  1. That is not the intended use of the aviation emergency frequency.
  2. If you are considering only GMRS, any cheap GMRS radio should be able to scan the 22 available channels well enough for you to decide whether or not to purchase a license in order to use the transmitter function.
  3. Several years ago, near Indio, CA, I replied to a distress call heard on one of the GMRS Channels. The youngish sounding man who replied reported that he had been in a Jeep accident up in the mountains, but had a suspiciously strong signal from a presumably hand held radio. He could not provide ANY useful details, not even his name. Nevertheless I reported the call, and what little information I had, to the local 9-1-1 Telephone Operator.
  4. So true that many people never change the radio from the channel (#1) that it came ‘out of the box’ with.
  5. RE use of Channel 9 for active Search and Rescue, I would note that Colorado and Wyoming have recently published plans to use Channel 3 for such purposes…
  6. Well, that’s where the GMRS radios come from anyway.
  7. I would expect strict U.S. export controls on anything electronic that is to be sent to Iran…
  8. Also removing the microphone might be a good idea (I expect many thieves might not even recognize what is left as being a radio).

    Very new to radio

The much maligned “Cheap Chinese Radios” are hopefully affordable enough to be purchased in pairs for the relevant radio service (GMRS or ‘ham’).
  10. If you can also form the coax into what is called a “condensation loop” (such that it enters the door jam in an upwards direction) it will help keep rainwater out of the vehicle.
  11. So, if you are calling for help, be sure to keep talking long enough for Channel 19 to come up on the ‘Scan Hit Parade’.
  12. What material can I place under a magnetic antenna mount to limit damage to vehicle paint while maintaining a strong enough magnetic force to prevent antenna movement?
  13. It’s more about convenience than money. This old 5 watt radio still does exactly what I need it to do (short range convoy coordination), powers directly from a cigarette lighter socket, and, to cap it off, because my installation involved use of double sided mounting tape, removal for a replacement radio would be a pain! In summary, I just want to replace the microphone (whose connector cable failed) and keep on ‘as is’.
  14. I need a microphone for my ancient Midland MXT100 MicroMobile GMRS Radio. Original is Part Number (P/N) MA100 with P/N MA105 listed as a replacement, both of which are out of stock. Can anyone suggest a source or suitable substitution for this microphone?
  15. I understand that, in British Columbia (Canada), the logging road radio protocol is very regimented.
