    Hi Everyone,

It's come to my attention that a few members may be posting advertisements for their business in an aggressive manner. For example, they may not be interacting with the other members in a productive way, only pushing their products or services.

I think it's a good time to enact a new policy for the forums whereby member advertising is prohibited without written consent from me, the owner. I don't mind a simple signature line that includes your company name, but I do not want to allow posts that are advertising your business. We cannot be held responsible for these posts and we certainly do not endorse any companies other than our approved advertisers.

If you'd like to advertise with us, please get in touch with me to discuss. I'm very flexible on rates; doesn't matter if you're a small company or large.

Our moderators Gary, William and Scott, as well as myself, reserve the right to edit or remove any posts which serve as an advertising platform that isn't approved by me. This serves to protect the other members as well as myGMRS and its parent company, RepeaterFinder, LLC.

    Thanks for your understanding,

You might not be on a repeater channel.  1-22 are simplex channels, which transmit on the same frequency they receive. But there are eight repeater channels which allow the repeater to transmit while simultaneously receiving.  Doing both at the same time is called Duplex. Different manufacturers denote those channels differently.  Some continue the numbering scheme and refer to them as channels 23-30, others repeat the 15-22 numbers but prepend or append RP to the channel, like 15RP, to indicate that they are repeater channels.
Repeaters receive on the 467 MHz main frequencies and transmit at exactly the same time on the 462 MHz main channels. That’s referred to as an offset and it is generally exactly 5.000 MHz for UHF channels (in ham radio also). They need an offset to be able to transmit while receiving. So, in your radio there should be eight repeater channels which are programmed to receive on exactly the same 462.xxx frequencies as 15-22, but which transmit on the main 467.xxx frequencies, where xxx is typically the same for both.  You need to use one of those.

It’s literally my base desk radio. I talk all over the region with it. 11 watts GMRS off of battery. USB-C and solar rechargeable. 11db gain antenna outside,.. means roughly 66 watts erp after coax loss..

I have 4 more of them. 3 in the cars and one still boxed just in case. Yeah they’re the best I’ve found yet… I try them all.

There's more  gravy than the grave about him?
Naw, Randy's ok (not that he needs me to defend him). He doesn't suffer fools much, he's not afraid to look foolish. He understands moreso than most, I think, that GMRS is not a hobby in the vein that amateur radio is but a communications service designed for local, point to point contacts. His rails against the sad hams of the world is more a fight against pedantic and priggish responses to his YouTube videos; and he has a point there as the SH behavior  is rampant on many FB pages and other social media platforms and is doing more to harm that hobby/service than most any other thing.
And he does know his GMRS radios!  Tests them, calls them as he sees them...

I did a recent test on a couple of HTs that enlightened me on that one. A good quality receiver does make a significant difference. Now, when I listen to NOAA, I only do it on the Kenwood.
Agreed. I have a lot of trees to punch through so wattage does come into play for me. Still want to get a higher antenna though and get some real results.

Going back to one of my old experiences when I worked for Motorola years ago...
A small city police department had a failure of their old GE repeater they had been nursing along for many years, so they needed a new one. Budgets were tight, but they insisted on a 100 watt unit. Now, the repeater was naturally on a hill, on a water tank, and was at the highest point in the city, and no more than a mile from the city limits in any direction. They wanted 100 watts. VHF, carrier squelch mind you...and 100 watts.
While they waited for a new repeater, we loaned them a Desktrac (not what you need for public safety, but it'll work in a pinch).
Once on the air, the asst chief said, man, that sounds good. And the range is great, can we just keep that one? Is it 100 watts?
    Sure, it's 100 watts.
It was in fact 25 watts..... no one could tell. They later got a new repeater, but we still didn't set it up for 100 watts.
Point is, don't get hung up on wattage, use what works for the situation you need it in.

This is exactly true. Unless your intended recipient is exactly matched to your setup, there is no need to worry over power. In fact, most repeaters are turned down for reliability, so a 100W rated repeater puts out something like 50W after the duplexer, often many are 50W rated repeaters putting out 20W after the duplexer, and have ears way beyond their transmit range. It's one reason I don't fret over having 45W UHF decks vs 50W. Now, in my communication plan, obviously, mobile radios in every car are preferred over HTs, but in that case its to get 3 miles simplex.

From tests I've seen on the YouTubes the V2 does get somewhere between 5 and 5.5 watts which is what it's rated at. I'm sure the lesser expensive radios only get 3 to 4 watts or if they're "out of spec" maybe 8 to 10 watts but anything calibrated for GMRS use in an HT should be around 5 watts plus/minus 1 watt. JMHO, YMMV.

WSAE510 got a reaction from arn in FCC Part 95
I'm going to express my thoughts about the part 95 rulings.
To start off, when I applied for my GMRS license, I requested a copy of the rules so I could have em on hand in my laptop. How ever, the handheld transceiver regard to limited power on it said 5 watts. Others today are arguing that truth.
Secondly, people are saying that they have the rights to use amplifiers with the GMRS mobile, base and handheld. I'm told that nobody can use a amplifier. The copy of the part 95 rules was updated December 22, 2023.
Either way I'm complying with the rules and IMHO I believe that the FCC should crack down on this issue.

Every GMRS radio groups on Facebook has a bunch of people who thinks the handheld GMRS radio is more than 5 watts. To be honest with you folks I've been told that my BTech GMRS V2 is 5 on high transmit power. I sit back and just roll my eyes 👁️👁️ in the back of my head 🤣🤣🤣
