Unable to open RT97 Software Program?
WRXB215 and 2 others reacted to OffRoaderX for a question
I have it running fine on both Windows 10 and 11.. Try Uninstalling, then install again, but when you run the installer program, run it "As Administrator" (Google it if you have to).. then, after reinstalling, also run the program "As Administrator".3 points -

I took the screws out of the plug end and separated the assembly enough to see the wire colors and what I got was inconclusive because it looks like there are two whites. Those may have stripes but I just couldn't see. Anyway: 1 - White 2 - Red 3 - Blue 4 - Green 5 - White * 6 - Yellow 7 - Couldn't see the insulation 8 (Center pin) - Couldn't see the color * Could see white but couldn't tell if there was a stripe3 points -
Can you legally integrate/pratice using codes into your Emercency Plan for coms?
Over2U and one other reacted to SteveShannon for a topic
People are quick to say “in an emergency” as if that excuses all sorts of non-compliance, but the truth is that non-compliance during an actual emergency is more likely to be detrimental to those who need effective communications. A recent example was the jerk who interfered with fire-fighting crews by getting on the radio and trying to redirect their efforts to what he considered an emergency. The regulations do allow certain behaviors in an emergency but you must read the actual language of those exceptions. None of them amount to “anything goes.” But you are correct that the FCC might not even investigate unless a complaint is made.2 points -
The eight current GMRS channels can handle eight simultaneous conversations today (in the same area). The proposal below would allow for 32 simultaneous conversations without expanding the GMRS service. For those not familiar with DMR technology, each DMR repeater signal has two "timeslots" which allows for two independent talk channels. Two DMR signals can fit within the same space as one analog FM signal today. This is possible because a DMR signal only requires about 7.6 kHz of spectrum, while todays wideband analog signals need 20 kHz of spectrum. Thus, four conversations can be supported within each of the current GMRS channels. The center frequency of each DMR repeater (and the radios it supports) would be programmed 5 kHz above or below the current center channel. +/-12.5 kHz might also be used. Below shows how this would work in reality. The FCC would not need to allocate new radio spectrum. They only have to allow more efficient use of what we already have. The other benefit of DMR is that two different repeater groups could invest in one DMR repeater, which splits the cost in two while each maintains their own "channel". As a DMR repeater takes the same rack space as an analog repeater and only requires one antenna, the repeater site lease costs could be split between the two groups as well. It would take the FCC some time to accomplish this, so if they started now, they might be able to complete this rule change in 2024.1 point

Using code words or phrases in normal conversations would be against the regulations as has been clearly stated. However, in an actual emergency you can pretty much throw the regulations in the trash. The key point being the FCC, should they investigate, would have to agree the situation did rise to the level of a true emergency and agree the use was justified.1 point

This is a interesting paper. Particularly for our current conversation: "...First let us look at the currently authorized emissions for GMRS. Looking in 47 CFR Subpart E 95.1771 we find some surprising, authorized voice emission modes, A3E, H3E, J3E and R3E. All of these are several types of voice amplitude modulation, Single/Double Sideband with suppressed or reduced carrier etc. None of these official modes are compatible with the FM mode! Why isn’t the FCC worried about interoperability between FM and these modes?..." Was this ever submitted to anyone at the FCC (officially or otherwise?)1 point

This is the only case I see as a way to do this if it’s done. I don’t have any concerns with how existing analog affects digital. I’m concerned with the idea digital affecting existing analog and I don’t think CTCSS is a reasonable solution. That’s like building a stadium next door and telling people if they don’t like the lights at night they should build a bigger fence (sorry about not being able to see out of your windows). You mention the the rule change FRS/GMRS. I don’t think GMRS was a problem with new FRS/GMRS radio back when this happened it was the new radios impacting the existing GMRS. Have we learned nothing from this blunder? I do appreciate the exchange of ideas discussed here. I think if this were to happen it needs to be solution that works for everyone.1 point

I wouldn’t say that, you definitely added to the ball moving in the right direction, I couldn’t find anything on this at all. Your info with Steve’s eye for detail could be a win for OP?1 point

Yeah, I'm pretty much a moron as I didn't look at the picture. #5 is the grey wire and it looks like #7 is the non insulated wire. I can't see the black wire so I could, but won't, assume where it goes. I tried to get a picture but it didn't help. OP, please let us know when you have the answer.1 point -
This discussion needs to end because the answer is not digital or cutting a high level repeater down to 25 watts. If you want more frequencies or digital modes go to amateur radio and leave gmrs as it is. What does need to happen is more education as people need to understand that gmrs is not the same as a cellphone so you shouldn't use it like one and talk for hours. Not necessarily. The key is how it’s done and what digital mode. While I like DMR I don’t think it’s a good candidate to use on GMRS. I believe there are a couple of better choices. As a few other posts have pointed out the principle issues are the existing base of analog radios and just where do you locate the digital channels where they would result in the least interference to analog operations.1 point

Here’s what the regulations say: § 95.1733 Prohibited GMRS uses. (a) In addition to the prohibited uses outlined in § 95.333 of this chapter, GMRS stations must not communicate: (1) Messages in connection with any activity which is against Federal, State, or local law; (2) False or deceptive messages; (3) Coded messages or messages with hidden meanings (“10 codes” are permissible);1 point -
One other point. Just how many people check to see if they can reliably communicate using simplex? If they can then they should stay off the repeater, use simplex, and let those who REALLY need it the access.1 point

Are you thinking we want to implement DMR because we want to use digital? The San Francisco/Sacramento region is heavily congested and interference among repeaters is increasing. There is no practical solution using the same amount of spectrum unless you move to digital technologies. You are also trying to compare apples to oranges. GMRS is a more attractive solution to the majority of people because their priority is communication as opposed to technical pursuits. Here in California, CERT, neighborhood or fire watch, militia groups, etc. have implemented GMRS because 80-90% of their members have no direct interest in the technical aspects of amateur radio.1 point

I'm just wondering... And anyone feel free to chime in here. Who, exactly, is monitoring my GMRS communications for hidden meanings, and more importantly, am I going to get busted for asking my wife to "Rendezvous at Location Sierra Bravo" instead of saying "Meet me at Sonic Burger"?1 point

I would add you have a cell phone. It’s okay to use your cell phone. I mean seriously if you want a private conversation radio isn’t it. Sure there’s encrypted radios but that’s not GMRS. Op is looking for a solution where there is no problem. I’m 10-98 ?1 point

You've come across archaic sections of the FCC rules. Imagine someone telling you that you can't say, "Meet you at the rendezvous, over." vs explicitly saying where and what you are doing. You have a brain. Its okay to use your brain. Its okay to think and reason. You are better, and always will be than ChatGPT and its endless database entries of biased entries.1 point
