  1. For the antenna, I use a Tram 1486... It was not very expensive, it does not look like a space-station antenna on the roof so it got quick spousal-approval, it has a very low wind-profile, and it was very easy to cut/tune. For the radio I use an XTL-5000 but i would not recommend it for a beginner.
  2. I forgot all about this thread and wasn't even really paying attention from the beginning.. I just hop in, stir the pot and let everyone else figure it out. Carry on guys, you're doing great!
  3. Please update us and let us know what he finds.
  4. Never had this occur on either Jeep, but even though we've driven through some heavy rainstorms its mostly hot and dry here.
  5. "N" means "Normal", "i" means Inverted.. DPL/DTC tones are, by default "normal". So unless it pacifically says "inverted" or "i", then you would always use the "N". EDIT: Glob-dang SteveShannon beat me again by 10 seconds.
  6. Undocumented H.A.M. radio operator for over 40 years here, so nobody can question or dispute anything I say. FCC LAW 95.1705 c(2) says: Failure to follow this law or violating it in any way will result in jail-time or a $10,000 fine, so don't risk it. Instead just make her get a H.A.M. ticket and be done with it.
  7. What? I don't understand? why so angry? How is finding men to chat with on Grindr any different from finding men to chat with on GMRS or H.A.M. radio? Please explain because I must be confused or something.
  8. Yes, it will degrade performance, but the degradation will be so negligible you will never notice any difference - ASSUMING that you do it right (don't short it out or anything) and assuming you use a quality connector - ie; get the $9 one from a name you've heard of and not the $0.99 one from a name you can't pronounce.
  9. Maybe you should take it back to the guy you got it from and tell him you want one that works?
  10. ok, something is seriously wrong.. That's the best I can do so, I'm out.
  11. attach a pic of the front panel showing the display and all the buttons/lights.
  12. Is it ALSO transmitting on the correct frequency or ONLY on the wrong frequency?
  13. are you sure its set to the correct channel, and in Repeater-mode?
  14. Its not programmed the way you think it is.
  15. The public record of the FCC proves you are telling fairy tales.. again...
  16. Yah, helps you sound like a radio-dork. GMRS is for normal people speaking normal english. If you want to sound and talk like a dork get a H.A.M. radio license.
  17. We prefer the term "Geographically-challenged rural lifestyle enthusiast". thank you for your understanding and compassion.
  18. It's not an opinion. it is fact based on the FCC's public (lack of) enforcement record. What I am doing is telling people to use their own brains and try not to be brainwashed bootlickers ALL the time. But if i do decide to promote rule-breaking I'll be sure to tell you first so we can watch you cry about it. mmhkay?
  19. I paid $500 for a used VXR-7000 in excellent/confirmed working condition.. I then had to buy a programming cable and acquire the software, buy an antenna and coax, mast, etc, and I had to pay to have the duplexer tuned.. it all came up to around $800'ish dollars of monies.
  20. Considering that the risk is about 99.99999999999999999999999999999999998% in everyone's favor of NOT "getting caught", you'd have to be an idiot to not take that risk. and it is likely that very few "normal" people would even consider those odds a "risk" at all..
  21. Neither.. On a GMRS radio, Channel 28 already has the correct values. So just go to channel 28, enter the TRANSMIT CTC/DTC/DPL tone for the repeater (don't worry about the RECIEVE tone because you're already confused and it is not necessary).. save your changes, and you're done.
  22. I would respectfully disagree with my colleague from Montana on #4 - I would take elevation/antenna-hight above ground over power any day. UNLESS he meant electrical power to run the thing? In that case, yah, he right.
  23. Unless you tell us what, exactly you mean by "decent" you're just going to get opinions and people confirming to themselves that they bought the most "decent" radio for them.. But be aware that ALL GMRS radios will require you to spend at least 10 minutes reading the user-manual to learn how to use them... I have owned/used virtually every GMRS brand/model radio on the market and there is no one brand/model that is any easier to figure out than any other.. But honestly, if you can't figure out how to use a Talkpod, then you're going to struggle with anything. Did the clock on your VCR always flash "12:00" ?
  24. THIS IS NOT TRUE!!!!1 STOP LYING!!! if you use an illegal radio the FCC will triangulate your position and WILL issue a $10,000 fine or you could face prison! Its your choice to take the risk! ...i have literally seen "licensed ham-radio operators" tell people this online, so it MUST be true.. because they have a license!
  25. If you are looking to chat with anonymous men over wide-areas/long-range, then GMRS is not the right choice.. Unless you work for the government, I am not aware of any "government networks" you can use/access (anyone please correct me if i am wrong), so H.A.M. repeater networks/HF, or the Grindr app are probably better choices.
