  1. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, saying they think a roger beep is annoying equates to violating rights is a bit of a stretch. beep edit. In my opinion.
  2. I’m going to pretty much echo what everyone else is saying. The KG-935 plus is a good solid radio and it’s my go to radio for GMRS. I have dropped mine few times as well and it survives. USB charging is nice. It has ability and room to program lots more to listen and scan. The only short coming I can think of is that it’s not waterproof but I have other radios if that’s what I need and most times I don’t. I have no problem recommending this radio and no regrets purchasing mine.
  3. @WRZB774 lots of us here have both a GMRS and amateur license. They both have their purposes and you may find one or both fit your needs. One thing to consider is who you want to communicate with and if they have the same interest as you in being licensed for whatever radio service you are using. You mentioned family and GMRS is ideal for this because they can use your license to communicate with you. It looks like you have a few repeaters around you that you may be able to reach. This can greatly improve the distance you can communicate. Some are open, some are members only. You may want to see if you can reach some of your local repeaters and if your family members can reach them from their locations. As for which radio, well that is a whole different thing but I personally started inexpensive while I got my feet wet and found what I liked and wanted in a radio. Then I started getting more radios. Then I got my amateur license and got even more radios. Beware It can be habit forming. Good luck and welcome to Mygmrs.
  4. We’ve all had typos and that’s a common one so much so I didn’t even notice. As for starting with a Baofeng, I think it’s smart to start inexpensive and they work. Great way to get to know what you may or may not want if you decide to indulge in future purchases. Nothing wrong with that.
  5. I fear it may already be too late to save yourself, nothing to do but say welcome! One of us, one of us…
  6. Both good radios.
  7. Just a friendly heads up. When asking questions about repeaters don’t post specific info on the repeater unless you are in the private (members only) area of the forum. So maybe just don’t include the name of the repeater or leave out specific tones. Here’s the what and why per forum rules located here. Private content. Do not post sensitive information such as repeater PL/DPL (also known as privacy or CTCSS/DCS tones) tones outside of the Private Discussion forum. This is to protect sensitive information from being picked up and indexed by search engines such as Google and Bing. The N indicates Normal while an I would be for Inverted. As you mentioned there is a +5 for Tx. It is worth noting that the +5 is automatically added on the preset repeater channels of GMRS radios and won’t require you to add it. You may know this already so I mean no disrespect by mentioning it, just trying to help. It sounds like you are on the right path.
  8. Nice. I didn’t realize that was an option.
  9. I considered this one when I was choosing a mobile but I needed a detachable face due to space constraints. The 778UV is still on my list of potential base station radios. It looks to be a good bang for your buck radio.
  10. As it has been said it really depends on how you define best. I truly like the KG-935 plus. However I recommend a fully immersive approach to the radio illness and keep buying radios one after the next. You’ll be in good company.
  11. This will be valuable information for the door to door GMRS radio salesman I’m sure.

    gmrs licence

I received an email when I got mine. Seems like the sort of thing that might be worth checking your spam filter/junk mail for though.
  13. I agree it’s a great radio and it’s what I have in my truck.
  14. Since your radio is GMRS specific on TX I would go with an antenna tuned for GMRS. While I like the comet antenna and I own both I would recommend the Midland MXTA26 for GMRS.
  15. I got it from the same place @Sshannon linked for you.
  16. The KG-1000 plus looks like it will get those AM frequencies as well.
  17. It looks like their shipping estimate is six days from now. The KG-1000 plus is a good radio and if you’re sold on it I would get on the wait list. It will go by fast. I’m not sure about the radios you are comparing it to but the 1000 is a super het and liked by many. Just my opinion.
  18. Posting before caffeine is not advised… wait what am I doing? Never mind I got to go get my first coffee. ️
  19. Sounds like a great trip. My wife and I have taken similar trips out that way. Found the guardian lions of the desert just by chance out on Route 66 Near Amboy, west of Needles.
  20. @WRTZ750 I understand the initial question was about keeping tones private. My question is have you already assessed that it needs to be where you are? What I mean is larger city areas seem to be locations that have more of the bad element however where I am the repeaters don’t really get used that much. Most are open and the owners are glad that people make use of them when they do. Even some that require request seem to use common travel tones and I think they just want to know who’s using them. Of course your mileage may vary depending on location and people.
  21. This ^^^
  22. You’re not wrong in saying so and this thread is barely if at all clearing the trees from the Mygmrs rules number 7 found here. Also no offense intended.
  23. Just to be clear I’m not saying it’s a crap radio. Rather that @WSAK691 doesn’t give rats ass about his initial question as he had already decided it was crap and only came here to argue.
