu.
  15. GMRS etiquette - almost as prevalent as FCC enforcement!
  16. There’s a subscription service that allows you to manage all of your auto-subscriptions… See, this is why the USA is the greatest!
  17. Every 15 minutes and at the end of your conversation. As far as the other etiquette issues, pretty much what the previous replies have noted. As far as calling other users, Callsign or name or nickname, whatever gets their attention if they're listening. Some areas have active simplex and repeaters in use, but for the most part GMRS is a "bring your own" type of service. In my case it's my wife and son using it when up north away from cell phone service, around the large city lot at home and with a small number of friends near home we chat with occasionally. I rarely use repeaters. Have fun however you use it, and don't overthink it or take too much umbrage if some self appointed radio cop gives you grief if you do "something wrong."
  18. My personal guess would be DTCS since it's a series of digital numbers sent over the air. The attached paper describes in some detail how the system works. With tones it all depends on the quality of the TX and RX radios. A few have commented that radios with low levels of deviation have failed to access some repeaters. Also there are cases where ding-dongs using something like DMR, against the rules on GMRS, have caused false triggering of the CTCSS squelch function to turn off the audio mute. 19. Not even close. It requires a chamber and precision measuring and generating equipment to mimic the ground planes provided by the radio itself and the person holding the device.
  20. Doesn’t matter at all. Some people even mix them up.
  21. them damn 'auto subscribes' will get ya every time
  22. What is better to use DTCS or CT codes? On a repeater & radio.
  23. It's a tiny town near Smugglers Notch
  24. I come here for real info and rational topic-focused discussion. I do not come here for all the trash talk regardless of how witty someone may think their comments are. This topic isn't even about linking, let alone all the crazy stuff brought up. I've decided not to post whatever good info I may get unless there's some place I can put it where it won't get trashed by smart-elec comments.
  25. So why do you come here? I’ve noticed that a significant portion of your comments are actually about other people’s questions or comments and frequently negative, not actually contributing to the conversation.
  26. I find it amusing how topics get beat to death. It’s as if there is nothing else to do besides argue about stuff that doesn’t matter. Life is short and I don’t see the point, but hey….lets talk about linked repeaters again!
  27. Every day for 46 years and my love for her still takes my breath away. But what does that have to do with a GMRS forum where presumably people come to discuss GMRS? Did you come here expecting people not to discuss and even argue minutiae about GMRS?
