  1. Past hour
  2. LoL, exactly. Just like the panda and the hippo.
  3. Today
  4. Why do I catch this nonsense first thing in the morning and feel compelled to even bother to say something? First off WTF are you talking about? Are you referring to someone putting out there call sign on a repeater to see if others are also on the repeater? You answered that question in your own before anyone else ever could, THEY ARE BEING SOCIAL It's sort of HOW THEY CHOSE TO USE THE SERVICE. WTF do you care? You decided to post about it here so it must really effect you. Do you loose sleep at might over it? Does it plague your dreams? Is effecting your performance in the bedroom? The cure for any and all of that is tuning your radio to a channel without a repeater and turning off the scan function. Then you will NOT hear those pesky SOCIAL GMRS users calling out their ID's morning noon and night being social. And Randy, if you are looking for a topic for a video how about No being a TROLL
  5. I knew that when I wrote my response, I just didn't convey it correctly. In a rush while I was waiting for my last Physical Therapy session, I counted my multiplication factor of the 4 watts as the number of dBs with my fingers rather than the total dBs. That is what I get for rushing myself and using an android device.
  6. Having R-DCS set will block everything that isn’t transmitted with the same DCS code. Leaving R-DCS cleared out allows you to hear everything that is transmitted on that frequency. If you set T-DCS nobody will hear you except those who have a matching R-DCS or those who have no R-DCS. My recommendation for someone who isn’t hearing an expected response on a repeater is to leave the receive tone off but you must have the correct tone or code (remember there’s both CTCSS, which is a tone, and DTCSS, which is a digital code) when transmitting. You might also try getting closer to the repeater. Finally, not everyone using GMRS wants to respond to an unknown person on a repeater. Have your daughter take the other radio and walk a ways away and see if you can hear each other on the repeater.
  7. Overuse of call signs are the guys that set their auto CW's on their repeaters every 15 mins of the hour regardless of traffic. Especially the ones that have to announce the date, time, temp, and city.. Crazy as hell
  8. I have heard hikers on Pacific Crest Trail refer to the 'Rock House' several times.. Maybe one of the places they can charge..
  9. I was not able to hit the Bushnell repeater from the Beef's parking lot Friday night for what it's worth.
  10. Using it when you sign off is all that is required, I thought.
  11. Ya, 30' isn't all that high for an antenna. Mine is at 40' and I might get 5 miles in the right direction. Lots of hills and trees in my area though.

    Is GMRS what i need

Roughing it has gotten a lot easier. Reminds me of people claiming to go camping when they really me glamping.
  14. They have rest stops/charging stations along the trail, one at least.. I happened across one in the Holcomb Valley above Big Bear while off-roading a few months ago. primitive bathrooms, shower, and solar panels/batteries and hookups for charging.
  15. Yup, use to do that all the time, even analog cell freqs using field strength metters
  16. I think the only thing that matters using high power on an HT is it will drain your battery 5 times faster then low power.
  17. Surprisingly a lot of hikers use GMRS. Living here in the desert with an eye site of Mt. Whitney 75 mile out, I hear hikers up there all the time. They hang out on Ch 3, 7 and 18 and obviously on HT’s. I also pick up traffic from hikers on the Pacific Crest Trail. I’m assuming they use some type of portable solar to keep their radios and cell phones charged.charged up.
  18. well.. some moderate success tonight. I heard a few more folks, one on a repeater and another on Simplex. However, I couldn't get a response when I asked for a signal check. I have my R and T DCS tones set, and I'm using channel mode (not VFO), but no responses. My daughter took one of the radios to another part of the house and we tried simplex, and that worked... I'll just keep trying the repeater over the next few days. Thanks for the help all.
  19. Someone should make a video on Youtube explaining how simple it is to do...
  20. Front page doesn't show it. You have to click on the linked license ID to get the address. So my bad.
  21. I'm sparse with my call sign only because I'm lazy. If I'm telling my wife "I'm on the way home" I might not even say it. But usually because I said it earlier when she called me to ask when I might be heading home. And most don't know how to look up a license ID to make it into an address. I think when you go to the FCC site it doesn't give out the address only the name. I know here the lookup tells you everything.
  22. 11.76dB 4w > 60w
  23. 4 to 60 watts is nearly 11 dB. (4 to 40 is 10 dB).
