Weather Radio
Elkhunter521 and 2 others reacted to coryb27 for a question
Not this Corey! Now that you have my attention you will get my Opinion. WX over GMRS, annoying to say the least. We have a garage repeater in my area that tells as the time, date, humidity, temp, ID and website every 30 min. As soon as a SAME WX alert comes thru it breaks in with the NWS for 2 full rotations of the message. To make matters worse it adds it to the end of the gibberish info it sends out every 30 min. Under a SAME alert this thing will spit out 5 min of worthless channel blocking information to nobody every 30 min. During this time the repeater is rendered useless and could hinder real emergency communications. In my opinion this is not what GMRS is intended for, if you have a need to monitor a WX radio buy a weather radio and leave GMRS out of it. Last thing we need on our very limited amount of spectrum is GMRS repeaters broadcasting something that is already broadcast to most of our population.3 points -
Ok, after a little bit of playing with the FPP, I figured it out. First you need to follow all the steps to enable FPP, this includes remove a resister and enabling FPP through the software. to enter FPP, press and hold "D" while the radio boots up, you should see "Self Prog" Press Mon, then you can select the group/channel you wish to program (I believe D switches between channel and group) Press B and it will let you scroll through the band. Pressing A switches your step size for faster scrolling Enter your RX frequency Press B and youll get RSX ----- This is where you put your tone info in. Pressing MON or SCAN switches between CTCSS and DCS, the right hand up and down arrows should change the tone number. Press B and you have your TX frequency, enter that in and press B TSX is your input code, enter the same way you did RSX and press B Few more options pressing B to accept till it gets back to the group/channel screen and your all done.1 point

Weather Radio
Elkhunter521 reacted to berkinet for a question
Well, that is not at all what I understood. I think he wanted to set his NOAA radio in front of a GMRS radio so that whenever the weather radio was on, it would operate the GMRS radio by VOX. He rationalized that any weather announcement was of “life or death” significance. That is not true. Also, note the NOAA service broadcasts weather announcements as well as warnings, there is no selectivity. This plan is a clear violation of the no broadcasting provision in Part 95E.1 point -
You are asking the same question that this entire topic is about, I have also provided an answer to your question and here it is again. Echolink is HAM, this is GMRS. Most of the HAM linking systems are based on Asterisk using the Allstar network. Asterisk is the same system that is being used to link GMRS repeaters using the network here at MyGMRS or one of the other GMRS networks that has been set up. Some allow simplex nodes some don't. The MyGMRS network is repeaters as they are more useful. I would suggest you go back an read whats already been posted as your question has been answered already. As well this forum has a topic dedicated to just this... Below is the link you could have found by reading my other post or simply using the forums search box at the top of the page. I don't mind helping or answering anybody's questions so long as you first attempt to find the information on your own. Answering the same questions over and over because people don't want to take the time to look is annoying and a big turnoff. https://forums.mygmrs.com/topic/295-repeater-linking-discussion/1 point

Note the original post was about retransmitting NOAA weather broadcasts. Unless there was a means to determine which broadcasts fell into the "serious life and property threatening" category, blanket repeats of such broadcasts would not be legal. If you limit the retransmissions to only EAS (Emergency Alert System) and then only retransmitted messages that pertained to the coverage area of the repeater, you might have a case. Honestly however, there are already plenty of systems for relaying and receiving EAS messages and I am not sure what the benefit would be for adding a GMRS relay channel. Yes, it might be useful for those who monitor a given GMRS frequency (simplex or repeater) 24 hours a day. If I lived in an area that is likely to have messages meeting the criteria of immediacy, I would probably sign up for a public alert service like NIXLE.1 point -
I don't think linking GMRS repeaters is trying to make GMRS something it is not and will never be. We have been linking machines for a few years now and its been great. It has expanded the area of coverage from 30 miles to 3 states with the ability to connect to several other states. If you have friends and family in a different city or state you could still enjoy using GMRS with them by simply linking a repeater in each area together. The owner of this site has a nice system in place, check this out https://link.mygmrs.com/map1 point

#1. You cannot retransmit or relay signals from another service, except in case of an actual current emergency. #2. The emergency must pose immediate severe threat to life or property.. Very few weather warnings would meet the standard. And, for those, there are other, better, alert systems already in place.1 point -
POTS = phone patch. not legal radio tie line (RTL) or leased lines. 2wire or 4 wire direct link from radio to a console. sometimes referred to as remote base legal1 point

Funny no matter what Forum linking comes up in it always starts a POTS debate, one that's been beat to death. Nothing I do is over POTS, in fact the Asterisk server is sitting on optical fiber and the nodes on dedicated point to point connections or cable. As an IT professional of 25 years I can assure you DSL is not POTS. Unless you are doing an auto patch to a POTS line or using dial up for your internet chances are your internet has been been off the last mile for years.1 point

Can GMRS repeaters be linked to the web like Echo Link for hams?
kipandlee reacted to Elkhunter521 for a question
Hi all, Maybe im stupid, Ive been told that before, but I don't see a problem. GMRS is a radio service for people that want a family or a friendly radio service. People that just want to pick up a mike and talk. Why does everyone want to make this into something it is not and never will be. If you need something more than what it is, get an amature license. I dont have an amature license and Im happy with it. Wow, you got me ranting. SORRY.1 point -

newbie Midland MXT275 antenna placement question
Logan5 reacted to PastorGary for a question
Is there room on the tire carrier to mount a pipe flange for 1/2 inch water pipe? Once mounted, an appropriate length of 1/2 inch galvanized water pipe then becomes a mini-mast. At the top of the mast, you can adapt to just about any type of antenna and mount.1 point -
Stand-offs are easy. Go get a stick or two of unistrut from the local hardware store, some conduit (whatever you may need for antennas to clamp to) and the appropriate unistrut clamps (for clamping to the tower face). And if you need to side mount a DB antenna then you just use the appropriate strut clamp to clamp the antenna directly to the unistrut (both top and bottom if necessary) Works like a charm.1 point
