Well I just added a 805G to the radio family for the wife to use on her hikes with the dogs. I bought it because the 905G is so much more bulky, she would just leave it behind, for me however the the 905 just feels so much more rugged so it will be my HT. Reception wise they feel similar but I may be wrong but the 905 sounds a little better to my ear, I also like the knobs more lees chance of them moving.. I think the 805 is great but for me the ()% seems well worth the extra cost, it just like a better radio, very happy with mine

Your observations is so right on...  I have two 805G and the girls love them.... Lite and easy... But my maleness likes the way I can program the 905G to scan the way I what and still talk to the girls...  So we are in the same camp on the use of 805G and 905G..

Welcome, I am new to the GRMS world as well, just installed a KG-1000g in my Jeep and will be using a 905g as the handheld with the Jeep. Mine is 2019 JLUR

Welcome, nice Jeep... now tell me about that KG-1000G mount and what antenna and where did you mount it...  What is all the other stuff you have mounted.  Sorry GMRS folks, it is a Jeep thing.

    Thank you MacJack!
I was having a hard time trying to get the KG-905G programed and then got it figured out. Self teaching is the only way for ol' dogs to learn anything.
BTW, Nice Jeep! The green Jeep is my old 2010 and the gray one is my newest. Both have a blower but the 3.6L is a much better power plant.

I agree but sometimes "old dogs" need help.  No shame in asking, I had to.

I like your Jeep upgrades, I held back as my 12 yo grand daughter will be learning to drive soon and keep it stock to help her out. It is the same thing I did for her mom and aunt in my 20 Jeep.  Hours on hours driving the back roads to no where and getting lost.  Glad I had my gps back then.

  4. I have both... Ham Ticket and GMRS... I like GMRS for more local community connection and help those in GMRS locally.  As for Ham, nice group and full of rules and procedures.  So do both not knowing your area and Hams...   I should say, we have a great Ham Club and repeater and wekliy Tech meeting and bio monthly lunches.  So me 74 yo and my 12 yo grand daughter have our Ham ticket and enjoy this Ham group as they are very social but GMRS is more family connected and not that outreaching.  This is IMHO for western NC...

  5. Congratulation on your license and most of all getting two great radios...   Send me a PM personal message and I will help you answer your questions....  See my 2018 JLR in my ID...  welcome to GMRS and Jeeping.

The lack of repeaters in the Raleigh metro area shocked me, too. I'm down south of Fayetteville in NC and on a good day with the wind at my back can hit one in South Carolina...with my base station, barely. I'm heading up to RDU tomorrow and it would be nice to hit a repeater on my way up, that's for sure (and all the times I drive by with my camper/trailer). Good luck, dang it.

You are going to have to outreach...  repeaters are not going to come to you.... You have to find a family repeater like I have and ask if you can join in...  We have one repeater in our area is open IF you are the right type of person and what you want to do...  I did put up my own repeater for the family/kids and we have so much fun.  Change your focus and think of how you can help the repeater community/family.  An example is the repeater owner who has the best location and the highest tower on the higes mounty covers 30 miles and we became best friends and he helped me get my Ham ticket.  You have to work at it...

Thanks, even though I realize a lot of us buy jeeps to take the top and doors off, I am not a fan of the sun beating down on me, so the top is never coming off on mine, in fact I am getting a 270 awning tomorrow for the lunch stops in the desert.

    Enjoy the open air.

I know what you are saying... I use PF 60 plus all the time... because I Jeep and bike and wear long sleeves and a hat...  I am my dermatologist best customer.  So I do use a sun screen on my Jeep but does not stop crime  Happy for you and how you made your rig look..

Copy that. I'm planning on staying away from channelsstaying. 8-14 for that reason. It will be interesting on how well a hand held works. Its a high wing aircraft so hopefully that will work as its own ground plane sts.

OK then try both FRS and GMRS channels as you HT will auto check you output power.

Ok. I ended up getting the 805G rather than the 905G and all in all it does what I need. The backward compatability with my currently owned Wouxun accessories/battery packs was just too convenient to pass up. Most likely my airborne experiment will happen 15 June in the morning. Trying to avoid summertime turbulence and pop up storms is the goal but 15 June itself is pretty locked in. My plan initially is to make a general call on channel 20 with tone 141.3 just to test comms feasibility through repeaters and then go simplex on channel 20 for a time. My goal is to not be on 20 for too long and move to simplex on channel 7 if all goes well. Obviously flying the aircraft and Comms with ATC take precedence. Just fyi for planning center mass of the AO is Lubbock Texas.

See attached for picking your channel, in short stay with the GMRS channel as our radios do cut power down on FRS channels as tested with my SWR meter.

As a regular user of APRS on Ham band I have to chime in.

The point of limited channels is very valid. Where I live, apparently some people already using GMRS/FRS channel for data telemetry. It's only mildly annoying now, but should everyone start using APRS (or other data) it's going to be detrimental to voice operations.

APRS depends on a network of digipeaters, to be reliable and useful. I do not see it's to happen to GMRS ever in my lifetime.

The new reserved data channel for FRS/GMRS? Yes!!! Where do I sign up. It could be one of the low power 467.xxx MHz channels or it could be a whole new 12KHz channel dedicated by FCC. Fat chance...

I agree that GMRS is a different breed and Ham channels offer a better solutions for those into APRS.  Let's face it "how many folks cares about doing APRS in GMRS" just get a ham radio license, it is not that hard... Me and my 12 yo grand daughter just got our Ham ticket this month.  Loving our local club and social connection to learn from older guys playing with APRS and all the other stuff like connecting with ISS.

  11. That is how I set my 905G as well... NOW I'm thinking of added a https://baofengtech.com/product/amp-u25/ in my Jeep to give it more power instead of purchasing another radio because I use several HT in my Jeep.

Food for thought...  If this works for the way you will be using your Jeep as a base unit.  I would look at a Cross Band Repeater unit so can get more walk around or hiking area using a HT to communicate to your parked Jeep in my case which will reach a repeater from the Jeep mobile unit with better antenna and more power.  Still studying this option.  Have not picked my mobile radio yet or just do a GMRS Amplifier for UHF (400-480MHz), 20-40W Output (2-6W Input), Analog and Digital Modes, Compatible with All Handheld Radios.

Keep in touch... and if anyone has a Cross Band Repeater setup for GMRS let us know...

Finally my 3 905Gs have arrived, feel very solid, even a little chunky, the 3200mAh extra battery is the same size as the standard 2800mAh, thankfully all work fine. Looking forward to using them with the family on our offroad, camping and road trips together.

Hopefully they will be worth the wait.

    Enjoy your 905G great radio.

  13. OK I have been reading all these post... I have a 2018 JLR which is all aluminum BUT I have a steel front bumper to protect my antenna...  It is a Midland MicroMobile MXTA12 Antenna Mag Mount MXTA12 with a Midland MicroMobile MXTA26 6db Gain Whip Antenna MXTA26.

It seems to be working ok but I have not run the cable through the firewall yet as I've been happy with the HT and the high gain antenna.

I should say I'm very happy with the HT in my area and may install in base and/or Jeep at https://baofengtech.com/product-category/amplifier/ and may add 30-50W Output (2-6W Input), Analog and Digital Modes, Amplifier.

This will cut down number of radios I have and I'm more of a HT guy.

Pick what is best for you and feel free to ask me question...

The community benefits from this info. I would certainly take the issue up with the supplier. The issue could be a simple as too long of screws being shipped or it could be the metal inserts in the case are flawed or there is plastic flash in the screw holes.

So true Michael...  A good USA dealer should be able to get manufacture to do the right things.
