  1. All antennas require a ground plane. It's the other half of the antenna in a mobile enviromment. It's the counterpoise for the element. To answer your question. Yes, a no ground plane antenna will work better in the situation you describe, were there is not much metal underneath to work with as a ground plane. It works even better with an adequate ground plane. Most no ground plane antennas ended up using the coax as the counterpoise. Just can't beat the laws of physics. Doesn't matter if it is UHF or HF. But the difference might be minimal to not noticable. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
  2. That's another reason why. Some radios aren't capable of going out of band for a number of reasons. Some basically aren't mars/cap mod capable. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
  3. For me dual band a is for repeater scanning, band b is for aprs. So my radio logic, said I needed a dedicated xtl for gmrs and p25..lol... well that will change when my lazy ass puts the xg100m in so I can have p25 uhf/vhf and gmrs on another radio without having to dual brick dual face the xtl. 4. Missed it was a mobile. You are correct about the options. Was just a suggestion. Because it sounds like he was tired of the china experience of programming. I get the m cps is a pain to learn. For cheap and easy the db20g on mobile is hard to beat. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
  5. Shrug. I know om my gmrs v1 from baofeng. The firmware allowed me to change the frs memory slots. But I couldn't change the power on those memory slots (stuck in low). Personally, I would say box the radios up and return them. Get something else that might be inline more with your customization wants. Maybe a motorola xts? Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
  6. Have you looked at hamfest for a large cavity style? You might be able to get them to tune for you as well. They should also be able to fit into your price range. May even perform better then you expect. The cheap chinsese ones are the only ones I have seen for cheap. But often barely provides enough isolation. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
  7. Should note: highly recommend a mag mount mobile antenna. Even with a handset it works well (cavet, your experience will vary). Well much better than ht inside of a car with the rubber duck antenna. It is also why we recommend sma to bnc adapters for the ht and bnc to so239 for the antenna. 8. Much better. Remember UHF is line of sight. So the higher the antenna the better it will work (see). Power comes into play to overcome distance and obstructions (like leaves and trees). Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
  9. Nor sure about chirp. But a video I was watching on the rt86 using retvis software clearly has a decode and encode field. It's only 16 channels and was design for business use. So be careful with settings like frequency hop and encryption, both are not allowed on frs/gmrs of course. Don't really like that the each frequency has to be set manually. Not a problem for me but I can see new users running to problems by simply fat fingering. Since you have the cable try the stock retvis software. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
  10. Repeater outputs are the simplex frequencies Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
  11. Nah. You got to say that as well. Jk more of a better way to pronounce it. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
  12. Lol.. it's po (poh) fung It's the same company always has been. It was slight different productions. Due to how the Chinese characters were interperted. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
  13. Does it sound ok when sitting still? Can be a combination of things. 1. crap mics 2. Radios are set to narrow band on the channel (fairly often cause what you describe, being underwater). It will mostly sound like it is undermodulatrd and muffled. Especially, if one radio is set to wideband and the rx radio is set to narrowband. 3. Picket fencing (not likely). The radio signal partially blocked from one radio to another. Sounds like the audio is skipping. Keep in mind the antennas aren't static. Due to them wagging in the wind (the longer they are the worse they can get) can cause other issues. But if it is muddled audio between two mobile radios close to each other, might bet is 1 or both radios are set to narrow band. Frs channels are narrow band by default and can't be changed. Verify on both radios are set to wide band on the particular frequency. Use the repeater out put channels and jack the power to mid levels and see if things improve. 14. Should be analog and fusion capable. Can't remember exactly, been a while since I programmed. But if I remember correctly, fusion doesn't use tones. So if a fusion/wirex repeater has a tone it is usually fm analog capable. Then you just program fm normally, frequency, offset and tones, basically ignore that is says anything about fusion. If you have a fusion capable radio, then just make sure your wirex ID (fusion id) is programmed into the radio and turn ams on. I usually set mine to fm wide with the red bar. Make sure the repeater is programmed with the fm setting. Then if it hears fm it stays analog. If it hears fusion it flips to fusion. Bit more complicated to start a fusion transmission. Since you manually flip it into fusion mode. I love fusion wide (sounds most natural) I think fusion narrow sounds more like p25 and it's meh. Remember Fusion= yeasu c4fm digital Wirex = yeasu c4fm digital with internet ( able to connect to Yeasu Wirex rooms over the internet) Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
  15. Roland will be greatly missed. He was a big signature in the D.C. metro area as well as up and down the mid-atlantic, PA, NJ/NY and WVa. His base setup (completely legal) had some reach and if the conditions were right with some ducting. His voice could be heard on a repeater by you or even on simplex. For 2 years straight, when I commuted to and from work. He would often chat with me, purposely pausing his day to catch me on various repeaters. I have caught him doing this with multiple people including Marc. He was outstanding steward for the radio community and was upstanding. In person, his Veteran Vietnam Naval side came out with the swear words. What a character that "old fart" was. Rest in peace WRPJ758, 42 (former Capital City React) Roland you deserve it of any person I have ever met. The D.C. area GMRS community lost a great one. Now who will answer the 5x radio checks a day on all the repeaters. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
  16. Outside of an eye poking risk, well poking risk. No You can buy universal cap you glue on. Better yet try the vendor to see if they can get you a replacement. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
  17. Should be in the radio documentation. Not all ready can tone scan, but most none frs radios have the ability. Then you have to wait for transmissions before you tone scan. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
  18. Don't trust the coverage map. They can be set by the repeater post owners. Often are a guesstimate, with little to no verification. Couple that with a 50w base station vs a 5w ht then its acrual coverage can/may/usually will be different. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
  19. Are you sure it's a repeater output? The repeater outputs are the simplex frequencies. If in fact it is a repeater output. I would tone scan to see what it is. You may have found an unpublished repeater in your area. Or simply found a repeater you can not key up due to distances. I frequently here the Towson repeater at my home. But can not key it up due to the distance. The repeater transmits better then it hears from my location. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
  20. That would make sense. I knew the only place feature could be added was on the cloud. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
  21. Oh, good to know. I was told the Apxnext was programmed via the ONLY the cloud. I will have to expand this conversation with him to get better clarification. If need so the group has people from Fema, local fd techops and some other 3 letter agencies so I can get clarification. I mean once you know someone in the govt whom woks with radios. You find the circle is heavily interlinked. Chances are you probably know most of them. Thanks for the input. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
  22. And some more sounds from hf and like radios these are the transmissions over the bands. They even have some of the military transmissions encrypted of course. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
  23. At least it is localized. If you like cool sounds. Here is a video clip of a guy recording different sounds of EMF and their source. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
  24. Sounds kinda like this or similar? This uhf radar. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
  25. Lol.. Now I am imagining chuffing mixed the sounds from the movie Contact. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
