Man, you're kind of a dick online.  You were one of the people I would watch regularly when trying to figure out this whole GMRS thing.  Your schtick is funny on YouTube but something is getting lost in translation via text.

I have no intention of going GROL, even though there are positions at my employer that could benefit, they would be a step down from my current role.
My wife may be willing to get her ham tech license, if only because it means that two adults could operate all of the equipment.

WRXN668 got a reaction from WRFI345 in Constructed an under-canopy mount for a pickup truck
My main application for GMRS is mobile communications with other members of a group when away from cell service while camping or four wheeling.  To that end I constructed an antenna mount concealed under the fiberglass truck canopy using an old headache rack and some telecom rack shelves.

Just finished cobbling this together last night.  I've got probably ten hours into it, half to modify the headache rack to fit the inside of the shell, and half to install the antenna mount and figure out how to get the cable into the truck and to solder on the PL-259 connector.
I need to do some further testing and I may need to make an extension to the shelf to better position everything, we'll see.  Since I'm dual-licensed for amateur and GMRS this is a COMPACTenna in 2m/70cm, it seems to work well enough for GMRS that it'll be good enough, but I haven't ruled out a dedicated antenna for GMRS on the other shelf.
There are more images in the gallery.

I personally am not aware of any part 95e approved radios that would allow to make this change. I think the thought is if you are following the rules and using compliant radios it’s a non issue. The concern is then at least limited to those already stepping out of the regulations. Like painting lines for a crosswalk, if you step out you probably know it. Amateur Radio is painting their own lines within guidelines they have learned and have demonstrated by passing an exam for their license. My thoughts anyway FWIW.

This is one of those if/then statements where people link two unrelated concepts to try and make their point. In fact, the whole post is a veiled rant against hams. The reality is that GMRS requires a license so the FCC is reasonably assured that you may have at least heard of the rules. Amateur radio allows a person, even at the Technician level, to use all kinds of frequencies, and at power levels that can actually cause interference on other frequencies, and in some cases actual harm to living beings. Therefore, testing is required so the FCC is reasonably convinced that the licensee is aware of the many more rules, concepts and hazards that apply to ham radio.

I looked it up earlier this year and there were something like 13 thousand more active ham licenses last year than the year before.  That doesn’t point to it going away.
Basic testing is necessary in order to ensure that people have learned the bare minimum regulations and a small amount of the science.  Many of the most basic questions that people ask when they become involved in radio are those things that a person learns while studying to pass the Technician test.  Not only that but the questions are all publicly available. Eight year old children pass the test.  Some ham clubs even have one day cram and test days where a person goes through the material for a while and then immediately tests on it.
The test is truly not a barrier unless a person is unwilling to put forth any effort at all.

There are plenty of folks running around with GMRS who already don't follow the simple rules (identify transmissions, no swearing, etc.).  Can you imagine if these same folks decided to do the same on analog public service bands (telling cops and fire bogus information)?  And no, I am not an amateur radio licensee.

Show me the paragraph in the *current* GMRS rules (Part 95 E) where it says that.
Oh wait, you won't be able to do so, because there IS no paragraph where it says that.
What it DOES say is that you can have a radio certified for Part 95 E and "another section" as long as it cannot transmit on Part 97 (amateur radio) frequencies.  But the manufacturer still needs to submit for Part 95 E certification in order for the radio to be legal on GMRS.
Nowhere does it say that Part 90 radios are automatically OK to use on GMRS.

They don't have to be Part 95 type-accepted to be legal to use on Part 95 Subpart E freqs. Part 95 allows the use of Part 90 type-accepted radio units on GMRS channels.

Digital and sat are interesting but I got my license last month just because of monitoring a few 2m simplex channels. They sounded like a good group of folks. One of my GMRS friends got his ticket, joined the group and convinced me to do the same after letting my license expire 20 years ago. Kinda cool to do VHF simplex 30 miles but still primarily use GMRS for repeaters - just a bit more relaxed than ham repeaters are. Just got my 4th ARRL letter in the mail today asking to join in a month, that is annoying. They serve their propose I suppose but come on....
To OP (OffRoaderX), you are a smart guy and know your way around radios, probably more so than 95% of other GMRS users. Hit up hamsudy.org and take a sample test and see how you do or just run through the entire test question pool a few times and I'm sure you will ace it.

Why don't we all just agree to petition the FCC for repeater use while using VHF MURS then we can call that horse dead after that's all said and done but I hardly doubt the FCC will budge on that I've been having numerous discussions on social media about this topic and a lot of them are agreeing that a petition should get sent into the FCC regarding repeater use for this since gmrs obviously allows repeater usage then I think MURS should be allowed to have its own repeater use itself.

I'll have to look out for those models.
In theory I have an NMO-mag-mount around here somewhere, magnetizes to the roof and has NMO for whatever antenna I would choose.  But I can't find either it or my longer 2m/70cm high-gain rubber-ducky.  I guess this is what happens when you don't operate for nearly a decade and lose track of where you've put stuff.
If I can make GMRS work better than it did this last test then I might buy some mobiles for the truck, travel trailer, and my wife's Jeep, and have the handhelds available for hiking or otherwise when the group separates from the vehicles.  But I want to prove it out for my application before I commit to spending hundreds of dollars.

I was talking about amateur radio with a coworker and another coworker mentioned these classes of license, turns out he has one.  Basically his is for maritime operations predominantly as he was living in a port city at the time he was in trade school.  It's a perpetual license so never expires even if he hasn't used it.  Ostensibly it's for things like ship-to-ship, ship-to-shore, that sort.
