Welcome. You are in the right place. There is a ton of information and very helpful people here, so I recommend you join and look around.
First thing? Turn it on and hit the scan button. You may hear someone. If you do, push the PTT button and say hi.
Agreed. I have mine set to monitor one channel only, the one I'll transmit on. It's convenient to have the other three available with the touch of a button, but monitoring four channels, and being forced to switch to transmit on the last active channel, is not appealing.
Can the PTT-ID (or similar) be detected by the repeater and used as a filter, like a tone? If so it would be one way to limit access on a private repeater used by a small community -- would not work for something large as the ID would eventually get passed around.
I bought one about a year ago. I had it replaced because it was going through some weird power on-off cycle when the PTT was pushed, but the replacement has worked fine. It was on sale for $5 less than the 20 and had good reviews (thanks Randy) and a few more features.
Pardon my noobie ignorance, but all my GMRS radios have some sort of "PTT ID" field (or similar). Question: Can users be individually identified and disallowed?
I have a Baofeng DM-32UV, still in the box. I intend to configure the analog side for GMRS. I'll RX only on the digital side for now, but would like to know what I should be listening to. It's not a matter of how to program it, it's a matter of what to program, i.e. what should a DMR newbie be listening to? Is there a recommended beginner code plug?
Sorry, but I have to disagree. There will always be some knuckleheads sure, but when I wandered in here a couple years ago as a clueless wonder my first reaction was that this was one of the most professional, knowledgeable and helpful forums I'd ever run into. That's still true, IMHO.
People don't always agree on everything, but that's life. "Hostile" is the last adjective that leaps to mind.
