the weather channel, sorry I like a bad pun... Hi Robert, I am still new at this myself but as I understand it while there is nothing official the folks using them for offroad situations typically use 16 (4X4 equals...) and for the road (travel) people use 19, though there are those that use 20 and you can find out all about the debate by just serching "travel channel" here. I personally just let the radio scan on one level while monitoring the local repeater channel on another.

  2. Except that the RT81V isn't accepted/type certified for MURS. If it was, it would have a fixed antenna, max 2 watts and just 5 frequencies. Thus, the bend. In reality, the MURS world is a free for all with all types of 4 watt portables being programmed up on those channels as simplex users. I see that with the FRS channels in UHF also.

  3. Do you want our blessing using a business radio in digital mode on MURS without a business license (not that a license matters in that situation)?!? I could bring my Radioddity RD-5R to Albuquerque and join you! ?

  4. MURS does not have the "fixed antenna" restriction.

  7. Ditto don't think there are gain settings. Guess the closest you will get is to adjustments is how far is the mic from your mouth. Could shove cotton in the mic hole to lower modulation or drill the hole to increase modulation. I prefer just moving the mic.

  8. Go drive over to your local Walmart parking lot and you will hear them; I think it is MURS 4 or 5.

  9. Did it myself (the war driving) between 2000 and 2005 with Toshiba Libretto 100CT, and later with HP Jornada 720, both running linux with kismet. This reddit post is a blast from the past. Libretto is now in big trash can of history, but I still keep that Jornada, for I don't know what. Maybe because I contributed to jlime and openpsion projects.

  10. Its a nifty little radio, but unless everyone else in your party also has one, most of that nifty'ness doesnt matter. As for basic use and fars, it's pretty much the same as any other radio.

  11. I heard a rumor that the YouTube GMRS Queen will be making a video about this radio very soon.

  12. Yep, for LMR we use only the three letter acronym security, but even Basic Privacy on most Motorola XPR radios will thwart all CCRs and scanners. DTR radios will also stop guys like Lscott in their tracks... LOLOL G.
