  1. I'm a big proponent of CCRs. And in most everyday usage by normal people, you will not see a difference. That being said, there are times when there is a difference. In a side-by-side comparison between my Kenwood TH-75A and my Baofeng UV-5R, the sound quality difference is quite noticeable. The Kenwood sounds much better. Selectivity is another place where the pricy radios shine. @OffRoaderX had a situation not long ago where his expensive Motorola was filtering out some RFI that his cheaper radio was not. There is definitely a difference in design between CCRs and more expensive radios. The schematic for my UV-5R is one page, the schematic for my TH-75A is four pages. That is where the price and quality difference is seen on paper. So, in practice you will likely never notice a difference, but in some cases there certainly is a difference. All in all, I still use my CCRs almost exclusively.
  2. You may have to use the CPS or CHIRP to fix it. Otherwise, you may need to send it back for a replacement.
  3. @WSFG668 You probably will not be able to program that frequency into any of the simplex or repeater channels. If your radio has what is often called "DIY" channels, that is where you would program frequencies like that.
  4. If you, or your friend were at the same altitude as the repeater antenna, there is a chance you could talk simplex. Trees could still be a problem but height is the primary variable.
  5. If the tones are listed publicly, it's probably "open" but if they are not, you should ask for permission from the owner. If the owner grants permission, he will send the tones.
  6. It would be quite interesting to see a map of all the abandoned repeaters around the country.
  7. Yep, it's sad that you have to do things like this sometimes. You shouldn't have to find a way around it. I think some of the manufacturers misinterpret the regulations. Any GMRS radio should be able to have multiple repeaters programed in with the same frequency but different tones so that as you travel, you just switch to the one you are near.
  8. @alexwade This is a 5 year old thread, you may not get an answer.
  9. You can fix this problem, just keep it hush hush when you do.
  10. @WRHS218 If you can set duplex to off from the key pad, that will do the trick.
  11. And then lick the residue off the wire.
  12. I talked from Houston to Beaumont one morning on 2M. So far that has been my longest on 2M.
  13. Also for side-by-sides.

  16. I know LEDs are a source of RFI but I'm pretty sure @nokones didn't have them turned on during his test. So, as far as I'm concerned, the test is still valid and the Firestick wins. Good info. I haven't bought a CB yet but I keep circling back around to the idea. If I ever do, I will likely get a Firestick for it.
  17. I just want a list of radios and instructions on how to unlock them.
  18. This is just the sort of thing that makes me want to look into NVIS. But you have to have a ham license to do that. At one of our club meetings recently a guy talked about doing that.
  19. @WSDU214 You aren't allowed to use digital on GMRS except for very short bursts i.e. location or short text message.
  20. Could be CH26 or 18RP I don't remember what it is on that radio even though I have a couple. Don't worry about the offset, as long as you are on a repeater channel, the offset is already set. Forget about Zello. Request the tones from the owner. Once you have the tones, read the manual for how to set them on the radio. You can also use the CPS which is easier than manually programming. At this point, if you have a problem, start a new thread describing exactly what you have done and what problem you have encured.

  22. That's amazing. I can see getting permission on a cruise ship but I really didn't expect it on a plane.
  23. The Tundra is actually made it Texas.
  24. Hey! I resemble that comment!
  25. @WSEZ869 Due to some recent FCC "action" if you will, many linked GMRS systems are now unlinked. There are some that are still linked but they have never been widely publicized and likely never will be. You kind of have to be in-the-know or do some scanning to find them. Good luck.
