Not everyone will be in the worst part of an EMP. I think it's worth doing what we can to protect some communications devices.

@WRWW910 I don't own one of those radios but if you are looking for something simple, it looks like it will do the job. If you are like some of us and want to program in every repeater known to man, it might get a little frustrating.
The description says "30 GMRS channels (repeater capable), 219 programmable scanner channels (RX only)"
A problem I have noticed is that even when a radio offers 200+ channels, only 8 can be programmed to transmit on repeaters, the rest can only receive. It doesn't make sense to me to have all those channels and not be able to transmit on them even when they are programmed with GMRS frequencies.
Just something to be aware of.
P.S. I have a UV-5R "GMRS" version and I can transmit on ALL 127 channels as long as they are programmed with GMRS frequencies.

And maybe a word on "Chirp" I've had alot of issues with it.
I think Chirp has such a steep learning curve because they cover so many different manufacturers. Their online documentation really helps me.

A unique key would prevent inserting a row with the same node number.

How do you make Google maps tell you direct distance?
1) Right click on location A and select Measure Distance.
2) Pan over and left click on location B.
It's a little different on the phone.

What type of antenna connector does it have? For that age, likely a BNC.
Yes, it is BNC.

So you need a phone to use the gps function on the radio?
No, I'm saying that you should not be completely without GPS if you have a modern phone.

Not sure about mobile radios and GPS but even without service the GPS on your phone should still work.

The UV-17R can be a decent listener and a UV-5R will eat it's lunch in the transmit dept.
@WRQC626 Thanks, that is exactly the kind of feedback I was looking for.

@back4more70 thanks for the input. I'm on a very tight budget. Would you say that the UV-17R transmits and receives as well as the UV5R?
Thanks.

Just wondering if anyone has this radio and what you think about it. Saw this yesterday and it looks like a nice radio. Large screen, easy to read buttons, hearing aid, all the things that are important to old guys like me.

I have a couple of MP31 that have this type of charge. Haven't found any drawbacks yet.

FCC Enforcement

@WRQC527 Yes, it seems that they do not go after anyone for just that specific offense but like you said, they will toss it in to the mix. Interference though is definitely something they are going after and I'm glad they are. Interference is such an unnecessary jerk thing to do and should be punished.
