Software that is available is downloaded via myview.motorolasolutions.com. Unless you have an account you can't download. Legacy software is not there. The CDM used Professional Series. Its out there with some digging. Unlesss you programmed the pins for PTT it wont work.
Sunny Communications owns used-radios.com. They are a standa up place. I know multiple customers that deal with them on out of support equipment. Many have received parts and if there is an issue they just send another. I got one of our SAR repeaters from them. It was a like new 25 watt VHF which is what I wanted. Looked like it had never been installed when I unboxed it.
Quantar is excellent choice. You can find the 25 watt PA models with no issue but the 100 watt can be turned down with no issues. I reecvently switched all our SAR repeaters out to used Quantars and its night and day audio.
Ya the trip was amazing. Second time we have been out west. Last time it was GC and Moab. Now this weekend its front unit bearings as I broke a bolt in mine last weekend changing UJoints....Ya me...but better in the shop than on the trail.
Just got back from a 6000 mile trip across the US. Some little riding in WY but now packing Jeep for a few JJ rides. Uwarrie next 2 weekends for myself then out to KY next month. Today need to pullallmy gear from the Gladiator to put in the JK.
I run LMR branded pepper shakers on UHF and 800/700 on my work trucks. I normally remove them monthly and even those at times have a small amount of moisture. I use the rubber washer under mine on my personal vehicles and have rarely seen the issue there. On my work truck I swap so much I normally use the ones built in.
The radio is DMR. Your not going ot listen to the San Diego Police or any other public safety on it as they are P25 and the radio is not designed to decode that format. Other than a scanner you will not find a radio to listen in on that stuff.
Youd have more success spening a bit more and buying a real repeater. The RT97 is +/- $350 and already has duplexer and other parts tied in that you will need.
The system @OffRoaderX linked is 4+ hours from Stanton Island. If you look at the map you can see various repeaters in and around NYC but none are linked to my knowledge. Half the time they are filled with beeps, foul language and other voices. To my knowledge there is nothing that will get you to albany. My first option would be to be pick up your cell phone and install Zello if you want PTT access to your friend 3 hours north of you. GMRS is not the fix.
yup. Expecially if its remotely public safety. Over the years we have had hams join our SAR team and want everyone to use ham. They dont get that most members spend tons of time training on all the other tasks they do. The radio is a tool for them. We use public safety frequencies. We have multiple licenses for all over our area for this reason. I wouldn't put any of my SAR operations on GMRS or ham for that matter. I know some of the k9 folks use FRS for training but that the extent of it.
Except you can't use simplex 19 either....
Exception: Licensees who operate North of Line A and East of Line C may not operate on channels 462.650 MHZ, 467.650 MHZ, 462.700 MHZ and 467.700 MHZ unless your previous license authorized such operations.
I use the MXT115 for my parents. I like KISS. It works fine on both the repeater channel and simplex we use. Its sitting on a small ff power supply. Antenna is a DB404 on the roof with 35' LDF4-50A
My parents run the 275 in both there vehicles. Never once have they complained they can't talk to the repeater or talk simplex when they need to. Its all about what your use case is. Personally I use the midlands areound the home on all my tractor/utility vehicles as they are decent and simple. I also run the 275 in both my Jeeps for off road again never needed more. I guess if your trying to talk to a repeater a million miles away you may need more but being most folks use a handheld to talk on my repeaters the extra power doesn't do anything.
Our SAR team and most in the state all use Garmin. I use it for work as well now and quite a few coworkers have gotten them. The mini is awesome unit for just send a message. For more emessaging I prefer the Inreach and it pairs with my Overland GPS in my truck so I have a 10" tablet to send messages with.
As said its all about use case. I've only used 1-7 to talk to folks with FRS radios as its low power and is really local to me.I have my repeaters narrowband as family has midland mobiles that only did narrowband. I do have a second bank with wideband if needed but not sure the last time I used it. 99% of my comms are to a jeep in front or behind me or a trail guide 50' away.
