    Cool old GMRS base

It was narrowband only. My parents had the FRS-1000 unit which was basically the same but with the 14 FRS frequencies and no removeable antenna. Sadly they left it mounted in a 5th wheel they had when they bought a new one. Both did what they were intended to do. We would use them to talk from camper to camper, camper to hand held and use weather alerts. That was the case use so they were ideal. Never had to search for a handheld or find batteries when it was dead. Unit just sat there working. At the time we were running Uniden GMRS mobiles in the driving area/truck and rarely had issues talking to each other via Uniden and this box.

    Cool old GMRS base

In the middle of unpacking and found my old GMRS base from my motorhome. We had it mounted in our 5th wheel with a 1/4 wave UHF whip on the roof. When we got the Motorhome I had it on a try band larsen that I would use for the scanner when needed also. Cool part was it would run off the DC power pack if we had power, a 12V cord or batteries. I ran rechargeable in it and when at NASCAR races it would charge all day on solar or generator then run all night on battery. It went off multiple times while in Charlotte one year when the track got warned for a tornado. Had it go off for other severe weather events at other tracks and campgrounds over the years. The antenna was a BNC so you could use the one on it or the mounted antenna. Definitely a cool box for the day. Maybe some day I'll use it again.

    Cool old GMRS base

Brings back some memories, had a few of these myself. As well as the Uniden handhelds. I found out that the base station units had been donated away, as the wife thought they were old cordless phone bases. But, still have many of the simple Uniden handheld radios. Two digit display and rubberized case that was larger than comparable TalkAbout series Motorola radios at the time, meant easier to hold. When used with these Audiovox base units, spread across the farm, they worked great for a couple of miles, or until the Uniden batteries got low. Base to base was great though, and they were left on all the time between outbuildings and sheds. Wish these were still available, or something like them. AC powered, big buttons, and decent size display. Was easy to teach others that they were a "wireless intercom" rather than a "radio" at times.

  6. I ended up with a GM-30 as part of a package deal with a mobile VHF/UHF radio, and am actually pretty amazed at the abuse it will take. I am in the Pacific Northwest and have had that GM-30 get rain and moisture all over it, and it has held up well. The case has taken a few knocks too. I bet yours does just as well, and having a radio is the first step in using radios (hobby or pro). There are many I know that get a license and then never get a radio, they just wanted the piece of paper to put on the wall.

  7. Oh, these radios do not use K-Type connectors, they must have the so-called "waterproof" connectors. So disregard my post above! Good price, so long as it works and you can easily install the proper driver.

  9. WELCOME! I do not have the UV-9G or the GMRS 9R but the $22 cable I purchased on Amazon for my original UV-5Rs has worked with every K-type HT that I own that allows for programming. Don't try to save money with cheap cables, as there are many counterfeits out there than have driver problems when installing on your computer. K-Type is the two prong audio cable that an external microphone uses to connect to our HTs and comes from Kenwood's original use of this type plug with their HTs for the last 30 years. Try it; you cannot harm the HT as long as it is K-type; and be sure to push it in ALL the way and turn the volume up to about 2/3rds.

  10. Hi also a new guy on the block have two Wouxun KG935G and two Wouxun KG 805G I have not yet tried to program them for the repeaters that I have found near me and I also do not have a computer but see that the 935G have all 8 repeater channels and that you only need to go in and select the repeater channel that matches up with one of the already loaded repeater channels and set radio in frequency mode select repeater channel then go to the repeater function and turn it on so I think even can handle that LOL. SO Hi and I hope to pick up some new ideas and friends along the way

  11. I've been trying to figure out if this rig has the "secret" ability to tell us what CTCSS or DCS tones are on a received signal. Have you figured this one out?

    NYC Repeaters

Joe, No repeater is ever safe open or closed. Scanners today can find PL tones on any frequency. So if someone wants to be an ass they’re gonna be. Even so, some radios are very easy to program and if someone really wants they can just key up every PL tone till they find the right one. Unfortunately there’s some nasty low life people that have nothing better to do but to cause interference on what ever tickles their fancy. Even on police, fire and rescue this happens. It’s those people who ruin it for everyone even scanner enthusiasts because a lot of jurisdictions are going digital and encrypted.
