  1. Break out the smartphones and aprs cables!
  2. Those designations include data too if I understand it correctly
  3. Darn it, Murs is allowed AM. Talk about security thru obscurity
  4. Are there any AM Murs radios on the market?
  5. I use the lrs 12-150
  6. Will transmitting using tv coax hurt my radio or my fars?
  7. Gmrs MOXON is fairly easy too. Use any of the online calculators to get the measurements
  8. I think the 12v refers to the input voltage. I made my own as some of these eliminators don’t provide enough current for transmitting. Check my post history, I think it’s in there somewhere.
  9. Kmr400 isn’t too bad either
  10. What part of Texas are you traveling to?
  11. When we go on road trips, I’ll check our route against the repeaters mapped on this websites map tool. I’ll enter these in to my radio’s channel memory by local name/repeater name. Usually in order of our departure point to arrival point. Most of the time I’ll put in access permission requests on MYGMRS. Unless you are in a caravan or convoy, I would not expect to hear other simplex users. I used the DB20G, it has plenty of memory for most trips, if you want to save some cash the RT95/AT778uv is good too. RA87 looks interesting if you want more power.
  12. Think that about covers the digital GMRS rules
  13. 95.1731 Section (d) Digital data. GMRS hand-held portable units may transmit digital data containing location information, or requesting location information from one or more other GMRS or FRS units, or containing a brief text message to another specific GMRS or FRS unit. § 95.1773 Section (c) Digital data transmissions. Digital data transmissions are limited to the 462 MHz main channels and interstitial channels in the 462 MHz and 467 MHz bands. 95.1787 GMRS additional requirements. Each hand-held portable unit transmitter type submitted for certification under this subpart is subject to the rules in this section. (a) Digital data transmissions. GMRS hand-held portable units that have the capability to transmit digital data must be designed to meet the following requirements. (1) Digital data transmissions may contain location information, or requesting location information from one or more other GMRS or FRS units, or containing a brief text message to another specific GMRS or FRS unit. Digital data transmissions may be initiated by a manual action of the operator or on an automatic or periodic basis, and a GMRS unit receiving an interrogation request may automatically respond with its location. (2) Digital data transmissions must not exceed one second in duration. (3) Digital data transmissions must not be sent more frequently than one digital data transmission within a thirty-second period, except that a GMRS unit may automatically respond to more than one interrogation request received within a thirty-second period. (4) The antenna must be a non-removable integral part of the GMRS unit. (5) GMRS units must not be capable of transmitting digital data on the 467 MHz main channels.
  14. The best infractions are intentional infractions?
  15. Smiley antenna has some great options https://www.smileyantenna.com/product-p/46540.htm https://www.smileyantenna.com/SearchResults.asp?Search=465&Submit=
  16. If you use an APRS cable ( Btech or other) you get much better signal transfer. Brief text and location data transfer are allowed on simplex. Check out andFLmsg works well too, more modes, forms etc. Works better too.
  17. It was approved by the FCC for data transmissions. The data mode isn’t voice so that scrambling doesn’t apply. https://www.radioworld.com/news-and-business/examining-the-gotenna-communications-device
  18. This is the way. Apparently encryption and digital are allowed on Murs. The Gotenna uses encrypted digital modes on those frequencies. But all that is very low power and limited range.
  19. Each radio has its own RF signature due to inconsistency in manufacturing and assembly of components. Has something to do with how quickly and cleanly a radio comes up to selected frequency. Interesting and DEEP in the weeds. Apparently you can use a sdr dongle and some plugins to explore this concept. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_fingerprinting https://www.winlab.rutgers.edu/~gruteser/papers/brik_paradis.pdf https://www.rtl-sdr.com/using-an-rtl-sdr-rf-fingerprinting-and-deep-learning-to-authenticate-rf-devices/
  20. I’ve heard rumors of certain firmware plugs for the ham version and fully unlocked radios if you order straight from Wouxon, but cannot confirm any of it.
  21. Set duplex to off and vfo tx to off
  22. you need more amps
  23. This is the best use of linking i can think of
  24. I found that, he only needs a few feet. If possible, he’d like to do a bulkhead mount between the mic extender and the hand mic so everything will be hidden away. I haven’t found any that do not require soldering.
  25. Kenwood 8 pin cable extender? Any makes to stay away from?
