  1. Thank you, I might have missed that and I'm at my quota for returning items for this month ? I didn't see any 771G's on Amazon, so checking around I found the Nagoya 771G at buytwowayradios (good company?) for $18 or the Nagoya 771 Gain ( I did notice the difference) for $8 at wallyworld (I don't know much, but I'm not sure I trust it, I read something about "counterfeit" brands, plus shipping takes two weeks). Just thought that was an interesting contrast and I will not be buying the 771 Gain. I'm still on the fence though...why do I like the RD 332, well it's the same brand as my radio. It boost VHF/UHF 136-174/400-470MHz Dual Band , is that significant, I have no idea, but it sounds like I'd be able to scan those emergency channels, once I get the HT programmed and all the other cool stuff I'm missing out on right now. ? Oh, still haven't gotten my antenna off yet and haven't received confirmation what type of connector the GM30 base has (male or female), but the first company has either option to choose from so I may not need any additional adaptor(s). ?
  2. Would you mind verifying the type of connection (male/female) on the GM30-G radio? Trying to decide which one of these to get.. 1) Nagoya NA-771 SMA-Male 15.6-Inch Whip VHF/UHF (144/430Mhz) Antenna or 2) Radioddity RD-332 14.96in SMA-Male High Gain Antenna for VHF/UHF 136-174/400-470MHz Dual Band Handheld Radio
  3. Thank you for that, good to know it does come off. attached is a picture of what I see and will my old eyes it's really hard to tell. Regardless, I don't have an all that small, so will have to go somewhere tomorrow and see if they can do it for me. Probably, buy a small allen set while I'm at it ?
  4. Anyone out there had any luck removing the antenna on the GM30-G? I want to replace it with a more powerful one (going big ? ) but can't find much info on how-to-do it. I saw on a radio reference forum someone did it, saying to remove the set screw, and I see the little hole in the base of the antenna, but not set screw.
  5. The FTDI cable will be here tomorrow so I can update and program it. Thanks for the headsup.
  6. Sorry if there's a thread for this topic already, didn't see it. Entered in emergency frequencies for my area (LASO, LAPD, FIRE) to listen on my Radioddity GM-30 (HT) but I haven't heard a peep. Tried switching it into synch mode, RX hopping (won't turn on), and even entering in the tones listed for some of the channels posted on radio reference dot com (some just say CSQ [whatever that is?]). I am just using the HT right now, and have crappy reception in my area (Canyon Country). Even my weather channel reception is spotty at best. Any input, suggestions, links to other threads, or advise would be appreciated.
  7. Hello and welcome, Lifegood. I'm new here and to GMRS, as well, so I though I'd chime in. Everyone I've met and shared with has been very helpful, so I'd say you're in the right spot. As I said I'm new so my knowledge, all things GMRS, is limited. I currently have a mag mount sitting on my hood, ran the wire around the inside of the engine compartment to stretch it out and into the firewall. I'm not sure I needed to stretch it out like that, but back when I installed my cb, I was instructed to not coil my cable, figured it was the same concept.
  8. I'll give it try, thank you for the tip. What does dual band mean? Is this the one you have....
  9. So the other question is will I need to buy another antenna for the radioddity db20-g or can I still use the midland mxta25 ghost that I just got?
  10. Thanks for your input. I read you loud and clear. ?
  11. Thank you OffRoaderX. Besides talking to folks on the trail, how would in perform with repeater use?
  12. Great, thank you MichaelLAX. I know what I'll be asking Santa for this year(PowerSupply)! I thought Randy said the MXT275 had just eliminated channels 8-14 because it can't transmitted on (gonna go back and rewatch in a little while), however it is still a narrowband radio (confirmed on Midland website). What are the main disadvantages of narrowband and are there any advantages at all? In other words, considering I'm just learning and limited in my GMRS arsenal, would the MXT275 be worth holding on to, in your opinion?
  13. Ha, great videos. Thank you. I do have mixed feelings and many more questions. For the MXT275, he stated that, no- does not have the ability to have multiple channels with repeaters on the same frequency but with different tones, if I understood Randy correctly (approx. 12.16 video time). He did mention it did have split tone capacity. What does that mean? He mentioned it was narrow band only, but not sure if that can be changed in the settings. When he did the first radio check with the friend 10 miles away, he didn't elaborate what channel he was using, simplex or repeater. However he did go to a repeater channel to hit the one 60 miles away. The DB-20G sounded pretty good too, with the additional ability to have multiple channels with repeaters on the same frequency but with different tones. Randy stated the MXT275 would be good for entry-level users (me) and the DB-20G would be for more advanced (dorks ? not my words)users. So now I'm wondering if I just have both and use one as a home base unit, how would I set it up on power? Chances are I can be one of those dorks by the end of the year! ?
  14. Did a little poking around (mini research) and wasn't able to find a definitive answer to this question, so I emailed Midland and awaiting the answer.
  15. Copy, thanks. I'll look into it. Off topic...I noticed some of y'all have your location below your profile pix, how do I display mine?
  16. Thank you for your input. I think I'm hearing that it shouldn't be an issue with having them joined like that (overheating, interference), correct?
  17. Hey y'all, Any ideas or recommendations for dual radio mounts? I have a Andy 2 cb unit and will be getting the midland mxt275 GMRS unit today and would like to have them both accessible, yet consolidated. On the mxt275 all the controls are on the microphone including a speaker, so technically I could hide the base unit under the seat, but the base also has a speaker, which I like, so I kinda like to keep it out where I can hear it (my hearing isn't what it use to be ?) . I'm posting a picture of a system, I found on line, as a general concept of what I'm looking to do. I'm just wondering if somewhere they actually make a bracket for dual radio setup. The thing I don't like about the setup in the picture, is it seems the two unit are joined together (maybe with 3m tape) and I'd be concerned about overheating issues, if that is a thing. I feel like I'm trying building some sort of cockpit in my truck ? This is WROA675, thank you in advance and y'all stay well.
  18. Thanks for your input, I like the way think. Great news about Oak mtn.
  19. Hey MichaelLAX, first thanks for the assistances earlier...you be hearing from me soon! Secondly, what is the process for "getting permission"? Do we have to track someone down, write a letter, make a call? How would one go up on a repeater? Lastly, I think I read joining a club would be helpful, true? Any in the San Fernando/ Santa Clarita area that you know of? Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread, hope no one is offended.
  20. I think I enter it correctly. I'm on DIY-1 (031) but not hearing anything. Maybe I could drive out near you?

  22. I'm off the 14, close to Via Princessa (Sierra hwy & Soledad)
  23. Thank you MichaelLAX. Honestly, I haven't changed any settings, programmed any channels, and really I wouldn't know how to do it anyway, at this time. I have read through the manual for the radio, but I'm unsure how to make sense of it. I'm optimistic that with time and instruction, I'll get it. I was able to talk to my daughter on her FMR walkie, which was nice because at least I know the unit works ? . I saw the video you suggested and thanks for all the other resources. That guy, Randy, is as funny as he is informative, I've enjoyed watching a few others of his reviews. I'm over the hill for you in the Santa Clarita Valley, so hopeful in the not-so-distant future we can have a different kind of conversation (over the airwave versus the net).
  24. Hello to you all, I recently received my call sign, WROA675, and yes the fee is still $70, though I keep reading it's suppose to go down to $35. My exposure to GMRS is through 4x4 friends that don't have CBs, but suggested getting GMRS units. That being said, I'm walking into this new world blindly. Right now I have the Radioddity GM-30 (handheld), nice unit as far as I can tell, for my needs. I will be getting a mobile unit soon for my truck. I have heard people (right out of the box) on the lower channels talking and assume they may be on FMR (walkie talkies) and some chatter on the upper channels. I've attempted to speak to those on the radio (get a radio check) but no one on any channel has responded yet. I assume any one on the radio is willing to chat or why would they have a radio. I'm thinking since mine is a handheld unit maybe they can't hear me, but not sure...is there some type of tuning, etc, that I need to do to my radio to transmit and receive messages back (and what's up with the Morse code)? Any tutorial videos y'all would suggest for a newbie like me? Clubs to join (I'm in Cali-L.A. county)? Thank you in advance for your advice and input. WROA675 signing out ?
