Can you provide a citation for "$10,000 fine"? Going 5 over the speed limit is illegal. However, you don't go to prison for 15 years on your first offense. Just because something is illegal, doesn't mean it's a severe felony. The FCC's actions towards individuals who improperly use radios are all public and there is not a single example of a person being fined for using a ham radio to transmit on GMRS in a manner that would otherwise be legal. Sure; just like the cop who dings you for the lanyard over the rear view mirror 'obstructing your vision' when they stop you for speeding; there are examples of people who were also doing other illegal things being dinged, yes. And the FCC is definitely going after / cracking down on vendors and manufacturers who sell radios capable of both. But no; it is not a priority for the FCC to aggressively prosecute people who use the GMRS service with a ham radio or vice versa, who are otherwise licensed to do so, and who are doing so in a manner that is otherwise legal (non-disruptive, not causing interference, transmitting at appropriate frequencies and powers, etc.) I use two radios myself; mostly just because I want the performance of a proper GMRS antenna and the easiest way for my smooth brain to figure out how to do that was two antennas and two radios in my truck. There's probably a way to get my ham radio to transmit over GMRS; I dunno. Haven't figured it out if there is. And generally speaking, I prefer to follow the rules and I'm pretty by the book. But there is this bizarre internet disconnect happening where folks thing that something that violates a regulatory bodies statute is the same thing as a felony; or would ever warrant a $10,000 fine. People get fined by the FCC when they intentionally cause problems, or when they use their equipment to deny other people the right to use their equipment (such as jammers, something the FCC really does go after hardcore).

    Repeater number 3

Will be cabling up and putting repeater number 3 at the site. This is Johnstown 625. This repeater will be connected to the MidWest GMRS wide area radio network at all times. We do have the Johnstown 675 and 725 on the air as well for local traffic. If you are in this area and want to experience a wide area connected system, this is your chance. Please realize this repeater will ALWAYS be connected to the wide area network. So if you are just wanting to talk across town, please use the 675 repeater for those communications.

  4. Your are the man... I only have one and love the KG-935G (can monitor my Ham channels not TX) and one sister radio KG-UV8H for my Ham side of life (I my Ham ticket and can monitor GMRS as well (not TX on GMRS). They both are same beefiness and interchange battery and accessories. B2WR did it right and great customer service which I only used once. Enjoy your 935G...

  6. What exactly is a "BIG" repeater? I am curious. Why would Oil and Gas be using GMRS when they are obviously a business, and would benefit from more exclusive system/frequency assignments and technology modes? You can use that CB whip... have fun. If you have never used a "wimpy" 6 inch whip (1/4 wave) UHF antenna and seen that the results are very good, not to mention they solve alot of installation problems I suggest a try. Everyone wants to run to bigger-better theory which is a bit off for radio. Gain antennae are a crutch. The standard 1/4 wave is a good antenna. That 102 is a 1/4 for CB....that's why it worked so well for it.

  7. Radio as a service is a thing now, and the firmware SUM scam is just another way to keep milking the cow... and for that seems that older radios might increase in resale value, due to being considered "unlocked" as most users don't have to deal with incompatible radios, or potentially bricked radios down the road, etc. Multiple CPS files/profiles is an absolute PITA... Also, its not like good radios from 20-30 years ago (like the HT1250, etc) are obsolete anyways. Sure, those don't do digital, but then again some users abhor digital modes... and those radios are known to work reliably without dialing home and none of the "milk the cow SUM/RAAS racket..." G.

Why do you think you have them programed correctly? Have you actually made contact with the repeaters and if so, what is your indication(s) that you have opened the repeater? Did you contact the repeater operator thru a conversation on the repeater, email or text messages? How do you know for certain the repeaters are online and operating? I'm not banging you here, I wheel a lot too by myself and even did the Trans American Trail by myself. An Inreach or Spot with some helicopter/medivac insurance would be a good investment.

Sorry to sound negative but if your doing solo wheeling and out of cellular range there is no way you should rely on the GMRS repeaters unless you know and use them often. Buy a spot or an Inreach to be safe. GMRS is not for hailing emergencies for the most part. While I know of places than monitor certain channels I'd be careful thinking thats your safety net.

  10. What he said ^^^^^. I've always thought that the two most important part of any base station is the "goesinta" and the "comesoutta", i.e. the power supply and the antenna system. A good power supply should easily outlast one's lifespan. I've never regretted investing in my Yaesu FP-1030A. I've used it continuously for just over 30 years now without any issues.
