I built a repeater out of (2) Retevis RA87 40W Mobile Radios
Socalgmrs replied to WSHF963's question in Technical Discussion
I just can’t…… tuning, type of coax, antenna, programming…. Retivis radios….. so much could be wrong here. -
Accessing a repeater with my Wouxon KG-935+
Socalgmrs replied to WSHG703's question in Technical Discussion
You’re gonna need to learn what frequencies relate to what “channels”. The radio should have come with a chart. When you purchased your license from the fcc you did say you read and understood the gmrs rules. If you did read the rules you said you did, you would know what channels relate to what’s frequencies. You can also do an internet search of gmrs frequencies I’d also highly recommend you program on a computer it’s waaay easier. -
Wow 30miles? That’s a HUGE coverage. Hehe
-
I have them in all our rigs coupled with 20w radios 60-100 miles happens every day of the year no issues what so ever. to answer your question, some want an nmo mount yes. And that’s fine but what I’ve found with gmrs, jeeps, 2a items and many other things in life the people with money love to spend it then tell other people their stuff is junk. It happens here all the time, it happens with jeep people and others ect…. ive got many hobbys that I spend every extra minute partaking of. I spend 2-3 thousand dollars a month on those hobbys gmrs isn’t one of them. Gmrs is a tool that I want to spend as little as possible and still have it work for me every day. I’ve figured out how to spend very little and get way more range than most people and the ut 72 is a big part of that.

Why? Just announce your call sign when using the repeater and make sure every one else does as well. No id o Matic needed. Then but the saved money into a better repeater.
-
Yup. A few company’s make one and you can wire one up pretty easy. however I wouldn’t waste the time or money on a Wouxon. Eeewww

I said some “MAY BE” I did not say “are for sure.” If you understand the Engrish ranguage you would comprehendo the statemento. probably don’t read the manuals either. since linking has and is and hopefully always will be against the rules I’m pretty sure most nets are not linked. btw this is not an air port, you do not need to announce your departure.
-
I think the real question is do you NEED a repeater. If your asking this question you may not have a clue what a repeater does or if you actually need one.
-
Some how this post got duplicated.
-
I’d for sure say ask the repeater owner but yes like already said that is what gmrs is for. It happens all the time on our local repeaters.
-
I don’t know of a single net that is linked. I think you have it backwards. Most are not linked in any way however some may still be. We have at least 10 local net check ins covering a radius of over 300miles and not one of them are linked especially after the fcc clarification.

I have a repeater that is 204 miles away and it comes in crystal clear and it’s not linked. It’s running a 50w radio and a 12db gain antenna radiating about 780watts at 6000ft and I’m at 4500ft I check in on it all the time. Sooo not impossible in any way shape or form. As a matter of fact I’m 204 miles to the west and a buddy was in a 3rd state 190miles to the repeaters south east and we could talk to each other no problem. Line of sight and a good antenna is key

Deregulation; here’s your opportunity to make a difference!
Socalgmrs replied to SteveShannon's topic in FCC Rules Discussion
We need to get FRS off of 15-22 for starters. Then we need dedicated repeater frequency pairs that are not shared with simplex. Then we need the fcc to enforce the rules that are already in place. -
Tidradio H8 (2nd gen) two repeaters on one channel
Socalgmrs replied to WSHG225's question in Technical Discussion
when programming a radio a repeater uses tones. If the 2 repeaters are on the same channel 15-22 and the tones are the exact same then yes it’s the same set up but if they are on separate channels or have different tones then no. -
Probably the antenna to be honest.
-
What have you tried? What is giving the issue? Might wanna lay it all out so people can help better. my opinion with all the new posts every week it seams about radioddity radios send it back and buy a good radio that doesn’t have issues.

Everyone speeds it doesn’t make it right. It’s funny how people give opinions on what is right and wrong when in reality it’s a factual thing. Gmrs is for communication while doing an activity. That’s it. It’s not about chit chat, making an antenna out of pop cycle sticks, meeting strange men that call themselves queens, chatting about your 100th antenna for your hand held radio, food, ect. That’s what ham is for. Sorry ladies but gmrs is for leaving the basement and getting out into the world in real life. Go hunt, off road, plow a field, work cattle, go on a road trip hike bike camp ect. The reason it matters is because some people actually want the air waves clear so they can use it properly. its the exact same thing as if few people think it’s totally ok to drive the wrong way on the freeway. It’s not ok and never will be and now the freeway is useless to those that want to obey the rules. It’s always funny how the same people that call out others for using ham radios on gmrs are the same people that will chit chat for hours about dinner recipes.

While I can’t stand these radios and totally and completely agree with tossing them all in a dumpster fire, are you totally sure the tones and settings are correct? Antenna tight and secure and not broken? Close enough with good line of sight? All radios on high power? While I don’t think radios should need firm ware updates are they all using the same firmware? With all the problems I read on this site about many different radios and makers I can’t believe tid, retivis, radioddity, rugged , midland, Wouxon are still in business.

Never had a problem like that ever in my life. That sucks. Yea I’d try a dedicated antenna store
-
It’s a ground plane antenna. Does it have 12-18” of flat steel or aluminum in all directions? Nope. So no it is not. It’s not an opinion it’s science. As for the other hockey puck in front of the window same difference. That’s a horrible place to mount anything. But if you don’t care about transmitting lore then a few hundred yards then I guess you’re ok but in that event an ht inside the car would have done just fine. if my set ups can’t do 100 or more miles I toss it in the garbage. As for theft I’ve had gmrs or cb antennas on every vehicle I’ve ever owned and never once have I had one stolen and I lived near down town Los Angeles for a few years. but in the end Hockey pucks and salt shakers mounted in strange and awkward places give me and my friends and family something to laugh at while out and about so keep on keepin on.

Yes first things first for most repeaters you’re gonna need to put In the tones and be on the right pair of frequencies. Then no matter how many watts you’re gonna need line of sight. I’d say set up the radios first and drive as close as you need to to talk to the repeater. Then see how well that works. Then get into a cheap pair of hand held 5w radios they always come in handy. And then if needed get a good 20w with a goon antenna and coax up as high as possible. Antenna and coax are were money should be spent. A 5w ht hooked to a good antenna set up should get you 100miles line of sight. Gmrs is very line of sight dependent. Start with an ht hooked to good coax and antenna such as a comet 712efc mounted as high as possible.
-
Man can’t believe I missed this thread. This cheap repeater is listed at 5w so why would any one expect more than 5w. I’d figure 3-4 max so doing great. Second you say “needing any where from 12-24volts”. That is actually not what retivis says at all. It says it supports 12-24volts. So needs 12 can use upto 24v. Not the same thing. And last you said “circuit board circled in orange”. That’s not a circle its a square so I’d say it’s outlined in orange not circled.

Great. Always good to have a good local store. I don’t really think gmrs should have many questions. It’s suck a simple service I think many/most people over complicate it to a point that loads of time effort energy and money is spent to do the same thing some guy does with a few bucks and a few minutes.
-
Hook it up to rt systems and go through the settings.

What have you heard, and why did you listen?
Socalgmrs replied to Davichko5650's topic in Family Radio Service (FRS)
I try and not listen to any one else I don’t know. I try and find channels with no traffic then use tones. Can’t stand to listen to strangers on the radio. I do report all schools that go blabbing kids names on the open air waves. It’s totally illegal and an invasion of privacy. Some times lawyers even get involved if they won’t stop. In the end they all stop.
