    What kind of radio are you programming?  Were you able to first download a copy of everything currently in the radio and save it to your system? I would recommend you then save another copy with the word WORK in it so you know it isn't the original that you might need should you accidentally brick your radio.  The rest of this is my "opinion" and may be contradictory to what you hear/read but if you give it a try it probably will get you on that repeater. <Wink>
    After editing you should be able to first save your "WORK" then upload it to the Radio...  In your case you probably will wind up with a line that reads something like this at one of your locations:
    Loc # = Self explanatory
    Frequency = 462.625000
    Name = (Something like) RPT625
    Tone Mode = Tone
    Tone = the value of the PL code he/she gave you to transmit into the repeater (if you click on the space a nice drop down menu will pop up)
    Duplex = +
    Offset = 5.000000
    Mode = FM (then again it might be WFM depending on what specific radio you are programming - don't use NFM)
    Power = High (generally - but up to you).
    All the rest should probably be blank just to get it working....
    OK, there is my two cents, for what its worth.  Hope this helps get you going.  I sure wish you luck and want to say Welcome to GMRS!

    OBTW, in my experience, there is no reason to set up my radio with a receive tone, you will hear what is being said anyway and its just another step that can get fouled up.  If you had two repeaters fairly close by, and you only want to hear what is said on one of them - I guess you could use the receiver "trick", but to be honest - seeing that situation generally is pretty rare.  JMHO.
    A final thought - some of the Chinese radios that have been getting FCC approval for GMRS have a problem if you try to edit more lines for GMRS use than the 8 they have pre-programmed.  I have a BTECH GMRS 50X1 that is like that.  If that is the case you will be forced to edit the line that already contains the repeater frequency you want to use and just set the Tone properly to get in.  Again, good luck with this!

    My Son and I have mentioned it via private message.  I believe it would be highly desirable to let multiple users on MyGMRS.com to use the same GMRS Call Sign - since immediate family members are authorized by the FCC to do so for anyone with a proper GMRS license.  My son is now registered here on his own license, but when you think about it, none of my adult grandchildren.  When you consider it, why unnecessarily restrict by Call Sign???

    I dont usually like to post videos here, but I have been so inspired by several of the "experts" in this forum complaining that we should not be using radios made in China that I put together a list of all the American Made radios AND I vow to purchase each one of these American made radios and do a full review of them in the next 30 days..  Thank you to "some people" that opened my eyes about not purchasing radios that are not made in America.

    As pointed out already USB is only 5 VDC. You can get a DC to DC converter however there is a second problem. Most USB adapters/plugs can only supply 1 amp max. A 5 watt radio will likely draw up to 2 amps at the battery terminals on transmit. The total power drain on the low voltage side of the DC to DC converter will be higher due to the lower input voltage, power in = power out + converter losses, which will exceed the rating for the USB outlet.

    The "stale repeater" function needs a little updating. Repeater owners will not update their repeaters even if they are online. One year seems fair for a repeater to go "stale". However there should be a button or toggle to let other users, who can hit the repeater, let mygmrs know the repeater is in fact still online. A good example is WRAL242 repeater in Troy, Tx. That repeater is online and I use it almost daily, but the owner has not updated it in a while. It does not show unless you toggle "Show stale repeaters". It would be convenient for people like me who know the repeater is online, to simply hit a button that says something along the lines of "this repeater is not stale" or "this repeater is online". Then it could be on the main map without having to sort through stale repeaters that may be offline. It may also get used more.

    I'm sorry, but anyone who couldn't pick out the proper programming for a repeater (high/low vs. low/high) doesn't appear to be qualified to tune a duplexer.  I'd also be curious how they managed to tune it to the "wrong" frequencies if you just flipped the high & low sides.

    Yes - along with some amateur repeaters that also run reverse split - but not in GMRS, and still certainly worth questioning the information given when someone tells you that their repeater is going to Transmit on the 467.xxx, and Receive on the 462.xxx
    That's more than an "I screwed up".  That's closer to "I didn't have a clue."

    I was in the same boat and i was also going the KG1000. Thank God they were out of stock when i decided to purchase and in the meantime i started looking at alternatives.
    This was conclusion.
    2 KG1000 roughly close to $800
    Antenna and feed line $300
    Power supply $120 after i got to this point $1200 i decided to look in another direction.
    Retevis RT97 $500 plus antenna and feed line again close to $1K and the retevis is nice , self contained and portable but the power is laughable for the price. Everything has it's place and this RT97 is good as a portable repeater but not for a home environment.
    Looked in eBay and found a used Vertex Standard VXR 7000 price range from  $395 to $600 mostly without duplexer. Chinese duplexer about $150 tuned and delivered so this was looking like the best option with a good proven and reliable repeater. I found by chance a VXR 7000 with the duplexer for about $500 and i pulled the plug and got it.Antenna was $206 with tax of amazon and 75' of cable was another $100. I got 2 top rail poles from home depot and installed the antenna at 20' high and at that range i am getting close to 20 miles from it. I also bought a tower so the antenna will be soon at 60' and that should give me more coverage.
    I might have spent close to the price of doing the KG1000 repeater but i have a true repeater that is doing exactly what it was designed to do instead of putting parts together. I will not tell you what to do but from my experience you will spend less money buying a repeater than making one out of radios unless you already have the radios on hand then you will be saving some money if not then i think my route will be cheaper and more reliable.

    The KG-1000G setup will have more output but a "real" repeater like the VXR7000 with only half the power, has much better (almost 2X) range - probably because the internal shielding which reduces desense, and the better/high-quality duplexer.. you COULD spend the extra money on a KG1000 setup for a better quality duplexer, but that gets costly.
    The Retevis outputs far less power than either setup, but gets about the same range as the KG1000 setup..   Roughly 30-40 miles to a mobile radio, even further to a base-radio.

    Hi Dave, an thanks for the nice words.  My real problem is the lack of people GMRS, in my area. Putting that antenna on top of my truck could work if there any users in my area. So far I’ve not found any even after putting the Nagora 772G antenna on my handheld.  Now that said I’m not giving up for finding folks.
    I might try the ham route if I knew that there ham folks in my area. With the cost of ham equipment I’m afraid of trying an finding no one.   I hate wining but I’ll keep plugging along.
    Thanks again for your nice words an welcome to our site. Where are you from?  I’m from New Jersey.

    I agree with off-roader but I live in a dead zone an talking to anyone has been difficult to say the least. It’s all that he said an more. I put the Nagora 771G antenna on it an the static is cleaner ?.   It’s a great starter radio. You always buy a more expensive radio down the road. Good luck.

    The UV9G was my "go to" HT that I used when off-roading for a long time. It's cheap, waterproof, fairly tough, and did the job (talking to other Jeeps nearby) just fine.
