Logan5 reacted to WRAK968 in negative offset repeater -dupolexer tuning
not at all. All duplexers use 1 lower frequency and one upper frequency. It doesn't matter which one is TX and which one is RX. All that matters is that those frequencies are isolated from one another which is what a duplexer does.

Logan5 reacted to berkinet in two repeaters one house
I'd go with vertical separation with as much distance between the two antennas as your mast will allow. The higher mounted antenna should be for the repeater you want the greatest range on.
And... DO NOT USE LMR-400

Logan5 reacted to intermod in Significant increase in users on repeater inputs
Our goal has been to give them a printed copy of the relevant FCC rule section, and get the contact number of their communications department or vendor and pass that to the local FCC enforcement folks, and report it to the FCC using their new on-line system. One phone call from the FCC usually has a direct effect. But that is just one company. There are many shipping companies, and it could take years of course as their radios are spread over many countries at any one time.
But I don't have time to do all this....thus the $150k remote controlled solution based on three of more mountain tops to save time. Can't afford that either.
If all the coastal repeater owners started reporting this stuff regularly using their new on-line system, the FCC might listen. We monitor our input in carrier squelch using a local speaker in the office (via two remoterig IP devices) so we know when it occurs.

Been saying it since this Midland came out. They're just selling a Chinese radio for twice the price. At least Btech doesn't try to hide where they're from.

Yes, you can pretty much do whatever you want with their programming software. Here is an example. I don't really have it programed this way, but look at channel 16.

Another part of that notice recognized that they could've used FRS but their transmitters lacked the proper certification.

The FCC just issued a notice of violation to Traffic Control Services for unlicensed operation on LMR and GMRS frequencies in 4 mid-Atlantic sates. https://docs.fcc.gov/public/attachments/DOC-357545A1.pdf

Logan5 reacted to ljones135 in Got in Deeper
Hey Everyone,
I've been a CB'er since Moby Dick was a minnow and learned of GMRS about 12 years ago. Just now getting deeper into it because I recently retired from EMS in Kansas City. I just bought a Midland MX400 to install in my Power Wagon. I've read some comments on here about Midland products, here's to hoping I have better luck. I'd like to know if there are any members that live close so I can put my radio to use. I'll be listening. WRAK287

These radios "Field programmable" are dangerous in the wrong hands. Way to easy to change freq. and accidentally key up on restricted frequencies. This may seem innocuous, but could have disastrous ramifications if it interferes with emergency services, causing death. I can not stress how easy it is to cause this type of interference with this "wrong type radio on GMRS",

You could just send the information to me. I can put the information into chirp and send back the saved file.
Just keep in mind anything past memory slot 30 is receive only.
Then you can at least have a file to look at how it was set. Also seems some locals are willing to come by. Then you can watch the process in person. It's pretty easy to do.

Logan5 reacted to intermod in Significant increase in users on repeater inputs
Unauthorized maritime users are now using the National Travel Tone (141.3 Hz) on our input. Yesterday we had about nine hours of regular transmissions that were strong enough to wipe out our portable radio users. This is the third time in about two months - same ones. These users had no significant accents typical of other maritime users. I believe we have filed over 110 complaints with the FCC using their Consumer Compliant site (https://consumercomplaints.fcc.gov/hc/en-us). They recently added a category for "Pirate/Unauthorized Operation", in addition to interference. Nice.
And the FCC does (eventually) respond with a personal phone call.

Same thing happening here in Fort Lauderdale. there is a maritime document spreading through the industry, that list 467, repeater inputs as safe to use in USA ports.

Logan5 reacted to marcspaz in *** For Emergency Use Only ***
There is a loose interpretation of the rules that say something like "in an emergency, forget all the restrictions you just read." Again, a loose interpretation... but that is the basics of it.
That said, it never hurts to practice, practice, practice. The two best pieces of advice I ever got was... the worst time to look for a lawyer is after you need one, and the worst time to learn how to use emergency equipment is during an emergency.

I will limit my comments to this incorrect assertion about California property tax law making it too expensive to remain. I am no fan of California's prop13 tax limits which place the major burden of property taxes on new homes and recent purchases. But, the fact is your friends would not have seen their taxes raised. Don't believe me. Here it is in the words of the organization that came up with proposition 13 in the first place. https://www.hjta.org/hot-topic/fire-victims-worried-about-your-prop-13-rights-dont-be/

Morse code not needed, Ohm's law: I=V/R. Here, done, you're ready for the test.
Me and later my daughter used hamexam.org for the preparation. If you create an account there it'll keep your statistics, showing the areas to study/memorize more.

Since Amateur Radio is officially designated as a service (Part97) by the FCC I cannot imagine your city is using the term with any generality. I see two options:
A) talk to the city anyway and see what they say.
or
get a Tech HAM license, build your tower and mount a GMRS antenna on it. You wouldn't ever have to own a single piece of HAM equipment.
BTW, the downside of asking first is once they have officially said no, you are totally out of luck. I suggest you go with plan "B."

Logan5 reacted to berkinet in Seeking logical rationale for Type 95
I had assumed the first couple of responses had adequately addressed the original post. But, that seems to not be the case. So, I will give it a try...
#1) GMRS and Amateur radio are two completely separate services with different applications, users and purposes. In particular, the US Amateur Radio service is based on International agreements:
#2) As the FCC made clear in its response to the 2014 petition, allowing non-certified radios to be used in the GMRS "would allow for the proliferation of home-built, non-standardized transmitters in the GMRS, with no practicable way for the Commission to monitor and enforce regulatory compliance for these devices." Further, allowing licensed amateurs to operate non-certified equipment in the GMRS would provide special privileges for users of one service operating in another, completely unrelated, service. This would be an extremely slippery slope, one any regulatory agency would want to avoid.
#3) Amateur Radio and GMRS each have their place in the world. I believe the FCC made the right decision. Blurring the boundary between the two would not result in any real benefit for anyone and might cause a lot of problems for both services.
#4) If you really want/must use ham gear on GMRS, go ahead, nobody is really going to stop you. Take responsibility for your action and operate accordingly. Just do not expect the FCC to officially condone your actions.

Hey Ya'll,
I'm new to it all. Right or wrong I have a couple of radios off ebay coming. I have read alot of information here. Thanks for that. I am interested in gmrs for several reasons including travel back up communications, family communications and possibly data if that becomes a thing.
