  1. Past hour
  2. Yes. All the regs that refer to what is required for certification (bandwidth, deviation etc). (Assuming of course that no radio nuts are building their own GMRS radios.) Although it's the manufacturer that controls that, vendors have to sell radios that meet U.S. requirements. Enforcement against Baofeng radios targeted vendors or importers. Our responsibility is to just use certified radios and not modify them in a way that breaks the rules so we don't negate the certification .
  3. I went ahead and set up a PayPal account linked to my Debit Card so that should be fine for payment. I had PayPal years ago(mainly for EBay buying and selling) then they got hacked and they were doing some shady stuff so I deleted my account. I guess I'm stuck with another PayPal account now, LOL.
  4. You’ll do great! Often companies use PayPal just to process credit cards so you wouldn’t necessarily need your own PayPal account. Best wishes!! I am eager to learn that you did great!
  5. You need 26 out of 35 to pass. I've been getting anywhere from 32 to 35 on my practice tests. Lord Willing I should pass just fine. I just need to make sure of the payment method since I don't have PayPal. I registered with N1UVO for a 2pm session. The email said they take PayPal but the website said they'd also do Zelle. I hope so.
  6. Really? What percentage of GMRS users who go H.A.M. eventually drop it and stick with GMRS, in your estimation? I'm tempted to get a DMR radio just for RX. As my primary interest is the SHTF scenarios common here in Hurricane Central, the more info that can be gathered the better. I can see getting updates from HAMS and relaying the info to the neighborhood via GMRS. What's the passing grade for a Tech license? I once took one of those mini tests on-the-fly and did rather well, but I don't recall the score.
  7. Today
  8. That reminds me of the weird kid across the street when I was growing up used to brag to me about how he just got some new crystals for his radio.
  9. Right, that's why experienced input and research is important so there are no unintentional consequences.
  10. I'm old enough to remember when this thread was about pre-programmed frequencies and settings.
  11. Are there any regulations regarding distribution and sale? I don’t know of any. If I’m correct, that would mean an addition of regulations. A person should never request more regulation.
  12. The lead VE will be the one to set the camera placements. I've never done a remote test but I've done about 50 in-person exams. l
  13. Ok, more good points. It's not just because of the radio for me. They are cheap enough to buy the right one. It's more of a quest, in what appears to be a rare opportunity, to give the gov't ideas on deregulation. I feel the need to be part of it. I don't know if you saw the above conversation I had with UncleYoda, but his thought for the radio cert is "to enforce the distribution and sale aspect" which if true, is a problem that should be addressed.
  14. I pulled out my old Logitech USB camera to use with the one on my AIO ThinkCenter. I also took all the papers off of any desk near my desk.
  15. Here’s one place that conducts online ham exams: https://wm7x.net
  16. Just remember that you will need 2 (two) cameras to take a remote test. One on you and the other on the work area to ensure you are not getting help from some place.
  17. For everyone whom you authorize to use your GMRS radio? Remember, your GMRS radio may be used by every one of your direct relatives and some in-laws. If what you really want is to be able to use the same radio for GMRS and ham radio, get rid of the rules that prohibit certifying a radio for GMRS if it can be used on the ham bands.
  18. This is a good point, but are they not already certifying the user by making one read/understand government code? Maybe a better user certification process would be in order?
  19. I was adapting an oldie, but a goodie!
  20. I just couldn’t help thinking of this commercial from back in the day…
  21. Main reason is to use DMR(as stated in the original post) and a 2nd reason is to open up more frequency options to use. 2M, 1.25M and 70cm go unused on my radios. When I pass the Tech Test I can use those and any repeaters in the area set up for HAM bands.
  22. Unless you have a strong urge to talk to anonymous gents and that fits your wants and desires, you will find that need for the Ham world will fade after a few months and you will make GMRS your routine go-to radio comm and you will put the Ham stuff in the past. I'll bet you a dollar and a donut that will happen. That has happen to a lot of GMRS Radio Dorks.
  23. When I put my radio in the MW it comes out with a higher wattage. Transferal from the 1200 I guess...
  24. I once told a group of buddies that Moses was a conservative. One asked how would I know that. I replied if he was a liberal he would have called them “The 10 Suggestions.”
  25. So the Examiner will file FCC Form 605 for me(I guess I fill in the info before I take the test?) so all I'll need to do is log into my FCC Account and pay the $35 for the license. That's a bit different than getting the GMRS license was. Thanks.
  26. You either certify the equipment or the users. The reason why nearly every service requires certified transmitters is so typical users don’t have to have expertise in all of the requirements. It’s a service for users, not people who have to prove some level of expertise.
  27. My old microwave in my kitchen is 1200 watts, capable of a really nasty burn
