Because sometimes that's just how radio-waves work.  Not sure what other answer your looking for.

Looks like you answered your own question.

    There are only two possibilities:
You have a setting wrong Its out of range/out of LOS

That is because they don't make GMRS radios - You might find some Motorola GMRS or FRS radios, but those are the cheap/low quality type radios, not the high-quality non-GMRS radios he is referring to.  Basically, just ignore him because he is rheet-hard-ed.

I had one and it worked fine.. but unless it has some feature that you need that the Retevis RT97 does not have, you should consider it also.

Thats why the CORRECT way to write it is:  H.A.M.
Anyone that thinks otherwise obviously does not even have a H.A.M. radio license.

Step(KHz) stands for how much of a Step the radio takes when manually tuning to the next frequency. Ie; .5khz, 25khz, etc.. It does not really apply much to GMRS unless you are using your radio to manually tune-around to find non-GMRS frequencies to listen to.
My guess is you will not need to change it.

I was told by a (former) Midland Marketing person that this is by design - the entire chassis is a heat sink so a fan is not needed, but yes, you feel the heat.
Also, beware that "some people" are going to leave ssstupid comments in this thread declaring that this radio "sucks", "is junk", it's too expensive, it's gimmicky, etc, etc, because it does not have the features that THEY think are important. So bear in mind that Midland did not design this radio for them, they designed it for normal people such as yourself that just need to talk to people while driving. Midland did not design this radio for losers that sit in the basement searching for anonymous men to chat with over the radio to brag about how many buttons or knobs their radio has.

Probably something to do with VHF propagating better/more fars than UHF and because NOAA does not care if you bought the wrong radio. I'm sure some radio-dork will chime in with a 10-paragraph explanation saying the same thing unless i'm totally wrong, in which some radio dork will chime in with a 20-paragraph explanation saying I'm wrong.

I use mine for transmitting on both simplex and to repeaters, but it primarily functions as a repeater antenna, so I cut it for something like 464Mhz - but because of the design of the antenna the SWR is virtually the same on 462 as it is on 467, IIRC its something like 1.03:1 .. The antenna is very forgiving..

Yes it has to be cut, as indicated on the instructions in the box.. Those same instructions also very clearly explain what the frequency cuts are, and which sections to cut, and how to cut them. Its almost as if the instructions answer all of your questions.
SOURCE: I have a 1486 on my roof.. and, i read the instructions ...

I’m guessing the OP ordered it, then shifted into overdrive while waiting for it to arrive. Once he receives it he’ll hopefully notice the directions.
On the other hand if he took it out of the box and shitcanned the box without reading it, he’s going to suffer some serious ribbing. 😁

    Fixed them for you..
That spot is fine as long as your soft-top doesn't tear it off, but heed this warning: "Some people" are going to proclaim that ghost antennas are "no good" and "dont work", or that your location is not "perfect" enough.. These people should be ignored with extreme prejudice.

you "hear a call from our repeater, no problem" - so, the radios are receiving the repeater, but then when someone replies, which is no different from "a call", you dont hear it?
This makes no sense to me as explained - please elaborate, and remove the RX tone and tell us what happens.

Hearing them talk a channel number between 15 and 22?
If so, my guess, based on 1,000 other people asking the exact same question, is that you are hearing people talking on a repeater. They will not hear you until you configure your radio to transmit on the repeater.
If not and you are hearing them on channels 1-14, then either they are using tones/codes so they cant hear you or, they just dont want to talk to you.
    Hope this helps!
