Missing CTCSS codes on some older radios?
WRUU653 replied to TrikeRadio's question in Technical Discussion
I can’t believe I’ve never tried this before. It may not be that uncommon as I was able to do this with Wouxun UV9PX, KG-Q10H, KG-S88G and Baofeng UV-9G. Nice to know indeed. edit: add the KG-935Plus to the list -
Missing CTCSS codes on some older radios?
WRUU653 replied to TrikeRadio's question in Technical Discussion
I have some old Motorola FRS bubble pack talkabouts and I am fairly certain they are missing these too. This makes it fun for putting in PL tones by number, better to know the Hz. Motorola Tones .pdf -
Repeater network in Wyoming and Montana
WRUU653 replied to PBRStreetGang's topic in National and Regional GMRS Nets
No worries at all. It’s not you. He has an opinion on the subject of linking and his rabid devotion to the topic is now bleeding onto threads where it doesn’t belong. -
It sounds like you want to use the repeater but on separate tones than regular traffic which can be done by putting in a second set of tones on the repeater. Of course it would need to be your repeater.

An eight year old girl armed with a soccer ball will knock that radio right out of your hand! No comms, no comms for you.

New to the GMRS world. Looking for solid training

Our own @marcspaz has a really informative video here. You’ll find that Chirp now has software for the Retevis RA87 . NotaRubicon aka @OffRoaderX has a video on programming here. -
Welcome to the forum @Horsesrear

I might add it has been said testing SWR of an HT antenna with a surecom is at best problematic. I have not bothered. I’ll let others chime in about how good the testing is. I’m one of those guys that’s happy if it works.

On a Baofeng I find both 701 and 771 to be an improvement over the stock antennas. I use the 701's unless I need more and the 771 is an improvement over that. I like the smaller size and I'm not usally struggling to get more. That said I don't use my Baofeng's much now and I find the stock antennas on my other radios are pretty good. I did recently pick up a NA-320A tri band for my KG-Q10H and so far so good.

Reception on GMRS is line of sight. Check out this tool, it may help you with expectations. Trees, buildings, even moisture can impact your signal.

I started answering unknown calls with "this call may be recorded for quality assurance". They always hang up after that.

@GeauxGreddy greatest presentation of a question ever For what it's worth I like em wide...

John did you notice @SteveShannon mentioned that Bakersfield recently had an outage?

As previously mentioned there is no official national channel/frequency for GMRS emergencies. Some areas have repeaters set up on GMRS for locals in case of flooding, fires and other things that may be common concerns in their particular areas. I have seen some like the one at Oroville that have time restrictions and split tones so residents can monitor through the night in case of a dam flood. Check with your local ARES group to see if they have adopted anything where you are. Our Emergency Communications Council has adopted 462.675 as “Emergency communications and traveler assistance in the General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS).”

I’m near the coast where it seems to be constant so I had not considered this. Thanks @back4more70and @SteveShannon.

If you are using software always save a copy before you start making changes so you can go back if needed. I’m tapping out for the night. It’s been a long one. Let us know if you succeed and think about joining the forum. Good luck

I don’t know. The fact that you picked it up once indicates you should be able to get there again. Assuming you are at the same location probably not the antenna. Any chance you changed the frequencies that were programmed by accident or put a tone on them? Probably not the station itself being down as you can get it on your HT. Assuming you’re receiving other signals I would verify frequencies for NOAA are correct as @WRXP381 suggested.
-
No you’re correct. Have you tried just tuning to the stations rather than using scanning. If the station isn’t strong I wonder if your squelch setting isn’t running right by it.
-
How’s the ground plane? Is it possible the vehicle is blocking reception from how it’s sitting. I’m just throwing darts here
-
I think I have seen radios come programmed with the NOAA stations in a different order. So potentially not having the same numbers from one radio to another. Just a thought but have you tried all the NOAA channels?
-
Yeah I hear you but I gotta figure something is making the Ht work better and the location of a NOAA station and you receiving it definitely can be affected by the antenna. I can pick up two stations where I am with a good dual antenna but only one that isn’t. Also if he can program an HT he probably can program his mobile.
-
I believe that antenna is uhf only. Your Ht likely has a dual band antenna.

Ahh yes, I had one of those kits as a kid… Great story! I have a clear picture of what that would have looked like with my dad.
