Private/Restricted Use Listed Repeaters

Something I have never understood and curious if anyone else has wondered the same... We have people who come to MYGMRS.COM and register their private/restricted use GMRS repeaters on this 'public' website and I don't understand that if the repeaters are private or restricted why they advertise their repeater(s) on this website. My thoughts would be that if they don't want people using their repeater(s), then why go through the trouble of advertising it on a 'public' website, I would think that would be the last thing they want to do is draw curiosity... Keep in mind that I am not talking about those that charge money to use their repeater to financially support it such as the GMRS repeater network group in Georgia, I am just referring to general private/restricted repeaters. I would think if they don't want people using or knowing about it, then don't list it for all to see... Just seems to me like a bunch of extra repeaters listed in the directory that cannot be used and a waste of resources. In MY opinion I would prefer to see only repeaters that I can use listed, but again, thats MY opinion.

Private/Restricted listings at the main website require OWNER PERMISSION - usually in writing - to use their system. This procedure allows the OWNER to screen applicants to determine if they have an active GMRS license and what their intentions are. If someone sees a  "Permission Required" entry in the main Repeater Listings at MyGMRS, the frequencies are usually listed, but the access codes are not.  There is a click button below the location map for each entry that says "Request Access".  By clicking on that button, a request form pops up and info in that form is sent to the owner.  It is the responsibility of each repeater owner to UPDATE any changes in their repeater listings at MyGMRS. That's also why there is a "Report Listing" button below the location map that persons may use to report any system data that is no longer applicable.  The owner of MyGMRS (Rich) usually sends an email to OWNERS that have systems reported, to determine current status. If they do not respond in a reasonable amount of time, the listing may be removed from the listing area until some form of verification is received back by reply email OR the owner updates or removes the listing themselves.

Private Members-Only systems are sometimes listed to A) try to attract new members or B ) advertise the repeater exists to help with frequency coordination. If someone checks this site to see what frequencies may be open, they'll see the listing even if it's a private system.

I would offer that any current and accurate listing is useful, regardless of the type of system. If it's private, then other GMRS users in the area should respect that and not interfere.

to add to what Rich and PG have said, I have several machines that I list as private and require permission. I have some locals and I get requests for people coming here as tourists. for the most part I have no issues but when I do the machines get shut down and that helps no one. 

then you have groups like BTG and  Blue Com that are private paid by members who have their own vetting processes. again the main thing is to know who,what freq and where the machines are, it's all about coordination.

This is the perfect venue for all of us to make sure we don't interfere with each other and also to determine if a new repeater is actually needed. I know of people who put up a repeater and then discover that one already exists.  We have recently encountered a new repeater in our area on the exact  frequency and PL code as a long time existing Red Cross and REACT repeater. Fortunately nobody seems to be using the new repeater right now but if it gets busy we are going to have big problems. I use the "Seven Corners" repeater to talk to my son on the last five miles of his trip to work in DC since the "Warrenton repeater" usually fails at about that point. Now however I can't do that because I'm too close to the unlisted repeater on the same frequency and PL!

Another example, I listed mine and a repeater owner contacted me the next day letting me know I'm on the same pair and tone as him, so I changed tone and if it gets bad I'll change frequency.

 

Had his repeater been listed I wouldn't have had to go through all of that, so it is very helpful as far as frequency coordination goes.
