  1. If you were local I'd say go see Ed at Wifi Expert in Valencia. Still, I would recommend you call him at 661.200.0771 or email, sales@wifiexpert.us and check out the website coaxrf.com. I got my LMR 400 coax from him, plus a pigtail for my swr meter. He has a small shop and was able to make what I needed while I waited. Very affordable (lower than other advertised products I've seen). If you call him, tell him the guy on the Harley sent you ?
  2. How would I tell if it is a newly manufactured one or not? This one is advertised as 2AJGM-UV5R
  3. Looking at purchasing the extended pack of BaoFeng UV-5R radio with 2pcs 1800 mAh Batteries + BaoFeng Programming Cable + TD-771 High Gain Antenna + Radio Mic on Amazon for $45. I've been hearing that this is the radio to have... I believe this radio would be nice to add to my already growing surplus, as one that will be useful once I get my HAM ticket. Getting it now would give me time to become familiar with it's functions even though I won't be allowed to use it, yet. Please, someone talk me out of this, if you can...(feeling like I'm turning into a radiohead ?!!!)
  4. I'm really leaning towards getting this one, I sent Bob a email to see if he has one. My gmrs-mind justifies this swap by saying I can still use the Larsen as a backup for my mobile (camping, or otherwise in those far off, hard to reach spots) ? My rational-mind, however, needs to double check my hoa regs to unsure I'm not going to run into any friction. The Larsen blends in well and inconspicuous (I didn't ask or check with hoa), but the Comet is sure to draw some attention. ?
  5. Awesome thanks for the info. Even with a few added feet the changeover point would still be outside, however, it seems that the configuration would still be preferable. ? I could tape up the changeover point really good (probably better than I could at the connection point at the antenna) and have the N connecter run straight into the Comet. What do you think?
  6. Thanks for the tip. Both ends of my coax are PL 259 male connector and the GP-6NC has a N-female. So would the adapter I need be a PL259 female to N-male?
  7. Right!?! The whole reason I got into this is because I heard that the chicks dig a guy with a radio clipped to his belt, plus I wasn't getting anywhere in Tinder ?
  8. Considering this for my next antenna (geesh, just got the Larsen's set-up ?) as it seems it would be a easy swap and give me better coverage. Quick question...It's already tuned for GMRS correct (no trimming necessary)?
  9. Thanks everyone for the input and advice ?. In the days ahead I will put the swr meter back on and experiment some more with the different channels and range. I agree with the consensus, at this time it all seems adequate with the potential for some tiny adjustments. Tomorrow I'm gonna go back into the rafters (oh joy?) just to make sure the cable didn't get coiled, plus secure everything from point a to b. One other piece of advice I picked up was the actual location of that bracket and how moving it to the peak of the roof?️ which may give me another 8 feet, in height, clearing the roof for better quality tx/rx ?(not sure that would affect my swr at all but it may cut down on the background noise). Again, I appreciate all the assistance and thank you all for taking the time and making the effort in helping me get squared away. ?
  10. Monday improvements and update: Rod cut to 8-7/16, on 462.650 (my nearest repeater)at 1.67 swr for high power, 1.22 for low power. Manufacturers specs say 460 cut to 8-3/4 and 465 cut to 8-1/4, so I imagine that's about the best I can do. Should I just leave it be or take it down a tiny bit more?
  11. Current settings: rod length 8-3/4, 462.612 mhz @ 1.0 swr,...467.650 @ 2.44 mhz (my closest repeater). Gonna stop here for now (getting dark) until I get some more input on how to proceed
  12. Get 'er done...almost there. Everything is in place, initial test successful hit the repeater and making contact. My transmission was readable but noisy. Maybe it was that I was going through the swr meter, which btw was at 2.66. down from 5.89 uncut. I did leave it a tiny bit longer than the suggest cut in the chart, to have something to go by (baseline). Other things I noticed was the knurl section of the antenna end and the smooth inside of the cable (see pictures)...is that going to be an issue? Everything else seems okay but I'm sure I'm missing something. I'm gonna cut the antenna down to specs now and see what changes it gives me. Not gonna to start securing thing too much until a acceptable swr is reached.
  13. It arrived today, yay! However, it'll have to wait til later for installation, as I has a tone of daddy-do's to get done. ? Beyond, being able to tx/rx with the nearest repeater, will I still be able to pickup emergency and other channels, utilizing the full potential of the DB25G, I usually scan (outside the 450-470) with my new Larsen's?
  14. It's on the way, yay!!! Question, I forgot about the programming cable, Can I use the K-type I have for my GM30 or do I need to order one just for the KG 935-G?
  15. Thanks Earl. I'm anticipating good things. I used my DB20G and the Bingfu mag mount (on a metal skillet) a few weeks ago and was able to hit the nearest repeater and talk to the folks over the hill (no the clearest transmission, but it worked), so this has gotta beat that, by far. ??
  16. Considering I'm mounting it to that metal bracket (formerly the Dish bracket), I shouldn't need to worry about anything else (more metal) as far as grounding it, right?
  17. First off, Happy Friday and I hope all is well with y'all out there. Getting so close...radio (DB25G) arrived, coax (LMR400) arrived, the SWR(Surecom sw102s)meter and antenna (Larsen BSA450) should be here today. Any tips on putting that antenna together? The coax was a bit more "hardy" than I imagined it would be. I'm wondering, though, if there's anything I should know about running the cable? It seems there's a couple of tight turns and I don't want to stress out or break the cable, in any way that's going to affect its performance. One other small detail I overlooked, and that's a "jumper cable (I think that's what it's called) between radio and the SWR meter. Does that need to be the same gauge? What's a ideal length (how short do I go)? Is it okay to leave the meter permanently attached to my set up or just remove it once I'm sure of a good swr?
  18. FCC website will have a list of all the licensed GMRS users in your area. That may be a good way to find other radioheads in your area.
  19. http://www.wallylamb.net/ Also, note worthy, the cult classic; Blazing Saddles: starring Cleavon Little, Slim Pickens, and Gene Wilder, directed by Mel Brooks.
  20. Welcome Ben, I'm new too and will say that it sounds like you're off to a good start. Be careful though, you might end up with two or three more radios before the end of the year. Just take your time and make sure to have fun. Most people here are very helpful, even if it doesn't sound that way, sometimes (hope you have a good sense of humor). Plus, there are plenty of threads you can start reading to get yourself orientated to the world of GMRS. Getting on the radio and talking with others is going to depend on your location. You can find the repeater(s) near you (see Repeaters up above), plug in the tone (if they have one) and start yappin away. You might even find someone local that is willing to meet up and show you the ropes a little. What is your region?
  21. Hey now, this probably won't be too exciting for a lot of you, but I thought it was share-worthy, especially for us Noobies. Plus, I need to get more points towards my next badge..."badges, badges, we don't need no stinking badges"(gratuitous movie line). ? So after watching a couple GMRS radio videos, I saw a some of things on expanding the range for HTs. The one thing that caught my eye was the Rat Tail, so I tried it on my Radioddity GM30. As some of of you know, I live in a canyon with very limited reception, so any addition mods are helpful. ? I cut a nine inch piece of wire and first I connected it to the metal beltclip bracket, not sure if that made a difference. Next I unscrew the antenna (NA-771G) halfway, wrapped the wire around the post and screwed the antenna back down...then waited. It wasn't too much longer that I noticed it was picking up chatter. Some clearer than others, but definitely better reception than before. ? Then came the the golden nugget. I tried my nearest repeater and was able to hear the wild (sometime heated) conversations, last night (those here that were listening too know what I mean ?️). I doubled checked via text with my GMRS mentor that I was actually hearing the repeater and not so random local traffic, and yep, confirmed and successful ground trailing wire experiment. Unfortunately, with the low power of the GM30 (5watt) I wasn't able to transmit to the repeater from my home. But hey, it was a free upgrade and win, in my book, knowing I can expand my range of reception if need be...WROA675 clear. ?
  22. Thanks Earl. I don't know who Michael, the site owner is, but yeah hopefully everything's okay. So here's what I finally went with for the homebase, and they should be here in a couple days: Larsen BSA 450 antenna - 30ft of LMR400 coax - Surecom SW102 - Radioddity DB25G I'm gonna get up there and remove the Dish, today or tomorrow,, and leave the bracket to mount the new antenna. then run the cable down into my office (not looking forward to crawling around in the rafters). Hopefully all goes smoothly and WROA675 will be up and running from home by weeks end.
  23. Very interesting recent thread (debate)on that subject, a real page turner ?, sorry for even bringing that up... Welcome aboard! I'm pretty new, too, and I can say you're in the right place to increase your knowledge and skill level. People here have been so helpful, some even going out of their way to tutor us Noobies.
  24. I see those too, plus some DMR...so with my GM30 HT or DB20-G which modes might I be able to listen to, and will I be able to hear the higher and lower frequencies (e.g., 483.53750, 123.9750, 968.00000)? What does type mean (RN, BM,M)?
  25. Yes, it's back up...I'm on it now
