I wrote "may" propagate further and if it doesn't so what. What I was conveying is that with FM modulation I was able to communicate further than I could with AM modulation.

@OffRoaderX I doubt it's going to happen, too. But, I do still support it. -

OK. I got some 16mm self-tapping screws from Amazon. On the left is a 11mm screw from the KG 1000G and on the right is a 16mm screw from Amazon. Same thread pattern. self tapping screws.tif

In my entire life, on any frequency, that has absolutely never been the case. From a scientific standpoint, it also doesn't make sense. The signal can travel the same distance, but you need more receive sensitivity (less noise) in order for the demodulator to extract the audio from the signal, compared to AM only needing peak amplitude above the noise floor.
-
What would allow an RF signal travel further if it’s AM rather than FM?

Ham Radio 2.0 Coverage of Low-band Channels for GMRS
marcspaz replied to marcspaz's topic in General Discussion
The point is to expand beyond short-range local comms, particularly for emergencies. 300w repeater systems would definitely help a lot in areas like what we are in here in the DC Metro area, the northern Mid-Atlantic and northeastern US. There was one 10m repeater that was at 100w that covered a huge amount of the area, but it's been off the air for years and GMRS isn't getting the job done for many families and EMCOMM volunteers. I support it and comfortably put it in the category of you don't have to use it if you don't want to. It certainly doesn't hurt anyone or the service to provide extra frequencies. Shoot... the biggest complaint I see/hear is that there are so few channels and the space is crowded in metro areas. Why not support it if it will reallocate unused frequencies and give users more options? (That was rhetorical, of course) -
Ham Radio 2.0 Coverage of Low-band Channels for GMRS
WRYZ926 replied to marcspaz's topic in General Discussion
Plus the fact that 46 or 49 MHz won't do any better than the 6m band currently does. I know because I have used 30-70 MHz all over the world while in the military. Most of the time we had to have some sort of relay station setup to get any kind of useful range. -

Not needed for a personal radio service intended for local ccommunications -
The AM signal may propagate further, but it will be noisier and not usable whereas, the FM audio will not be affected by the noise factor as AM thus you will more farz with intelligible audio.

As some of you know, my friend Mike submitted a petition for rule making to the FCC to expand GMRS into some low-band frequencies. Ham Radio 2.0 covered an article about it and does a good job explaining the basics...

We're always looking for ways to make connecting with each other easier and more efficient. (Hell, that's kinda the nexus of radio communication, right?) On this week's Brentwood 600 check-in net, we announced two new web addresses that you can type into any browser, save in your bookmarks, or -- most importantly -- verbally give out to your friends who'd like to connect with and join this club. Either web address will take you directly to the club page. Why two addresses? Because some people remember shorthand and abbreviations better and other people recall descriptive words instead. So simply type in SCTNGMRS.com or SouthCentralTNGMRS.com into any browser to be brought back here to the club page. (capitalization are not necessary). Pretty nifty eh. Pass it along to your friends. Let's take this group to the next level.

High SWR on roof installed 3/8 through hole NMO mount
WRUE951 replied to WSJK800's question in Technical Discussion
well, assuming your magnet mount used as a reference is using a different cable. I would start looking at the cable or connectors. And try moving your ghost antenna to the mag mount and check that. If you see the same poor SWR than the antenna is suspect.. Process of elimination is the game. Try reading in one set of circumstsnces than anoter as i suggested. It's not always easy to chase poor swr problems.. -

High SWR on roof installed 3/8 through hole NMO mount
WSJK800 posted a question in Technical Discussion
Hello, I recently installed my new GMRS radio and getting high 3 to 3+ SWR readings using the Midland Ghost and the Midland 32" whip antenna in an open area. When I connect the magnet antenna that came with the radio, I have a 1.3 SWR. The NMO mount is 3/8 through hole and mounted in the center of my Tacoma roof. The radio is powered direct to battery both positive and negative. The base of the NMO mount has ground continuity with the outside threads of the PL-259 female on the radio. The mount has good continuity with the shield/outside and center conductor on the PL-259 at the end of the cable with no shorts. I do get a short between shield and center conductor when I screw on either antenna. I'm thinking maybe the coax was compromised somehow during installation and I'm facing pulling the headliner down again and installing a new mount. I'm in San Diego if anyone works on these things and would be happy to pay a professional to get it right. Any advice would be appreciated. Here's my setup: Arcadian MABVT8U: 3/8 Thru-Hole NMO Mount with 17 Ft. RG-58/U Cable MicroMobile® Ghost 3dB Gain NMO Antenna - MXTA25 MicroMobile® Whip 6dB Gain NMO Antenna - MXTA26 MXT575 MicroMobile® GMRS 50-Watt Two-Way Radio - MXT575 -
(bluetooth) OD Master can't do a firmware update as far as I know. You need to be physically plugged in to do and update using the IAP software. The CPS software easily took off the stun/kill on mine. Not even a little struggle.

So, if I can pry, @Jaay, what didn't you like about your h8? What do you like about your wouxon that the h8 failed you on? My new replaced h3 locked up on me yesterday as i had to keep it in my pocket as the belt clips suck period and I'm tired of it falling to the floor/ground with every movement. Couldn't find any help to unlock the kill lock with one unit only. So I hooked it up to my Odmaster online and it downloaded the new firmware without my acknowledgement and ruined this radio, like the firmware did to my original unit.. So now, even tho the radio is locked with s kill lock and no number for it in the manual, it is locked and with the new firmware installed, which locks the radio in transmit mode and won't stop unless you turn it off. I liked the conveniences of the small unit with both ham and gmrs. But now I am seeing more for sale and tested on youtube and they all look like they are manufactured in the same plant and just put different names on them. So, I am interested in hearing your thoughts on your h8 as that was going to be my next replacement, moving up to 10 watts as I can't reach the local repeaters where I am in missouri, south of st. louis. Have a great Thursday and thanks again for responding to my post.. Crazy WSDX855 To the others, I couldn't get od master to fully load up on the screen it was all grayed out, but it did upgrade the firmware which doesn't like older version radios. so now I am just waiting for the guys in china to get back to me today.. They do respond quickly, that I will say..

We can't be wasting perfectly good coffee around here!!!!!! I know I can't afford to waste coffee as I suffer from having too much blood in my caffeine system for the first couple of hours each day.

I have one and it WILL do 33cm/900MHz, trust me. You set it to "Super Mode" and you can do from 18MHz to 999MHz. It only says "Dual Band" on the web site but it'll do 10M, 6M, 2M, 1.25M, 70cm, 33cm, CB FM, MURS and GMRS and alot of other Frequencies in between.

Kill and Stun are off in OD Master too. Interesting......
-
Just looked. Kill and Stun are turned off in the CPS, not sure about the OD Master.
-
Weird. Turned on the H3 and it was in Stun/Kill mode, no access. Thought I'd have to talk with Luxi again. Turns out if you use the USB port and their CPS you just reprogram the radio and you're all set. I have lots of AM stations in my radio for the airport and the CPS won't program those. But I also use OD Master and it has all those programmed in it so just re-reprogrammed it and it's all back to normal. Took about 1 minute. No idea what set off the kill mode though.
