What Would Cause Static/Noise Across ALL GMRS Channels?
kidphc replied to OffRoaderX's topic in General Discussion
Do you have a SDR screen capture of the interference? Is it like the noise floor is way higher or there is something like a carrier on all the frequencies? Maybe our government decided to build uhf version of the Russian woodpecker..lol Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk -
That's ma "M" for you. You should see the bs for an Apxnext... hey we will control it from the cloud. Entitlements and programming done from the cloud. So you get the opportunity to pay "M" to program with something they may decide later they no longer care to keep the servers up on. Yeah, yeah, they plan on allowing local programming, so they said 2 years ago. As far as piracy. I worked for a software company for a long time. I hate piracy. With a cavet, if the firm obsoleted a piece of software with no extended support options. I am ok with people using it, at their own risk. Revenue generation was no longer an option for that firm. Thus I was going to mention blue max. Someone beat me to the punch. Most of my friends have the rib boxes an old pc or are running dosbox. There are ways around all of it. Another thing with a quality mag mount, recommend nmo style, additional connector. You change your ht to a psedu mobile. Just don't expect miracles? Your dealing with less than 10 watts. For me at least, most ht antennas are a waste of money. This includes tactical gigantic antennas like the abree 48" folding one. Even on my ham/lmr hts, small exceptions. Personally, I wish I had saved the money for something like an at779uv/db20g for a starter mobile/base with a quality antenna setup. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk

Because everyone's terrain and situation is different. Go test... no one answer, unfortunately. So ask away, this is what the forum is for. It is a hobby so l have fun, and ignore the aholes out there. Also I edited my original post with the connector type. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk

Are trying to do ht to ht? Most handheld radios with antennas utilize a sma connector. So your radio will have an sma male or sma female connector and the antenna will have the opposite gender. You can look online for photos. The one with the hole is the female [emoji14] You can go one step further and get the proper connector to something like a bnc connector. Why? Sma connector the threads and pins can get damaged fairly easily. So if your disconnecting and connecting a lot, a connector with a bnc will be useful to not damage the radio or antenna. As far as yagis. Yes, they are directional. They usually have about 20° cone (about 3-5 elements) for for direction. The higher the gain, the narrower the cone gets. Gmrs, UHF and SHF are very line of sight. So if you want distance you need to get above obstructions. Ie, buildings, trees, terrain. Sorry for being long winded. EDIT: just checked, according to Mikor that radio has a female sma connector on the radio. So something like a male sma to so259 connector should work to connector to most antennas. Pl259 is the male connector on most coax and so239 is the female counterpart. Please check the coax to verify connector if pre-installed. Because it could be N type, which would require different adapters. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk

We use to walk under transmission line, when I was younger. We would go at night with the old shop fluorescent bulbs. It was very cool how the lights would light up. You could make the emf waves in the light patterns, like ripples of waves. Now I am older I do not recommend it. Lol Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk

It is not the arcing so much. It's more of the large electrical discharge of a near by strike 1-2 miles away can generate large voltage spikes, almost as bad for electronics with out the same visual effect as a direct strike. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk

Shouldn't be an issue, as long as the transformers are not having issues. They should be well outside of near fields with the distance of each other. Just make sure tower can not intersect the lines in the event of a failure with a fall over. Don't forget to calculate the height with the antenna. One caveat pay attention to equipment grounding. Electrical hv transmission towers are like lightning magnets. This can attract near field (under a mile or so) strikes. Doesn't have to be a direct hit to damage to your equipment. Adding a ground plane kit should not make a significant improvement. The matching coil is going to be close to the hood. Unfortunately, that is generally were a good amount of the radio signals will be comming from. Plus you are going to have about 1/4 to 1/3 of the antenna not shielded by the windshield. It will work, just not as well as if it was on the roof of a car/truck. With mine on the hood mount of the landcruiser I saw swr north of 2.2 in the gmrs frequencies. One thing to keep in mind when off roading. It is a stiff antenna with a high wind load. Even with the optional spring it doesn't like taking whacks. There a metric crap ton of allen grub screws. That strip and work loose overtime. I got tired of tilting my over and just switched back to my larsen 2/70 (half of the paint is missing from all the whacks). Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk

Retevis RT97 GMRS Repeater PowerDivider Dustproof 8CH Base Station+2*GMRS Radio

Not really ideal. Find a center location for the repeater. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk -
They all work decently. Even the Rtlsdr off of Amazon, usually to $20-40. It is usually what I buy for friends (usually with a minimum with rabbit ears. Then tell them to look at the different consoles (software) to find what they like. Each console has a different feel and some are way more technical. Don't get caught up in to many of the recommendations. Nor the the technical like lna's, bias tees and long wires off the jump. It has a lot to learn. But first get your hands on a cheaper unit like an rtlsdr. I had a generic one (silver one) and it looks like Amazon is full of the Nolecs now adays. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk

Last time this bad of a cme event occurred it was suppose to be in 2005, 19 years ago At the time personally, I didn't care so no memory. But then again alot less electronics were available for the average consumer. So shrug. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk

That is one negative of using base radios. How long power will last without electricity If you are using baofengs. Buy the battery pack that's let you drop in aa batteries. Have a fresh pack of aa batteries with the aa battery holder. I nice to have is also battery eliminator. At worst if you have gas in the car you can hook that up while the car is running. Can you get the antenna closer to 50-100 in the middle of the radius, as well as get a repeater with a bit more power? You should be able to cover all 6 houses depending on terrain and obstructions. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk -
BTech GMRS RPT50 - NEW 50-Watt GMRS Only Repeater
kidphc replied to OffRoaderX's topic in Equipment Reviews
Maybe in version 2.. lol Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk -
Side benefits, which I found useful. I was able to find signals easier, adjust bandwidth (figuring them out), and identify different modulation types via the visual signature. It also helped when signals were out of frequencies in normal us amateur bands. Due differencent in ITU regions and government band plans. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk

BTech GMRS RPT50 - NEW 50-Watt GMRS Only Repeater
kidphc replied to OffRoaderX's topic in Equipment Reviews
I think they were aiming for a turn key option, as their main selling point. Which of course they didn't push. I agree an external can Is more effective. But it wouldn't be turn key and the packaging wouldn't be as small. For first time repeater set up it really simplifies it for more novice installers. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk -

For whatever reason I haven't been able to open thar link since day one. I normally like to review the legislation before posting. If I was an error sorry for posting the thread. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk -
Halfway down to the side a bit. You will not notice any difference in 1-2 inches. You may with experience notice a difference if close to the radio antenna of the car. Due to possible coupling of the two antennas. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk

Might of stumbled on a lmr/commercial frequency. I know private p25 repeaters of my friend is interstitial between the gmrs repeater frequencies. You sure it wasn't 462.625? Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk

Here is the big one more the the kenwoods? Personally, I want to get my hands on a 200 or an apx. But the xg is more my budget and does just fine, minus it only being a bit smaller then a thales. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk

No clue. Not really into 1.25m (220mhz). There is a repeater local after monitoring for about 2 weeks almost no traffic. Although, I have friends whom love the band since it is so empty. It never peaked my interest so I don't know with the xg series. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk

What kind of antenna should I put on my travel trailer?

What kind of antenna should I put on my travel trailer?
kidphc replied to wilhelm's question in Technical Discussion
Certainly better than just an HT inside of a trailer. Although, 5 watts is a bit low. Anytone 779uv/db20g are like $80-90. Tiny, can run off a cigarette lighter poet and 20watts to boot. Food for thought. From my house to about 3/4 of a mile to a shopping center (through trees and past houses hill top to hill top) hts can not make it. But the db20g/at779uv at 20w with a roll up slim jim, n9tax gmrs, (inside the house inside of pvc wiring track) makes it clearly to the ht back and forth. The antenna tip is about 20-30 feet off the ground in the kitchen attrium. Most cellphone will use sat for gps and augmented cellular towers to make it more accurate. The newer phones seem to rely mostly on the cellular location services. Part of the reason I suggested something like a garmin inreach. Short text messages regardless of cellular data. Small and compact with the availability of larger units with maps. If there are questions ask mmarc, he uses them for offroading. All trail app is nice. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
